   Is anybody else irritated that when answering a question, you get told the answer is too short?
   
   I have tried answering a few questions, and while I am not just writing yes or no, I apparently don't have enough words. I had a 6 word answer and they wouldn't accept it. Do you think that forces a better answer... or going against someone being able to just give the answer they want!

   Sometimes a question only requires a short answer. I have noticed short answers posted to some questions but when I write a short answer it is rejected. Perhaps new rules are now in place and the short answers, I have seen, were posted before the new rules came into force. I do find it annoying that my "answer", which is my response to a question and therefore exactly the right length....short or long that I have chosen, is deemed "too short" by someone else.

   Yes...I am.  I think that a person should be allowed to choose the length their answer.  if it only requires two or three words...so be it! However, some questions require lengthy explanations.  This would mean more words.  I hate it, when a company that has to shut down operations for so-called "system-updates (see 'our stupid techs screwed up')" tell *me* how to write. According to my reading, about half of them can't even use the English language properly! They only got their jobs because they're cheap labor!

   I agree.  Sometimes the best answer is short and sweet.  I usually put my 3 or 4 wards followed by a lot of these.........................to fill in

   Yes! The rest of this answer is BS. It is only here as a means to convince HubPages that this is relevant to the question. A lot like those essay questions in school where you just wrote words to fill the space. I think this is enough. Thanks for listening and have a GREAT day!

    I have to say yes. Ran into this the other day when, literally, all I wanted to answer was yes. Couldn't do it, so then I had to think of more BS words just to fill space. From now on I'll just do this .......... Didn't think of that. Awesome!

    If you are required to explain then probably you must give your best shot and if it could be only answer by some short answers like yes/ no then why you have to give a longer one?

    Short answers are good. Otherwise, you have to filter through garbage and filler-yuk!  No one should dictate the lenght, it's your answer.

    I think they want these to by more essay-style answers...  Just possibly.  o.o;  I usually look at it and wonder... "Did I write too much?  I wonder if they'll actually read this..."  because I end up writing a paragraph or two on the questions I answer.  ^^;

    i think it illistrates how a site can claim to be "the" place for creative writers, then imediately construct a set of rules that restrict creativity,.... perhaps they think were all in training to run for political office, in which case any answer that uses the maximum amt of wods while giving no real answer gets the prize,... creative vaguery.
    
    "too promotional" "sub standard",... what are these labels and who defines them?
    
    hemmingway woulda got his adds jerked here, so would stienbeck, so would sinclair lewis,... but then again, non of them will be remembered for writing self help pages about how tro loose 10 lbs in 10 days while removing the stains from your best shirt and winning your clingy demanding girlfriend back....
    
    but they will all be remembered,... unlike the authors of those litterary wonders.

    I sure do; sometimes you can convey something adequately in just a few words just as well as you can in a paragraph more.  And sometimes being required to give a long answer just means you have to find ways of saying the same thing over again, or at least to find different ways of phrasing it, or at least expressing it slightly different.

    I agree. I have had that as well and had to add words that didn't add anything at all to the quality or sense of my reply. But it's not just a case of me feeling a short answer is best, many people who post questions only want a short reply back. So is it annoying - yes!

    Yes. One way to counter is that first you write an answer according to the rules set, but edit to make it shorter in the 10 min edit period. It works.
    One of the other member (Manna in the Wild) also used this 'trick' in this answer.

    I think it's all a conspiracy by the AMA to make us type more and in turn more people get Carpal Tunnel Syndrom and Tendonitis. It's all a scam and we should revolt.
    I'm just kidding, I'm usually pretty long winded anyhow. Maybe they should put limits on how long the answers are instead.

    What is usually does it write the person question then i give my short answer to avoid that pop up. however question can be answer with the yes/no response.

    The nature of someone asking a questions means that they are lacking knowledge in the area, and you the 'expert' have that knowledge.  It's easy to forget how little someone might know about something.  It's hard to force yourself to be so descriptive but sometimes it's necessary to go the extra mile to answer the question properly.
