Would you consider living with your in-laws for 6 months to save up money?

My wife and I moved states to be closer to her family and decided to live with her parents until we saved some money for a house. 6 months later we are finally moving...but it's been rough!

I moved in with my mother in law to save money for a year. 3 years later we are still here. We left once we had enough money than came back to help her out. It can be rough.

If there was enough room in the house for each of you to have some private space, then yes, for a short period of time, say 6 months to a year.  It can be rough, but still have advantages.  We have 2 young children and it would be nice for them to have a steady relationship with their grandparents and it would allow us to go out every now and then if they were willing to keep an eye on the kiddos.  Plus, it could be financially beneficial to all parties if worked out in advance.  As long as there are some ground rules, I would do it.

Yes, it's nice that our son is around his grandparents consistently. I never had that growing up.

Does it have to be my in-laws? Can it be my parents?

I guess for all intensive purposes of this question..... yes...because it would benefit my family in the long run. With my in-laws though it would be a rough ride. I'm not "blessed" with the easiest in-laws to get along with let's just say.

My parents....no question. We get along great, they don't over step their boundaries etc. etc. etc.

Good for you for planning ahead and looking to purchase a home. Good for you guys for being disicplined enough to stick to the goal and only 6 short months later accomplising it!!!

In a heartbeat, I adore my in-laws ^_^ I think my husband would have a harder time with it than me.

I'm about to start my own journey at my in-laws at the end of this month...I have to say I am not looking forward to it at all!  But, they are helping us out so if they are okay with it so am I.

No, forevermore no. Not for 6 months, not for six days, not in a haze, not in a maze, not for six minutes, not for six secs, not for my spouse, not for my ex ....Well you get my drift.

I think that there have to be other reasons than just to save money. For us, it was a temporary stay while working in between school semesters when no other housing was available. Yes, it can be difficult, and all parties involved need to make extra sacrifices for it to work, especially when there are small children and the in-laws are in their elderly years.

We moved states and so it made sense to do that until we could get on our feet.

WAIT, I can answer that from experience. We are. lol
That's right, we are currently living with my in-laws, paying off debt, and eventually saving for a down payment on a house.
Though we didn't origionally get here soly because of that, and it's been no walk in the park (as I'm sure you've experienced), it's already helped us get almost $7,000 out of debt in one way or another. It's truly been a blessing (and a curse at times) lol I'm sure it will all be worth it when we sign those closing papers on our first house. Congrats on yours.

Yes, we've been able to pay off debt as well which is great! Good luck with your journey and remember patience is a virtue!

No, not anymore. I´ve done that for 10 months  while we were searching for a house. It took too long to find one and my hubby and I were glad we were away from my parents-in-law. I´ll better save my nerve than  save money.
