   Why is it still a taboo subject for so many?

      It could be partially due to the double standard.  You know the same logic which dictates that ideally women should be virgins until their wedding day while "boys will be boys".  Gives the guys more permission to be sexy.
      
      Also, it seems to me that sex has always been a bigger deal to the men and boys I've known.  It's not so much that the women had a problem talking about masturbation - it just wasn't that much a part of their thinking.
      
      When you don't think about something very often, making a comment on it is like getting a rusty wheel to turn.  Kind of awkward.

    My first orgasm was at 7 too. We had our first try at chin ups on the monkey bars, I was flexing and working EVERY muscle in my little body, started to feel kinda good. Funnily enough I tried every play time to do a chin up and have never managed one!
    It was years before I found out what I was doing was giving myself tantric orgasms (from muscle contractions instead of touch).     As per my understanding human beings are the only species capable of masturbating. Lust is the prime factor which prompts for masturbating and this is common in all species. If all other on the universe can control the lust with out masturbating why not the human being too. I have nothing against masturbation. Just out of curiocity I wanted to know more if possible.
