CP, there are a few thoughts I'm having right now, not fully formed, but I will try to show you which way I am thinking:
It's about how we use the concept of "God." We hold to beliefs in order to fulfill a need. That need might be to give a sense of purpose in life. It might give solace in painful and sad times. It might be to give a community a sense of cohesion when, without the belief(s), there would be splintering and separation. It might be a perceived source of strength to improve a family's hopes that their child will be saved from death. When crops are failing, threatening starvation, a belief in that "God" might give a greater confidence to face life. All these and other needs can be fully justified and when "God" is there as the supernatural support, then who of us is able to refute it? Even if we don't believe in it ourselves, we can still allow support for those who are in need. There is no harm done.
Maybe the greatest negative use of "God" is in the area of bullying, control over others, a sense of selfishness and greed, where it's all about ME and MY needs, at the expense of others. For me, even when fanatical people claim a direct relationship with "God" to the extent that I, as a non-believer, fall outside of their cosy relationship and therefore at my self-chosen disadvantage, even here I see a strong attitude of selfishness and "I'm alright, you are not."
The deception in someone claiming that he or she loves me in the face of this selfishness is, for me, the height of hypocrisy.
Mo, I hear your stories, you points of view, your considered replies, and I know you are open, warm, loving, so whether we agree on any matters of religion is totally irrelevant. I am open to continually learning new things, new points of view. It seems like you are also. Bless you.
