Do you believe that a person's pain & suffering, illness & loss may be a gift of enlightenment,...
should they choose to recognise it?
Yes, in fact in my life it has always led me to more enlightenment. I will be turning 60 in a couple months, and my journey on enlightenment started very young. I had taken the road of hard knocks and turned it around to help others facing similiar circumstances.
I do not believe in should, so I cannot respond. If they choose to recognize it, than I will tell them, they do not walk alone. There is always someone beside you walking that part of the path. This is what helps when we are going through difficult times.
Blessings,

depending on one's view of the world around him, including his own, but it's all based on mere consciousness rather than vice versa
I think this is a view people develop, as a means of coming-to-terms with the difficulties they have in life. Life is hard at times, and in order to be able to cope with the bad things life throws at us, we try to convince ourselves that these expereinces are lessons that we have to learn on the road to enlightenment. However, I suspect, if we could choose, we would rather not have these experiences in the first place. Certainly, I would rather have an easy time in this life, instead of the endless problems, which are supposed to make me a stronger person.
Somehow. I believe that like gold we need to be purified in order for us to be a pure gold. We need to pass to the refiner's fire, eh. It's just the same with our own personality. In order for us to learn, there are times that pain, suffering ,loss and illness are the great teachers.
If your feet hurt enough you may actually take the time to find out why.
your kidding right? if you believe that i have beach front property for sale in alaska.
yes, I believe so. Usually pain and suffering makes one realize of the super powers around us since we seek their help and guidance. Those who are suffering should think of it as a boon to be near the almighty and consider themselves blessed!
It is hard to believe the above but, it sure is a blessing in disguise.
I plan on using my pain and suffering, illness and loss to help others. This will enrich my life. It's a gift of enlightenment, only if and when we choose to see it that way.
There is a blessing in every curse and a curse in every blessing. The "we'll see" story in the movie Charlie Wilson's War demonstrates how this can be true.
I once heard a Tibetan monk asked why he did not hate China for destroying his country and he said, "If China had not done what they did, then Tibetan Buddhism would never have been shared with the world"
It all comes down to perspective.
From a person with normal sight's perspective, a blind person is pitiful and one will feel bad for the blind person.
But from a blind person's point of view, he is content with what he/she has and won't feel sorry for him/herself.
Human Suffering ... as the means of enlightenment, is Buddhas Idea of salvation ... the Soul, thus achieving the Gift of Nirvana ... Meaning, being exonerated from the Cycle of birth and rebirth ...
Who Exonerates the Soul, is not the topic of Buddhism ...
In Islam, we Believe, Man Brings about suffering, loss and pain, with the doings of his own hand ... here, or ... in the Hereafter,
One doesn't need to experience pain, suffering, illness or loss to be enlightened. The more pain or suffering one experiences doesn't lead them to be more spiritual, to learn more, to be more whole... We have opportunities every day to do this, unfortunately for many people, the only time they take a deeper look into their lives is when things are going wrong.
That is to say that if one IS experiencing these things, there is always opportunity to learn and grow from it.... but there is always that opportunity anyway, whether you experience these negative situations or not.

What is the true purpose of religion/spirituality? To bind us with rules, or to open our hearts and our minds?Where does atheism fit into the above? Does tolerance go hand in hand with enlightenment, and if so, how do we promote enlightenment (in whatever form it takes) over dogmatic...

Do you think our life here on earth is predetermined by us before we are even born? Some think we plot out a chart before we arrive here giving ourselves 6 exit points during our lifetime. If we do not take any of the exit points (near death experiences) when we get to the last one, our time...
