I think there's enough "Alien's" to go around for everyone.  At the other end of the spectrum, I like E.T. too.

I'm not sure if this constitutes as an Alien movie, but Solaris stands out as an intense and haunting bit of science fiction.  There is no overt physical extraterrestrial contact, but the hallucinations experienced by the human explorers implies the presence of an unidentifiable alien force.  The same can be said of 2001: A Space Odyssey, perhaps the greatest science fiction film ever made.

That's a bit difficult for me as I've seen so many alien movies in my time that were good in their unique way, so its hard for me to answer that.  However, I can tell you the best alien film this year was definitely "district 9" that film literally questioned the nature of humanity, and it made the aliens seem more human than us.  Which makes it sadder because as I watch that film, I can't help but realize how true that is about us.

I agree with you on this one as far as the technology concept, the story concept and the no nonsense robot but not for making the alien so human-like. They did a great job for the budget at the time.

The Predator is my favorite though.

    dohn121posted 14 years ago

There's so many that I enjoyed and several of them were already mentioned, so I'll go with some of the less-traveled ones:

Starship Troopers:  I really like Paul Verhoeven and this is one of his masterpieces.  The storyline itself should be reason enough to enjoy this film.

Contact: Although some will complain that it's a bit slow-moving, I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone, especially to fans of Carl Sagan.

Fire in the Sky: Based on a true story, this was  a sleeper of a movie upon release.  Many skeptics think it a fairy tale, but so what?

Communion: Who doesn't like Christopher Walken as a dark character?  This book scared the Hershey's Kisses out of me.

Good of you to bring up this very true fact about the movie industry.   Some of the old stuff really earns the genius tag for costume, ridiculous special effects, and script.    I recall clips of one old monster movie featuring a wooly ape-looking creature wearing a big clumsy Diver Dan helmet on its head.
I laughed so hard I thought my stomach would split.

for the first hour or so, yes...but once they get rid of Michael Bien's character the movie loses ALL of it's tension and becomes an exercise in tedium...
though it does use CGI really welly
