How much time do you typically spend on a quality hub?

Quality hubs being at least 500 words, several images and links...   I wish I could say I produce a hub in 30 minutes, but it just doesn't happen.  With image searches, formatting, editing, I easily spend an hour and a half (or more) on a single hub.  Is that typical?  Thanks!!

Sometimes, when I write a creative story for a hub it can take just a few hours. However, it can take me as much as several hours, with breaks, to write some hubs that need a lot of deep research -- this is before I even have to start looking for images or videos and then setting up all the different capsules, which can take quite awhile.

So, the amount of time I spend on writing a hub varies greatly with each one.

I just spent over 5 hours researching and writing a post with over 300 words and several images. I already know the topic, text art so that helped cut back on research time.

It's a quality post to me. I don't see the point in another 200 words just to be filler.

True that putting in extra just to be filler can be a waste.  The big point with 500 words is that, that is the amount google looks for to index hubs.  Shorter hubs typically won't end up in the search results.

I just published a 610 word Flash Fiction.  From concept to publishing it took about five hours, but I did take a couple of breaks.  For a hub that requires research, probably five to ten hours.  But I'm guessing because I don't keep track of the time. Good question.   I will be interested in seeing the responses.

I wish to write hubs with above 500 words minimum and usually it comes between 800-1000 range.  I always put photos.  Writing and typing is different exercise for me as first I write on a paper and then go for typing.  It will take a few hours for me.  I spend good time on editing work.  Still most of my times are spend for writing thoughts (subjects) onto a paper.  Time doesn't matter, it is quality that determines the fate of your hubs.

Thank you for this question.I used to spend hours before interesting and useful hubs. If i want to comment in a detailed manner it will take some more time . If the hub is attractive i used to read again and again .Then I spend some more time  in writing  comments and editing.. I can't calculate  how much time i am spending for it. Any way it is interesting to read quality hubs.

I spend about an hour; less on Hubs that I've started in the past and pull into HubPages to finish. I write mostly about crafts, so I've learned to take pics of things I'd normally make and file them. One day, they may fit perfectly into a Hub exclusive!

I use the HubPages standard of a Stellar Hub - 500 or more words, plus at least 5 photos, and a video if possible - as my definition of a "quality hub." My hubs are long - often 2000 words or more, but I write quickly. I haven't tracked time per hub closely yet. But I'd say I produce a quality hub in the range of 5-10 hours of work. (I'm trained in professional estimation; my off-the-cuff estimates, like this, are usually dead on.)

It goes longer if: 1) It's a conceptual topic, so images are harder to think up and find; 2) I do my own images; 3) My logic gets complicated and I have to re-sort my ideas, or split one hub into several.

Of course, the other element is research. I'm writing a hub based on a book right now. If I add in the time invested in reading the book carefully, that's several more hours.

I'd say your time is about right. I wish I could do one in 30 min. I could probably write something in 30 minutes but as you said, you have to find images, proofread, label your tags, etc...... It can easily take 4 hours.

This is a great question! I think with all the research, unless you know straightaway where to go, it will definitely take at least an entire day to produce one.

I seem to spend longer than most. Nearly all my hubs are at least 2000 words in length, and many require research on several websites. I usually use a lot of images which also need to be found and checked for copyright, or I need to upload my own photos and maybe amend them in photoshop. I don't like gaps in the hubs, so I try to adapt or lay out the text and the photos so there's no blank spaces. I even go to the extent of changing words and sentences so they fit better on the page. Some of my articles are science based so I then have to proof read, not only for grammar but also to make sure the text is coherent and easy to understand. I'm only an amateur writer, so the end result is that most hubs probably take almost a day of fairly solid work, but working 2 or 3 hours each day, I get through about four per month. I'd like to write more, but I do take a lot of pride in the hubs  and won't publish until I'm happy. Alun.

Same here Greensleeves, if you can't be proud of your hubs, there's no point publishing them. So far I haven't had any of my hubs idled, and with google preferring quality, I'm doing well with the one's I have.

My thanks. I've only had 3 out of 90 hubs idled - all 3 ironically, reviewing and praising HubPages! - and tho' traffic is still low, it is steadily rising all the time. Hopefully this is down to recent HubPage changes and Google emphasis on quality.

That sounds like me too... I have 2 kids under the age of 3 so I can only spend 2 hours a day working on my hub.  It takes me a week just to publish one Hub, but I am a bit of a perfectionist so I go over my hubs with a fine tooth comb.

My Hubs tend to be a lot longer than 500 words.  It's hard to tell how much time I spend, becuase I usually write them over many days.  The most important thing, besides quality writing, is getting the facts correct, and that requires research time.

From several hours to a day. It depends if I write my own thoughts which is easier or I use material from different sourses which have to be adapted to the hub. Besides I work full time and often just unable to finish any hub in one day so it turns into a several  days marathone smile

  13. JKenny profile image91

It varies for me, sometimes hubs can take several days to put together, sometimes they can take just a few hours. It all depends on how many words I write and the amount of research I do. My longest hub is over 4000 words long and that took four days to put together.

I can take quite a while with a hub depending on how much research I need to do. So for a subject that doesn't need too much anything from day to two days, but it can be up to a week. I also like to put finished hubs aside for a day or so and then go back and review them - it's amazing how many typos etc., that I find when I go back with fresh eyes!

Very much agree it's a good idea to take a fresh look a day after completion. And if I don't want to wait to publish, then I'd check it again soon after it's come out of pending status. Fresh thoughts may allow small improvements to be made to it.

If it's something like a recipe I can usually manage it in half hour, but the likelyhood is I already have it typed out somewhere on my computer, as I sort recipes for my shopping, so its just a matter of transfering it usually. If its a review of something it's usually an hour and a bit. If its an informative hub anything from 2 hours to 10 hours for research, writing, editing, proofing etc it really depends on the subject matter. My hayfever one took me nearly a week of research before I even started writing.

Most of the time is spent before I commence writing, because it would be on a topic that either I know well or have done a fair amount of research on. Research would be one at length; the hub will emerge only if and when I think I have done enough preparation.

Some hubs I could write in less than a couple of hours but it's not always possible. I write many hubs which are on very specific coaching principles and ideas where more than around 500 words would send the writing off-topic as many people searching for my work are looking for specifics

Writing 500 words is never really time consuming. It's what I do around that that's often time consuming. Tables are never quick to produce with the hubpages tool and quality photos often take time to upload.

I've just got back from a trip to Marrakesh, Morocco so any hubs I publish are as a result of research from a 4 night 'holiday' so the planning has been going on for a long time and been inspired by experiences and what I learnt. Research has been required on top of that too.

For many of my sports hubs I would say I do an average of around 1-2 hours research before and during writing on the Internet and in a selection of textbooks+ coaching manuals.

I try to use all my own photos now for hubs instead of relying on content from other sources. That's time consuming too from selecting images, post processing and preparing them for publishing. Often I find that uploading photographs has been a barrier to swift publishing as a 15 megapixel photo from my DSLR although have now started to optimise and compress those images.

I wish I could publish a hub in 30 minutes but I fear the quality wouldn't be there.

    Article research - 30 mins
    Images search- 5-10 mins
Curating and creating Article - 30 mins.
    Proof reading- 5 mins.
Total duration- 140 mins ( approx 2  and half hrs )

I'd say so! Depending on the topic, my level of authority, and its depth, I can easily take between 1.5 and 2 hours. Some are more generalized and don't require detailed explanations or reviews of different places. Others, like my review of the Albuquerque Biological Park, took hours! I'm currently working on another one detailing an awesome part of Albuquerque, and I'm halfway dreading it because it will take hours and hours!

Remember this: The longer you take, the better the hub. The better the hub, the more views (& earnings) you'll get! Plus, think of how rarely people really work on their projects anymore. I think it's awesome you're working so hard!

As per my opinion every hub you are bringing before Hubpages is a quality hub whenever  authored by you. However, it is not possible to publish a hub  overnight as it requires a detailed process from choosing its title, utility, thorough revision, editing, adding other capsules and images which are appropriate etc . Thus  an article requires sufficient time involving frame of mind, approach towards its benefit to the general public and adding beauty to it. If the work is appreciated by people after  reading your hub, then only it is considered to be a quality hub. We can not assess it on our own  a quality one but we can give our best to prove it to be a quality hub.

I spent two to three hours on any article I write. I check sources to see that they are accurate (this used to be a prerequisite for all quality journalism). I check for youtube videos. I check keyword tools. I sometimes do my own artwork or look through my own photographs, etc.

Anyway who is a professional writer will tell you that it does NOT take 30 minutes to write a quality article.

I do a lot of recipes and even though they are more than 500 words with original text on nutrition, origin, or some other information on the food, recipes will usually take less than 1 hour due to the fact that all my recipes are my own, with my own photos and experiences. Other hubs which require a certain writing style or research will definitely take longer, even days to complete.

Yes more than an hour and a half spent on creating a hub is normal. Don't forget we hubbers don't just write our hubs we also proof read them, edit them to read fluently. Perfecting a hub and making it to a good quality does take time. A very simple hub can take me up to 4 hours to write and maybe longer to edit. A hub that is longer on  a more complex topic an take up to six hours to edit and even several days to write.
