It's pretty clear that the Bible contains descriptions of an angry an  spiteful God. It's also pretty clear that it contains descriptions of moral purity and decency. Someone said that everything you need for a good life is in the Bible, but that you don't need everything in the Bible to achieve a good life (by 'need', I mean follow or put into action).

At the end of the day, it's a record of man's search for God and for himself. It reflects a primitive culture's worldview. But, for me, there are flashes of profound tenderness--talk of love, caring for the weak, etc. (Basically the New Testament--minus some troubling things, as always). One of the new terms is "Red Letter Christian", meaning one generally follows the words of Christ.

Love, in the end, is both the method and the goal. One wants to join with Love/God.

I think it will make sense when it needs to make sense, but oftentimes not before. It's between the human heart and God.

    Peace

I don't think that any of you have studied your bibles or the history and evolution of it.
Your responses indicate to me that you listen to your preacher and accept without challenge all he says 'cause you think he is an expert on the subject...you follow you do not study and "think!"
You mention this god thing and love in the same breath! Egads! This biblical god thing alledgedly created man in "its" image and then flies into psychotic rages and murders 'em all!
Pls convince me that killing the life you create is love!
if you try, you are just as 'nutty" as your god thing.

The most important verse in the bible? It would have to be the verse that sets the rest of the book up for failure:

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."

Here are some of my favorites to help wipe out those pesky un believers!

    Kill Brats

1   From there Elisha went up to Bethel.  While he was on his way, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him.  "Go up baldhead," they shouted, "go up baldhead!"  The prophet turned and saw them, and he cursed them in the name of the Lord.  Then two shebears came out of the woods and tore forty two of the children to pieces.  (2 Kings 2:23-24 NAB)

2   And he smote of the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of Jehovah, he smote of the people seventy men, `and' fifty thousand men; and the people mourned, because Jehovah had smitten the people with a great slaughter.  And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before Jehovah, this holy God? and to whom shall he go up from us?   (1Samuel 6:19-20 ASV)

3    Meanwhile, the LORD instructed one of the group of prophets to say to another man, "Strike me!"  But the man refused to strike the prophet.  Then the prophet told him, "Because you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, a lion will kill you as soon as you leave me."  And sure enough, when he had gone, a lion attacked and killed him.  (1 Kings 20:35-36 NLT)

4    The ark of God was placed on a new cart and taken away from the house of Abinadab on the hill.  Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab guided the cart, with Ahio walking before it, while David and all the Israelites made merry before the Lord with all their strength, with singing and with citharas, harps, tambourines, sistrums, and cymbals.

5    When they came to the threshing floor of Nodan, Uzzah reached out his hand to the ark of God to steady it, for the oxen were making it tip.  But the Lord was angry with Uzzah; God struck him on that spot, and he died there before God.  (2 Samuel 6:3-7 NAB)

I have an abundance of these thanks to the all loving word of god! smile

The problem with the bible is people. They take scripture and run with it in the craziest directions.   I believe God intends us to love each other. Everything else is second. We should even love the sinners, tax collectors, psycho's, the marks and the alleged marks, the brats, and for sure even the earnest's. Aside from that, the rest is just words.

I just found this thread and have not read all comments.

    I'm not a biblical scholar.

But somewhere in the bible, there is something about the golden rule, so, do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

This rule is the one that brings peace, not conflict.

Where is it in the bible? Maybe, Greek One, you cite a passage that conveys this idea?

If a man still prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall say to him, "You shall not live, because you have spoken a lie in the name of the Lord." When he prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall thrust him through.   (Zechariah 13:3 NAB)

      Gee, thanks earnest.
I admit I've not studied that in depth, but have always taken it as a judgement of the Lord's upon false prophecy, relating to the fact that all Believers should love the Lord more than they love their family, even.
God should come first in our lives, second to none.

..No, I don't take it literally as that a parent should kill their unbelieving son or daughter, in case that's your slant!
But I do think it shows God's intolerance of evil.  And He IS the One who has the right to do with each of us as He wills.  He made us and He can take us out, anytime.....

Thanks for the reference, actually.  I could stand to study that one some more.   You might also get some more Christians' opinions on it too.  Especially since I know you're very focused on those types of Scriptures.

I feel very sorry for what it does to those who have to put up with your interference in their lives and listen to your moralising.

I know this is not in the bible, I wrote it, but it's noteworthy:

Two slaves are in a mud pit together. One slave lifts his shackled hand, waves his outstretched finger and says: "You're not working hard enough in the mud pit". The other looks and says, "And we are both still slaves in that same pit".
Just then, the slave master came by and asked which one was a better slave. The one who accused the other answered and said, "I am the best slave you ever had master!". "Good, said the master, "Now, get back to work!"
The other slave he took from the mud pit, made a king and called him brother.

what is the most important verse in the bible ?

I think there are very few verses in Bible which were spoken by Jesus; and which have been mentioned in the Bible. In fact, I find only one suche verse in the whole Bible which he spoke while he was on the cross,"Eli Eli Lima Sabaqtani"; it is in Hebrew; and there is not other verse in the whole Bible.

It means "O'God , O' God; Why you have left me?"

And God Allah YHWH heard this one of Jesus' prayer in agony and He saved Jesus life on the Cross. We should thank God Allah YHWH for saving Jesus' cursed death on the Cross. Shouldn't we?

    Thanks

The most inportent is Acts 2:38, Repent and be babtised for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. With out   abeying this command, you can folow every other command in the bible and it wont do you any good. You have to be free of all your former sins to even get on the hyway to heaven. Then god will teach you with the aid of the &Holy Spirit how to follow his commands.

I like a spot of murder in my bible verses. smile

Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death.  Such evil must be purged from Israel.  (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

You should not let a sorceress live.  (Exodus 22:17 NAB)

"If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives."  (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)

A man or a woman who acts as a medium or fortuneteller shall be put to death by stoning; they have no one but themselves to blame for their death.  (Leviticus 20:27 NAB)

Whoever strikes his father or mother shall be put to death.  (Exodus 21:15 NAB)

That is all most people need to straighten them out, a spot of murder.........

    Death for Cursing Parents

        1) If one curses his father or mother, his lamp will go out at the coming of darkness.  (Proverbs 20:20 NAB)

        2) All who curse their father or mother must be put to death.  They are guilty of a capital offense.  (Leviticus 20:9 NLT)

      Judge not, and ye shall not be judged;
      Condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned;
Forgive, and ye shall be forgiven

      Seems to me that when we do any of these things outwardly;

what is the most important verse in the bible ?

There is only one verse in the Bible in the original language Jesus and Mary spoke.

    Matthew 27:46
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying: Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

This must therefore be the most important vesrse of the Bible; rather the only one.

Jesus was promised by the Creator-God Allah YHWH that he would be saved a cursed death on Cross.

And God did save him; but the Christians don't believe in him; alas!
