Since the removal of the comment system from Hubpages, writers have seen how hard they readers can project feedbacks on articles and interact with one ajmather. Now, that it's being test run on AxleAddick and three other sites, too much confusion is generated. They, hubpages said it's being test run. But it's the readers that will suffer the most. The old comment system that works best can be refine and advance to meet maven standard. Your thoughts?
Yes you are right. Sometimes my fingers are itching to release some response to one of the articles published, but then no way to do it.
As i don´t participate actively on hubpages, my only contributions are comments. So i have no right to complain, but it is a change in response and discussion culture.
I have the impression that some article authors have moved to short and less well researched discussion starters to get conversations going. Articles now have the character of one way personal statements.
Initially i thought i had my browser or hubpage access configured wrong.
CHRISS57, I'm likewise in the same boat with you this year. I realised I've not write any article this year. I'm on a years' break. That said, commenting on a writer's article get me into a sort of detour. But it's now made more difficult by projecting it on AxleAddict. Seriously, those writers making out what I call 'buttomless abstract' of an author's article for discussion in the forum, are geting no near the author's thoughts. It's just a compliment.
I fully agree with you; losing the comments section is like losing one of your five major senses, sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell.
Authur, in that case, one become very confused. Especially, the visiting readers. I pity them. Not how they comment and interact with writers. But find out that articles seems to be clothed with ads, videos, suggested articles for...so the visitor just goes away to another...you know where, right? It is said and agreed that commenting has no profit for a business outfit. But does not some business ventures welcome suggestions from clients or customers? I think that improves sales and brings in addional outlays.
Arthur, here we have the situation developing live:
You just published a very interesting article about your Solar energy system in your house. I would like to comment and discuss - but how??
At the top of author's profiles is a 'contact' link which allows you to contact the person by email.
Certainly I would like to hear your comments on my solar energy and wall battery article, and discuss by email.
CHRISS57, if I were you, I would respond here right in this forum. I'll tell Authur that I've read his article and highlighten the unique points worthy of note. I've done this more than once. Seriously, that's what I did (and still doing) when HubPages withdraw comments from the feeds.
As requested, I have now set it up as a forum, for anyone interested in joining in the discussion between Chris and I.
Thanks, Arthur, thanks. I'll go for it soon.
You cannot set up your own forum.
Soneone else must post it for you...rules from Hubpages for now.
I know, that's why I didn't link my HubPages article to it; just raised the topic as a topical subject to debate e.g. the benefits and costs of solar energy.
Hey..I'll post it for you.
None of need to get Hubpages upset.
It will be in the forum undrr community news.
I've read it. I'll go for it again. Cheap energy at less than 30 pence per kilo watt hour? It's a deal indeed. I envy such country as Britain.
Cheap energy Nope.
The average combined (electricity and gas) cost for a year is around £1,300 per household. The UK state pension is around £8,000 per year per person.
https://www.theguardian.com/business/20 … gas-prices
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-593 … gn=KARANGA
And it's cold!
Yep, that's why I was so eager to get solar panels and a wall battery, which we finally had installed just a couple of weeks ago. And in spite of the lack of sun at the moment (winter) it's already cut our electricity bill by about 50%. Albeit a lot of those savings are currently coming from the Octopus Energy Go tariff which is only 5p per kWh between the hours of 12:30am and 4:30am which allows us to recharge our wall battery while electricity is cheap, and we now also putting our washing machine and dishwasher on timer so that they also come on when the electricity is cheap.
Yep, as you said, it is cold.
How much did you pay for your solar panel installation? Or rather, how long will it take to recoup costs?
I'm thinking of getting a gas Rayburn and full new CH system and sod the expense
What happened to E7? We used to have a commercial meter in a previous house. We had cheap electricity from 12am Saturday to 7am Monday.
Good questions:-
The whole system, including a 5.2 kW wall battery cost us around £10,000 (obviously if you just opted for solar panels it would be a lot cheaper). For me, my best estimate calculations at the moment is that it should pay for itself within 10 years, but I’ll have a better idea next summer when I can see what saving are made from the solar panels. At the moment the main savings is coming from the wall battery.
I’ve just checked on Wikipedia and the Octopus Energy website on the subject and Economy 7 still exists; but these days a 2nd generation smart meter would seem to be the way forward; especially with Utility Companies like Octopus Energy who offer tariffs that provides cheap overnight rates e.g. the Octopus Go tariff provides electricity at just 5p per kWh from 12:30am to 4:30am every morning.
Our old Combi-gas boiler died earlier this year, so we replaced it with the latest eco-friendly Vaillant Combi gas boiler for our central heating. We paid extra for the top range eco-friendly model, but already, since we’ve turned the central heating on (in October) our new boiler has cut our gas bill by about half of what it used to be in the winter months, and still keeping the house just as warm. So our new boiler is a lot more efficient than our old 12 year old gas boiler.
We're with Octopus, having previously been with Avro. It's a shambles (not Octo's fault). Haven't had an updated statement since Sept.
Our CH boiler is 50 years old (Baxi), inefficient as anything but has never broken down. Time for a change soon though. Going look at a condensing Rayburn to do the lot.
We've probably gone off-topic enough now, but thanks for the info.
Good article, by the way.
Thanks Bev, I'm surprised to hear of your problems with Octopus; we get regular updates from them, and the statements have been on time; and I'm able to access the live data from them when I log into my account.
That's good going with your old Baxi being over 50 years old; and good luck with your new system, when you get it installed - most certainly it should be a lot efficient than your old Baxi system.
It's Avro's fault. Even though we have provided them with readings, they seem unable to give a final bill. We are almost £300 in credit with them and it should have been transferred to Octopus ages ago.
Yep, I understand. When I switched from Bristol Energy to Octopus Energy (which only took 17 days to complete), Bristol Energy owed me £533.33 which they paid back via ‘snail mail’ (post), a cheque arrived in the post last week, which I now have to take to the bank to cash. It would have been a lot easier and quicker if they had transferred it electronically.
Bev, my apologies for the late response. Yes, traditional energy source-coal, electricity, gas(petrol), and domestic or cooking gas, are still expensive. I don't know if certain Arab countries still give free energy or subsidy such. Anyway, alternative to the above mention sources or green energy specific solar, is what Arthur had in mind. Yes, and fyi, CHRISS57, Arthur, and me have discuss them in great detail in another part of the forum. Seriously, I'm doing market research to get solar instal on my house just for consumption. In Nigeria, you can't re-sale excess to the National Grid. But the streets are powered with solar from 6.00pm to 6.00am.
I agree with you Miebakagh, Losing the comment section doesn't sit quite well with me. I am someone who loves reading and interacting with people online. It makes me unsure of my work being enjoyed by someone as I am still a new writer. CHRIS57 what you said is so relatable, my fingers itch to comment on an article I enjoyed reading.
Ishika, I can understand your mindset. We sure hope the comment system will be given a deserving structure. You were new to HubPages? My pleasure meeting you. Have you visit the Learning Center yet? There, you can help yourself with all the fundamental basics of writing skill Hubpages wants you to success on it's website's.
Miebakagh, Ishika has been here six months and has 45 articles
Bev, sure. But that's unknown to me. I just returned from visiting her Scrible, (I'll scrible a poem later)Nothing, and Piece of Bread. Of the 45 poems she pened down, more than 35 are LetterPile. What a LP nut she's. And before she wrote 100, she'll be top on the list for Feature Author or Editor.
I agree. To a writer/blogger, that feedback and interaction is valuable.
It is surprising to me how many writers seem to be here only for the dopamine hits of social interaction.
The comment system is what it is, and HP is doing their best to fix it, but they have more important jobs as well.
While they work, maybe it is a good time to focus on things like:
* Learning on-page SEO
* Revisiting best practices for online writing in 2021
* Getting articles accepted to niche sites
* Updating older articles that are already on niche sites
There is away plenty to do around here.
All that I agree. I've updated most of my articles titles, and in the process begin updateing the hubs. Today, I'm online hours ago doing SEO research to be apply on one of my story before submiting same to a niche. Seriously, if it were accept,(and it should be) if fulfiling the editors requirements. But will the present experimental comment system help my readers in this health related topic I'm bent on subming to YouMeMindBody niche site? The Dopamine effect on this forum or writers community can bind like-minds together.
I have done all of that, yet we still have no answers some two years without the ability to receive comments and interact with our readers and peers.
Contacting a person via email is a pain.
It takes so much more time out of my day, when I need to be focusing on other writing projects.
It should be simple and all in one place...so I csn leave a comment after reading one's work.
No hassles...Hubpages is taking away more hours from my day.
I love this community and it's not dopamine from social media...
It's called being respectful.
Acknowledging one's work & contributing one's feelings.
A true writer understands...
Others, i suppose, are money grabbers who don't really respect words.
I understand your frustration, but your last paragraph isn't fair, at least for me. I love writing and appreciate the comments that I receive on my prose and poetry very much. I also need to earn money from my articles. It's possible to write for all three reasons.
I update my older articles (as Eric suggests) for two reasons. The primary reason is the hope of earning more money, but the other one is to try to create a better article for my own satisfaction. That's why I update articles whether or not they are on niche sites.
You are right...it wasn't fair.
We all want & need to make money.
I wish Hubpages would make it easier for us all to do that one.
I merely meant that there are some people whose only concern is money.
They don't want or feel the need to connect with anyone about their work.
Brenda, no, on the money. Some here only register to read articles, and follow commenting and discussion. Some are here for 10 years and have not write a single article. So, some actually comes here to earn. But not all.
I understand what you've said and agree with your comment, Brenda. Some people's goal in writing is solely to make money.
Exactly. I'm glad you agree.
As for my writing, if it brings me any money I welcome it...but that is by no way the reason I write.
True that.
I, too, came on this platform because it has genuine readers who reads poetry, which I love creating.
Those pesky words. I like to beat them into submission and make them earn me lots of money
The comment feature seems to have improved…only have to sign in and confirm email and use a code initially, but not after that. If you wait a few seconds after clicking the “comment” button the window will appear without having to scroll looking for it. Still no notifications but hopefully that will come. Thanks HubPages.
So how does that work for a casual reader? Who could be bothered with all that nonsense? Especially as, when most close their browsers, the cookies are cleared so they have to go through the process the next time they visit.
I've no problem typing in an email address but confirming and codes?... Nah.
And it's all pretty pointless if we don't get notified of comments anyway.
Yeppie. Alot of work & time for nothing.
But whose gonna tap the comment 4 or 5 times to get a box to pop up and then do an email.
Then leave this site while you gather the code andcthen come back to enter it.
We might do this...but my reader's...Nah.
Some are not phone savy.
My patient visiting AxleAddict was reward with a 'nonsense'. So I try WanderWisdom. Same thing. Anyway, hope they's a universal improvement.
Still not working for me...i can see john has 7 comments, but it gives me no box.
I can tap on Facebook or Pinterest & those work.
Arthur, i did use the mail service provided by hubpages. But that brings a lot of obstacles with it. The comment i submitted is simply lost to me. So if you answer in a month or so, i may not even remember in detail of what i wrote. You better do a copy-paste and store your own writing somewhere, otherwise the comment via hubpages mailservice disappears in a black hole. Alternative: Do all to in private.
I found it always very interesting to see what others have to say on the subject of an article. Well, i hope matters improve.
I've just this minute replied to your email, and it includes a copy of your original message to me; so that you can cross-reference.
Not as good as sharing with others on line but I hope you find my reply productive!
Well, here, were on an open system. And you guys are communicating sub rora? Unless, its an issue that does not corner any question here, you're good to go. Or just give us a hint.
Then the comments system will not help us.
Yes, Brenda. It may not at the moment. But when it get much better, it will help.

Hi everyone! We’re pleased to share an exciting update about comments—we know this is an important feature for many of you. We will only be rolling out our new commenting system on AxleAddict for now, but we will keep you posted on when commenting will extend to our other Network Sites. Here are a...

Since this feature was deleted, HP staff have told us that this would be reinstated. It does not matter to all of us, but I know that in my case the readers find it very helpful. A former staff member told me last year that this would become a reality in June of 2021. That did not happen. If it is...

What happened to comments capsule on hubs.
by Debra Roberts 2 years ago
Will readers ever be able to post comments on our articles ever again? This is so frustrating!
by Lisa Jane 2 years ago
How do you comment on someone's article? I have tried to comment on a few articles but couldn't find the place to do it.
by Writen4u 2 years ago
Hi,Is there a reason why comment capsules are unavailable? I can't seem to add a comment capsule to an article, yet in the layout it shows a comment capsule (pictures attached). If I sign out and pull up the article the comment section is not there.Thanks.
