John, I could relate to this poem so well.  Your words truly “reach in”, are vivid, and personally meaningful to many of us.  Beautifully done.  I am pleased that you are still “here” with us at HP as part of what remains of our creative writing community.  You will always be one of my favorite writers.

I found John's poem to be written from his heart and speaks to every poet - or writer, for that matter. I'm so glad John has found the motivation to come back to HP. I've not yet found it. Kudos to you, John! You will forever remain my favorite poet. I've missed you!

      Thanks for sharing this, Genna.

Thank you for your kind words, Shauna. I am glad you were able to relate to my words. Motivation is a funny thing, and it often feeds off other circumstances. But whatever the reason, I felt it necessary to start writing here again. I have missed you too.

Thank you so much for sharing this poem, Genna. Although I haven’t been writing here, HubPages has always retained a place in my heart, because it is where I got my start writing online.
I felt it was about time I started writing here again, even if it is just for the love of writing, and as a way to stay connected to friends, like you, who are still here.

    Hi John,
It’s so good to see you publishing at HP, after a long time.
Your words echo the thoughts of many of us writers.
A writer will continue to write, ‘no matter what—-‘.
I have been privileged to read your beautiful writings since such a long time and I don’t want to be deprived of that.
Glad to have found you on Medium too.
Thank you for sharing this relatable poem.
Thank you Genna, for sharing John’s work in the forum.

      Hello Chitrangada,
Thank you for your kind words. Yes, it has been too long between pieces from me here. I hope I can be more active from now on. It was good to connect with you at Medium as well. So glad that you could relate.

Hi, John. Your poem is touching. Your lines echo the experiences of freelancers.
Ten years ago, while doing freelance writing, I was in the same position. I stumble upon thoughts and words while writing. You described their job perfectly.

Good to see you publish here after a long gap.

I enjoyed your wonderful poem, John. You certainly captured the dilemma of the writer which I think we can all relate to some extent. Do we follow our hearts or do we write to please our publisher or who we have been hired by? It seems that we can be compromised in our writing style and sometimes even in the subject matter if we feel a topic is too controversial and it may curtail are creativity. It’s always good to read your writing at hubpages! Thank you, Genna, for sharing John’s poem.

Thank you so much, Lora. Yes, writing for clients can be a tricky matter because sometimes we may be asked to do something controversial or against our beliefs, and weigh up whether we can afford to say "no." For instance I often get requests from students to write their assignments on poetry etc. and always decline.

    Hey John...
A great poem to write for your comeback.
A writer seems to have things written in several notebooks... I know I do.
I've been lurking in the background,  updating a few pieces.
Perhaps I will post a new piece soon.
