Why penalize for low participation?

There are some days when forums get tired of me, I am here every second.

Been tired today so not much activity in questions and forums. I did not leave much comments on the hubs I read either, just a few.

HP is penalizing me, I lost 4 points because of this. I hate being below 90, now I'm 88.......I hate that score, I wish HP would get rid of it. I logged in with 92, then around midday 91, then afternoon 89, now 88.

After 2 years on Hubpages I've learned to ignore my profile hub score. The algorithm is convoluted and impossible to understand in real time. An individual hub score, on the other hand, triggers “do follow’’ code on your hub page at a specified level that can impact ad sense revenue.
Check out the HubPages Knowledge Exchange Forum for more information.

I doubt if it is because of forum participation. Some people never participate in the forums, or occasionally and have high hubber scores.

It goes up and down, I hardly think it's a penalty.

I like your score Rebekah, how do you keep it there?

I'm told that HP has some scoring thing going where we gain or lose points based on activity.

hmm, I don't know, but I don't think lack of forum participation would be considered a penalty.
I don't purposefully do anything to affect the score. It's just a combination of factors they use. I know original content is important and helping out in the community by reading and rating hubs, answering questions, etc.

You're right, the score is based on activity.  I rarely comment and haven't written a new Hub in ages, but I'm a sucker for the forums and that's what keeps my score high!

The thing is, Cardisa, scores don't matter a damn.  I don't even know why we have them - the main function of this site is to write to earn income, and scores have absolutely no bearing on that objective.  You have to learn to ignore them!

I am trying really hard to ignore it Marisa, but my HP addiction won't let me. I am fine when it drops to 90 but I get all worked up under that.

          Thanks. smile

According to the learning center, "Hubber Score (also commonly referred to as a HubScore on HubPages) is the score that is associated with your profile, and can be considered to be somewhat of a composite of your HubScores as well as measurements of your general behavior on HubPages."

So the Hubber Score is a composite of your overall Hub Scores in addition to your general activity on the site: how frequently you publish, community activity, etc. are probably counted in the "activity" category.

@Leah, What a coincidence, I was just reading your hub of the day!

I know all that and that is why I was thinking that my activity is causing the drop. There are days I am more active and my score goes up.

Toady was different for me, maybe HP realized how tired I was and gave me a tired score.... lol

If it's about a combination of activities, I'm really baffled.  I came on this morning at 96.  I published two new hubs I had been researching for some time, got caught up on new hubs from those I follow, commented, entered a few forums, and answered a couple of questions.  I hadn't been on for some time due to family obligations, but even so the score had been 96.  Now, after all this activity, my score literally just dropped straight down to a 93.  I don't usually pay attention, but I thought it was odd by the suddenness of it.

          1. Cardisa profile image93
Cardisaposted 13 years agoin reply to this

You know Terri, I have to wonder if the changes made recently, even yesterday, has anything to do with this. But on the other hand I don't see a lot of complaints.

For me it's the sudden drop from 92 to 88 in one day that has me baffled. I have to wonder if I did something extremely wrong to generate such a drop in my score.

Cardisa, I have noticed across-the-board fluctuations in Hubberscore from time to time, which I assume must be HubPages tweaking the algorithm so everyone is affected.

Lisa is right, I think - every time you publish a new Hub, you lower your score.  The reason being, your HubScores feed into your Hubber Score, and a new Hub always starts with a low HubScore.

That's one reason why some Hubbers like to leave a Hub to "mature" for a while after they've written it, before they publish.  That way it's already over 60 by the time it hits the site and affects your Hubberscore.

Cardisa: The profile score is mainly based on the number of visitors. It used to be calculated every 24 hours but appears to be done now during the day. cool

Luis, are you certain about that?  and, what is your source?  That's an observation I have never made, and it seems unusual to me, since I have never achieved a very high number of visitors.

      1. Cardisa profile image93
Cardisaposted 13 years agoin reply to this

It's kinda weird, this score thing. On weekends, we get less visitors and my score was 90 all through the weekend. It went to 92 on Monday, stayed that way yesterday and today dropped to 88. I don't know if traffic is the cause of it.

The only thing I can think of is, I answered less questions, posted less in the forums and made less comments in the hubs I read today.

      2. LuisEGonzalez profile image80
LuisEGonzalezposted 13 years agoin reply to this

This is based on over 6 months of carefully analyzing my numbers. For example I can pretty much correctly guess what my  profile score will be tomorrow based on the number of visitors that I get today.  Here is a recent one week analysis:
        Monday-score of 90-visitors 90
        Tuesday-score of 89-visitors 109
        Wednesday-score of 92-visitors 133
        Thursday-score of 95- visitors 108
        Friday-score of 93- visitors 98
        Saturday-score of 91-visitors 104
Sunday-score of 92-visitors 128....so my Monday score should be at around 94...and it was.

From what I have seen the profile score is largely based on the number of visitors from the previous day (increase or decrease in percentage), with that said, I have also been noticing some very recent fluctuations that occur during the day so that leads me to believe that HP has changed some things.

This is not to say that other factors don't come into play, but at least until recently , they didn't appear to carry much weight.

        * The profile scores are factual, the number of visitors is not but do represent the actual percentages of increase or decrease, since I have heard it said that we cannot disclose earnings or visitors totals. cool

My forum participation isn't a lot, and it doesn't seem to hardly have any effect on my scores.  But when I've got a lot of visitors who are being busy on my hubs, that's when I see my score really go up.

Cardisa, this is an older hub, but it gives some helpful info about hubber score.

As Marissa said, don't worry about it. After a while, it's just kind of there and you won't notice it too much, unless it happens to be triple digits. That's always nice! I think, bottom line, if you're contributing to HP in a positive manner, whether it be by traffic coming into the site or giving out helpful advice, the score is an incentive. I can see why they give a score. That HP addiction can be crazy at times! smile
    http://darkside.hubpages.com/hub/hubberscore

This is from an older forum post by Paul Deeds. I found it on the above hub:

Some of the things we look at when computing your author score, in no particular order:

    1. your participation in the HubPages community, such as:
      - reading and commenting on other people's hubs
      - forum activity
      - flagging content violations
      - rating other people's hubs (thumbs up and down)
    2. total number of published hubs
    3. the hub scores of your published hubs
    4. the total traffic across all your published hubs
    5. how recently you've published
    6. your fans

There is also a small random component that helps to keep things shuffling a little.  Because of that, I wouldn't put too much faith in any cause and effect relationship that you think you see -- especially for a move of only 3 points.

I'd agree with those who don't believe forum participation has a direct effect on the score.  I've disappeared for a day/few days, come back, and discovered my HubScore to be 100.  Other times, if I have no real work to do for a few days, I'll keep popping back on here and writing up a storm (as with the last two weeks or so).  My score has been in its low range.  My joke for myself is that I'm being rewarded to stay away, and maybe it's HP's subtle way of sending me a message.  smile

I had 148 views in the last 24 hrs, so why hasn't it gone back up. I don't remember the last time my views went below 100, for the past week I published several hubs that generated a lot of traffic, some days 250+ views.

    This is driving me crazy.

Let it be Cardisa.  No one knows exactly what factor does what.  It's a combination plus a deliberate randomizer so the same people don't hog the top slots all the time.  Although one or two seem to.

There's two major scores in my opinion that count.

    1. Adsense clicks.
    2. Google.com traffic.

I will say that hub hopping, and flagging, seemed to have a positive effect on my score.  Reviewing 25 hubs a day for example.

But I've done my bit of trying to get the points up.  One other very important point.  Get into the high nineties and you are guaranteeing that the copiers will start taking your work.

  15. Lisa HW profile image63
    Lisa HWposted 13 years ago

I know one thing:  That's if I want to pretty much guarantee that my score goes down, all I have to do is write a Hub.  lol   I've always assumed that must shake things up for awhile and set things into some kind of "mixing process" again. On the one hand, I honestly don't pay attention to the score (for the most part).  On the other hand, I think it's natural to be more pleased to be in your higher range.  Those times when mine has been "good and high", if I want to write a Hub I'll think, "Oh, gee.  I kind of hate throwing off that good score this soon."  (but I always go ahead and just wait for the drop that sure seems inevitable to me).   big_smile

For the last week or so I've been hovering at my low range (not today and for now, but most the time).  I've had some time off, so I've been on the forums and even answering questions.   I'd just crept up to my high range when I wrote a new Hub - so here I am mid-range for me.  hmm   (Yeah - I know I said I don't pay attention to the score, but it's pretty hard to ignore a bold-typeface number in your face when you sign in here.  smile   I should have said that I don't care about the score or worry about it.

Cardisa, with the way things have book looking (score-wise) over the last week or so for me, I was preparing myself to cross that "barrier" from the 90's into the 80's.  In fact, I'd come around to imagining dipping into the 50's (or something like that), and I just decided I couldn't care about it even if it did.

Honestly - with author score and individual hub scores and traffic ups and downs and money ups and downs and disappearing and re-appearing "accolades" etc. etc. ...    a person would go nuts.  80's is considered a good range.  50's for someone who isn't new is not, of course; but I don't even care if I see 50's.  After awhile, you just have to be immune to it all and write, do your thing, etc.   big_smile

Give the forums a rest!!!!  Try hanging out in the Questions and Answers Section!!!  I totally LOVE the Q and A.

I can bust a paragraph or two - and folks can either love it, hate it, or ignore it - either way, I'm already answering the next interesting question - if I can.

I stayed out of the forums almost my entire first year.  I was told that I was banned - nobody told me that I was banned for three days, and not forever.  I assumed it was forever!

I don't see a reason to take these here forums so seriously any more  - they sort of distract me from what I've already decided I am going to write about next. . . .
