In the broadest terms possible, I believe that the absolute worst problem mankind faces is intolerance. In all of history, there have been numerous wars fought for the sake of what is purported to be the right and just. This means millions and millions of lives lost based on an opinion.
Ozone - Green house effect.
Seems like not many countries are taking seriously about the problem as it will eventually affecting future generations.
This is going to be a Huge problem if we do not take the important steps to reduce the effect.
We are losing the capacity for love. Humankind has sacrificed this to become the dominant species, and we must now learn to adapt to our environment rather than adapting the environment for us. The routine separation of mothers and babies at birth is what has enabled us to become so pugnacious and destructive, and we must reverse this by giving birth back to women. Comparatively few women across the globe give birth thanks to the natural uninterrupted flow of love hormones, and unless this is reversed now, women will lose this ability completely within only a few generations. Conception, birth and infant feeding will be and is now achieved without the love hormones being present. A scary thought, because we are imprinted at birth with impressions about what it means to be an incarnated soul, and we continue through life carrying these impressions and forming our attitudes to life from this early stand point.
I have a very strong opinion about this and actually wrote a hub about it. http://livhappy.hubpages.com/hub/MONEY-is-power
Apathy! We are so busy thinking "me", we forget that life on this planet is "we" and our lack of concern and indifference is glaringly apparent by the lack of balance between the haves and have not's.
The world's news media have, over the past century or so, depicted the world as getting a worse place to live as far as human behavious is concerned. And it certainly seemed that way on the surface of things, bigger and worse types of warfare, e.g. mustard gas, bacterial warfare and the like. The only reason earlier generations didn't use these things to injure and kill one another was they hadn't then been invented.
Personally, I think the world is slowly changing for the good. Slavery is largely abolished. It was commonplace in the Ancient World. Millions died from the ravages of various plagues, most of which have been eliminated or are held in check by modern medicines.
No, the biggest problem in the world today is that the world has a finite surface area and humankind is still breeding like rabbits. Thomas Malthus worked in out mathematically centuries back: the world will become too crowded to support the human population. That has already started to happen- hence the worldwide polution of air,sea and land. Hence global warming. Hence the hole in the world's protective ozone layer, the decimation of forests and the destruction and dying out of many species of animals.
We human beings are the world's biggest problem. There are too many of us!
The world's greatest problem today? Not easy... there are a few to choose from!
I think apathy and renouncement of responsibility are the biggest problems to tackle in this day and age. It is an attitudinal problem. The resources, technologies and manpower to solve all the other problems are already there. People just need to reconnect with each other, take responsibility not just for themselves, but for their fellow man and the future generations of our species and get involved.
I've decided it is time for me to step up to the plate. I am making changes in my life, and I am looking for ways to involve myself in positive social change. I refuse to live my life like I'm an observer on the outside of this world. I'm in it and it's gonna have to sit up and pay attention, cos I refuse to leave it in the same state or worse as the one I came into it in.
Failure to communicate. We all would be much better off if we could simply sit down together and talk through our differences.
This would have to be self. Every crime and evil committed all boils down to self. And trusting in leaders who do not have the best in mind for their citizens.
The shortage of time, everything else you can buy, produce, invent or reinvent or create in laboratory....but no one returns you the lost time....
If I were to ask the biggest problem of the world is Global Warming. Pollution is the most sensitive issues to talk about because most country are encountering this kind of problem.
Differences in generations, views, medias, ozone, wars, crime rates, bullying, markets, housing, taxes, businesses and the cause and effect the economy placed upon people. The list could go on and on .....the differences in attitudes that are perceived in various situations takes a big toll in which individuals express their beliefs and opinions. I'm not saying it's right for someone to go on a killing spree or inflict pain upon another human being to express themselves. I'm simply stating that people in their right minds have their own individual thinking process on how the view things is all.
Unfortunately us humans win that golden prize & silver, bronze, copper etc
global slow down in business..which leads to higher unemployment..
I'd have to agree with some of the others; apathy and selfishness. But I think the underlying issue is that many people don't feel that they can effect change. They take the "I'm just one person, what can I do?" stance and let themselves off the hook.
I also agree that apathy and lack of love/caring is the fundamental problem. All positivity flows from a position of caring and/or love. So, be it the environment or media, financial woes or war, these problems all stem from the lack of love evident among people. Even here, on HP, I see in the forums people lashing out at each other, in a place that is supposed to a community united by the common bond of the love of writing. Just because different sides do not agree on topics does not mean there need be a lack of love and caring in the person defending their own position. There is a toxic effect from those who would choose apathy or hate in espousing what they believe to be "right" over love for their fellow man.
The world seems to have many great problems, however I think parents lack of time to be with their children must be tops. I belief children benefit more from spending time with their parents rather than parents being too busy looking for wealth and in the process not getting to know their children well. The children are left in care of adults who are paid, so there is no real emotional connection as thats not what they are paid for. In the early years, if possible, one of the parents should be availabe for the children, or if not close relatives like children's grandparents or aunts/uncles. Children are the future, if there is no emotional connection, likewise they will be cold to their children and their eniroment. Probably thats why there are many problems in the world today as people are cold to their enviroment and just don't care. Can we blame anybody? Probably we should initiate the move to change the world to a better place to live in. We should stop being selfish and start thinking about others. Doing small good deeds to one another not because we benefit, but because its good to do so.
I'd say (as a couple other hubbers have said) psychologically, humans are out of their element to some degree. The government has banned us from doling out consequences to people/children who deserve them, therefore, if there are no consequences, why should someone change?
Also, IMHO, the world started changing for the worse, when both parents went out to work full-time. Natural parents are barely raising their children anymore. Their kids are raised by daycare workers and schools. Back in the day when mom stayed home (and i'm all for dads being home as long as one of them is there part-time) and kids could be disciplined, life was simpler, happier, easier. Nobody cared if they had the best car on the block, they cared if they had well-behaved/respectful children, a decent home, and husbands/wives were a team. There was time for communication in fact families who didn't have satellite tv, cable, cellphones, ipads, were left to communicate with each other and not ignore life. Nowdays it's too easy to ignore life and go on with our routines, and not disciplining our kids, giving them everything they want because we feel guilty that we're not there. Therefore we're raising snotty, entitled children that have no idea how to respect others or to work for what they want because they've never been forced to do these things with good reason behind them. This country is built on government and money, nobody cares about family and love anymore it's all about money and who can make the most and who has a bigger house and a badder vehicle. These energies should be spent with children, teaching them. nurturing them, loving them, showing them. We're all guilty to some extent because we've allowed our country to run our home life. But as someone else said here, it starts from within. I was a stay at home mom for 15 years and my husband wasn't rich whatsoever, we made it work. Anyone can!! You have to go without your daily latte and 1000 satellite channels but so what? Is that more important than raising intelligent, selfless, happy, giving, compassionate children?
I agree and disagree. I agree a parent being f/t at home raises a better child. I disagree about not having both parents work. I worked (I'm a single mom) but I also stayed home f/t - because I ran my business from home. Best of both worlds for us.
I'm pretty sure I mentioned the one parent working part time, but if not I apologize. There's nothing wrong with one full time and one part-time or working at home but two f/t is too much:)
Morals or the lack there of. There used to be a time when people new the diffrence between right and wrong, but it seems now that the line between them is faded. People also seem to have forgotten how to be respectful to others, which was once ingrained into all of us at an early age. Without simple tools like morals, manners, and respect we will continue to fade as a society.
They used to allow teaching from the bible and prayer in school also. The bible tells us what is right and what is wrong, but we are all free to choose what we will believe, read or listen to....and ultimately follow....slow fade.
Relationships and human interactions have really changed.
To start with I would have to say that this is an interesting subject. Thanks for that!
A lot of choices really, but I would have to say POVERTY. Imagine if all people are rich, perhaps no CORRUPTION (what for? to get richer?), no FAMINE (obviously), no IGNORANCE (yes and this is related to education of course), no CRIME (what about for vengeance? A man with 'proper' education makes him think outside the box and to act professionally), no 'poor' EDUCATION (that would mean great minds will come into being and so a lot of technology will be invented) and many more problems will be prevented if POVERTY is solved.
I hope that helps!
