We made an update to the site a few minutes ago.  The big changes with this release are the addition the hub categorization tool, and some enhancements to the main search box as well as request and forum search.

    Categories
From this point you must select a single category for all new hubs.  We've also provided an easy tool for categorizing your old hubs.  We aren't going to start using the categories until we see that a good percentage of existing hubs have been categorized (hopefully in about a month), so please spend a little time each week categorizing your old hubs.  You can read more about categories on the HubPages blog.  Having categories is going to pave the way for a lot of neat new futures down the road.

Larry did the yeoman's work of coming up with more than 5000 categories, and Fawntia wrote the code and built the great categorization interface.

    Search
We've switched over from using the built in mysql full text search to sphinx, for our search services.  Sphinx is both better, and much faster, and will enable us to make a lot more search improvements going forward.

As always, please let us know if you notice any issues with the areas we've changed, or anything else unusual on the site.

      Hi Anamika,

You are right.  We don't yet have a Numerology Category.

Please use Religion & Beliefs/Metaphysics for now.

When we add Numerology, it will be a third-level category under Religion & Beliefs/Metaphysics.

Am in the process Larry and thanks for the entertaining snippets as it's SOOOOO boring doing so many!

I have one question.  Where should my guitar models hubs go?

Entertainment, music then there doesn't seem to be anything for instruments or am I missing something?

I did a search for guitar and got nothing - nothing for piano, or any of the main instruments... seems a little odd?  Drums are listed though...

I also can't find a home for anything to do with recording equipment - recording studios, music recording etc.

      Hi Julie-Ann,

Thanks very much for your questions!  smile

Guitar models would go in Entertainment/Performing Arts/Strings.

Maybe we should change the name of this to "Guitar & String Instruments"

Piano would go in Entertainment/Performing Arts/Keyboards.

Maybe we should change the name of this to "Piano & Keyboards"

For Hobby-related Recording Equipment, recording studios, music recording would go in Games, Toys, & Hobbies/Hobbies/Sound Engineering

For Professional Recording Equipment, it should go in Technology/Sound & Video for now.  It may make sense to add a Recording Equipment subcategory under Technology/Sound & Video.

I believe that Structured Settlements should go in Knowledge & Education/Law/Procedures & Litigations.

Guitar models would go in Entertainment/Performing Arts/Strings. OK

Maybe we should change the name of this to "Guitar & String Instruments" YES PLEASE CAN WE?

Piano would go in Entertainment/Performing Arts/Keyboards.

Maybe we should change the name of this to "Piano & Keyboards" I THINK SO...

For Hobby-related Recording Equipment, recording studios, music recording would go in Games, Toys, & Hobbies/Hobbies/Sound Engineering  I FOUND THIS BUT IT'S NOT CORRECT FOR MY COMMERCIAL AND PRO RECORDING PAGES

For Professional Recording Equipment, it should go in Technology/Sound & Video for now.  It may make sense to add a Recording Equipment subcategory under Technology/Sound & Video.
YES PLEASE CAN WE DO THIS?  I HAVE A FEW HUBS ALREADY, MORE ON THE WAY AND HAVE BEEN ASKED FOR MORE BY CLIENTS...

I believe that Structured Settlements should go in Knowledge & Education/Law/Procedures & Litigations.
I HEAR YOU BUT HAVE TO SAY THAT MOST PEOPLE REGARD THIS AS A FINANCE TOPIC.  IT'S NOT REALLY A PROCEDURE AS SUCH (IT'S A RESULT AFTER A SUCCESSFUL PROCEDURE) AND IT'S NOT A LITIGATION.  I'D BE FAR HAPPIER TO SEE SOMETHING IN THE FINANCE CATEGORY

I can do if required.  I guess i just don't understand why such a HUGE, discrete specialised  topic and one of adsense's biggest payers gets shoehorned into a category that doesn't really fit instead of giving it one of its own - and there are plenty of hubs on the topic too!

Are the music categories being changed and if so when is likely just so i can give you some peace and check back at an appropriate date!

I apologize but I am  unclear on the category that you feel is missing.  What category would you like to see in order to accommodate Structured Settlements?

Would you like to see a Structure Settlements subcategory in Personal Finance? Would that address your concern?

Can we still suggest sections? I have been trying to categorize my hubs and there isn't a veterinary section, animal health, or say dog> dog health> cancer, disease, illness, etc.

Also, can you add American Pit Bull Terrier to the list of dog breeds? Although, the breed may not be accepted by the AKC, it is accepted by other dog registries.

And, since there is a flea & Tick control under the cat section, can there be one for the dog section?

Man I'm sorry.  I should have checked out the animal categories when you posted the thread... :-/

Also, can you please explain why Body art, such as tattoos, piercings, etc are under Arts & Crafts.

    1. larryfreeman profile image83
larryfreemanposted 15 years agoin reply to this

      Hi Whitney05,

      Thanks for your questions.  smile

Veterinary issues can be placed in Knowledge & Education/Medicine/Veterinery Medicine

Animal Health should be placed in Pets & Animals/Animal Care & Safety

I think that we will add an Animal Health subcategory here later.

I am open to your suggestion for American Pit Bull Terrier category and for Flea & Tick Control under Dogs.  For now, feel free to use:

Pets & Animals/Dogs/Dogs Breeds for the American Pit Bull Terrier hubs
Pets & Animals/Dogs for Flea & Tick Control.

Body art is under Art.  This is where categories get a little bit imperfect. Art has been placed in Arts & Crafts.  We did this because in my view, painting, sculpture, and body art have a stronger affinity with needlework and handicraft then it does with Entertainment or Education.

      -Larry

      1. Whitney05 profile image82
Whitney05posted 15 years agoin reply to this

Thanks Larry... I think the Animal health subcategory would be great. I would better define things..

I will also admit this is a pain, and using the plain larger categories with one subcategory, without using the mini-subcategories is so much easier, although probably not the intent of the update.

          Hi Whiney05,

No difference.  It just shows that sometimes we forget to remove the category in pregnancy.  Baby Names in my view should be in Home  & Family/Babies.

I've got mine categorized as best as I could. There are quite a few categories that might need some fine tuning I think. As Arts & Crafts... Quilting, Crochet, Knitting,
How to preserve old photographs... Is really not an art or craft but that's the best place I could find.

Larry I love the quotes... what a megatron job hubteam... You're all in for an enormeous nightmare, I can just tell (and I'm one of them causing them too, sorry) what a needy family we've become

      Crochet is found in Arts & Crafts/Crafts & Handiwork/Textiles/Crocheting

      Knitting is found in Arts & Crafts/Crafts & Handiwork/Textiles/Knitting

For preserving old photographs, we have the category:  Arts & Crafts/Scrapbooking/Media Preservation

It is difficult sometimes when we have to use the "Startover" option. If a back button was also added it would have been nice.

There are similar problems with poetry. If you have a single category for a particular form, e.g. sestina, why not have one for ballade?

I'm going through my hubs now. Most of them do not fit well into the categories that exist, so I'm choosing the closest category possible. I do not see any category for "government." Many of my deal with government, and not necessarily politics. For instance, my hub discussing the advisability of substituting dollars coins for paper dollars. While there are political implications, it has more to do with government processes than politics. It is possible to talk about government waste and inefficiency without emphasizing politics. Just one man's view.

I'm also having trouble finding a category for my hub on advice to retirees. I've placed it under politics and social issues, but it really isn't politics. Ideally, I would like to categorize it as Social Issues -- Retirement -- Advice.

      Hi William,

The retirement category is found at:
      Health/Age & Longevity/Retirement

I've added a "government policies & processes" category:
      Politics & Issues/United States/Government Policies & Processes

I've added a "military & armed forces" category:
      Politics & Isuses/United States/Military

      Cheers,

      -Larry

Sorry, but I'm still going through my hubs, and I don't see any category for the military or armed forces. Again, I've selected "politics" because it has "social issues" as a subcategory, but neither label truly applies to my hub.

I appreciate your prompt and positive response, Larry. Thank you. Those categories will be a big help that will affect lot of my hubs. Thanks.

Once again I've come up against a stone wall. I am still trying to categorize my hubs. There is simply no category that fits this hub:

    http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Old-Days-We … -After-All

I see no category that covers nostalgia, history, social analysis or anything remotely reflecting what my hub is about. I'd still like to see something like "Purely Opinion," which I've seen elsewhere, or "Analysis" or "Review." I'm stuck -- and "done editing" apparently doesn't work until a category is selected.

I have many other hubs that I anticipate having similar difficulties in selecting from the categories that now exist. How about a category that reflects "Social Discourse" or "Social Commentary" or some similar idea?

Larry's our category master, so I'll let him respond to your specific request.

But, I thought I'd point out two things -- 1) you can always change your category later, so there is no need to hold up publishing a hub, and 2) While, we recommend choosing the most specific category you can, you can always use a second level or even a top level category if there isn't a specific "leaf" category that matches.  For instance this hub you could simply put into, I suppose, "Politics & Issues" or "Politics & Issues -> Social Issues".

I'll do that for the time being, Paul, but I'm hopeful that Larry will consider some kind of "Social" category. The "Politics & Issues" category, however, clearly puts the hub in the "politics" category (because the "issues" part is so closely tied to the "politics" label.) This hub, and many others I've published, are not, per se, "political issues" but "social issues."

      Hi William,

It seems to me that your hub would fit in:

      Knowledge & Education/History & Archeology/Twentieth Century/Nostalgia

I think that you raise a good point about "Politics & Issues."  This is really our place for Social Issues.  For this reason, I've renamed the category from "Politics & Issues" to "Politics & Social Issues."

So, the place for hubs about social issues will be:

      Politics & Social Issues/Social Issues

      -Larry

Thank you, Larry. I appreciate your help with my category selections. The "Social Issues" category will make life a lot easier for me.

I thought I would let everyone know that I am done now...I feel rather accomplished and very glad that it is over. While categories are great, they are much easier to use while creating new hubs! Thanks for all your hard work.

I have trouble deciding which category or sub-category my hubs go into, but I figure that I can move them if I find some place they fit better.
