Should we respect each other's religious holidays?

Should we as a people from all races and religions respect each other's special holidays and religious celebrations and not criticize those who have a different culture and beliefs?

Being respectful does not mean that one has to participate or believe!

    So, definitely!

We as people should show respect for one another's beliefs and celebrations. It is not our place to judge.

I suppose it depends on how you define respect?
I think we should respect the beliefs of others but I also believe in the separation of church and state.
I show the respect I am shown.
I don't have personal respect for appropriated religious holidays, a common practice among many religions. That doesn't mean that I intentionally disrespect their beliefs, but I don't honor them either.

Yes, I can and do, respect that someone else is celebrating an occassion to themselves.   I have no problem, if for some reason, you want to celebrate the 19 of January, the 29 of Feburary, of the 16 th of July..............

But do not expect me to celebrate some date that means nothing to me, my culture, my heritage.

Do not expect me to mourn because your dog died.   I get your grief, for my dog died also.............but I do not miss your pet...........I miss my own.

Yes, we should "respect"..........most of us do, but we are not required to do likewise.   Requiring that we do, is obscene.

Re:   I am a Christian............who does not celebrate with decor, trees, and gifts galore..................today, at work, I was  asked to draw a name, for " secret Santa"........it was an awkard moment!

I simply said, " I choose not to particpate, please withdraw my name from the pool"...................I did not demand that others should not take part.  They are entitled to do as they see fit, I respect that.

I expect them, to accept, that I pay tribute in another fashion.   Courtesy and respect, are closely related.............accept, but do not demand.

I think that love and peace are possible.  Call me crazy, but we can reach this goal of peace on Earth if we all open our hearts and minds.  We all come from the same place, and we're all here to better ourselves and realize God.  That said, we all understand things differently and from different perspectives.  It's a fool who doesn't accept other religions merely because they're different from one's own.

I believe we should respect people.  If I respect you as a person, it doesn't matter how much I agree or disagree with what you do or are involved in, religious or otherwise, because I will honor the free will in you to choose what you choose.  Of course, the ethical questions come into view when if a person's beliefs become dangerous or harmful to others.  But even then, I can disagree and even take action against an issue while maintaining integrity for respecting the person.

I think it's the first step to a more open-minded world. It's strange that no matter how old we get we still manage to act like children, arguing over who's right and who's wrong, especially when it comes to religion. The important thing that we must remember is that we are all children of God, Allah, Yahweh, Christ, Buddha, Gaea, etc. We are all too focused on piety when we should be focusing on the message itself, which is respect for your fellow man. Sure we may have our different views, but everyone is entitled to live, pray, worship, and pursue his/her own destiny, because that is what being human is all about. (I read another one of your articles about trying to say Merry Christmas in 8 other languages, and I actually attempted to post some season's greetings in my comment, but to no avail. Couldn't figure out how to get it to work.)

Yes we should also go further and try to understand other people's religions and not just listen to one sided explanations of them.

Certainly..its all part of unconditional Love....As a child when I went to my friends house I would respect his parents rules..even though I may not agree...because of our friendship and out of respect for his parents :0)

Thank you so much for your comment! If we all could be more respectful and understanding of each other, the world would be a much better place.

Yes we have to if we have the chance, i would love it to be more of a voluntary attitude instead of compulsion in some quarters.

OF COURSE YES WE HAVE TO RESPECT EACH OTHER'S DIFFERENCES IN CULTURE AND BELIEFS... WE GAIN NOTHING ON DISCRIMINATION.

YES. YES and YES. We have our own beliefs if people respect our belief then we respect theirs. If they don't respect our belief just don't mind them and respect them. If that is their opinion for our belief then be it. Life is just a matter of respecting and accepting the opinion of someone. smile

Of course, we ought to respect others' holidays. A religion is a package that allows people to worship, or connect with their God. Holidays are part of the connection between the people of same religion and their God. So, how can we bother other people for that??? except if we are not at peace in what we practice or who we are and reflect it on others...and disrespect them.

Yes, of course. However, this doesn't mean that all religious holidays should be official public holidays.

Yes! Respecting another religious faith's holiday is acknowledging our differences as people. If we were in agreement about everything, I believe this would be a robotic world with nothing to look forward to.

Respecting others religious celebrations allows us to see how similar we are in our own practices. It is a confirmation that humans that have a faith are on the right track. Its how we move along the track that makes it a bit different.

Yes. I just had a conversation about this with someone who was ranting about western religious folks.

Everyone has their own way of resolving their religion. If a person has no spiritual conflict and is not in a deviant religion that leads to harm for others, then I respect their ability to exist without being malignant.

We all are human beings and it's a fortune to have human life. We all belong to different races and religions and all of os have different belef systems and different methods of celebration.

Human birth is the most precious git, gifted to us to serve others, not just to eat, drink , sleep and make merry. It is gifted to us to show love , respect and service to human life.

Yes definitely we should all respect others religious celebrations and also appreciate them. If we show respect and appreciation of others religious celebrations we will also get the same for ours also.
AND we should also remember  ' THERE IS ONLY ONE RACE ..... THE RACE OF HUMANITY..... THERE IS ONLY ONE LANGUAGE ----- THE LANGUAGE OF THE HEART ..... THERE IS ONLY ONE RELIGION --- THE RELIGION OF LOVE ------ THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD --- WHO IS OMNIPRESENT.'

I am a Hindu and am looking forward to Xmas -- a time of celebration and showing respect. Being a Hindu I have gone to church and a Christian school and had taken part in numerous Christian dramas and plays , singing hymns and reading Bible and saying prayers. Never was a time I had shown any disrespect.

If all have respect for others then eventually peace can be achieved.

Respecting other people in their religious holidays is not tantamount to taking part in their religious celebrations. Unless these people will force us to join with them, then, they don't deserve any respect at all.

We should respect other holiday's. But it can be challenging to know when someone is celebrating a holiday or what the holiday means to them. Working at a resort, we get people from all over the world with different cultures, beliefs and holidays and I have to sometimes watch what I say or do to make sure I'm not offending anyone.
If you are celebrating a unique holiday that might not be well-known and someone says something about it, take it as an opportunity to teach them about the day. I would rather have someone tell me about the day and what it means to them than for them to walk away with their feelings hurt and not educate me.
