oh, excuse me, i meant "alter egos".... *cough*

i have one. his name is Quincy. he is a pug. i told everyone from day one who he is and what his agenda is.

some people gots like a jillion sock puppets and get this, they all post to each other like they are real people exchanging real thoughts.

it is a very twisted situation.

so this forum will be the sockpuppet confessional. come here and be cleansed, washed in blood of the lamb and be renewed. don't you get tired of lurking in back alleys?

this concludes this public service announcement.

I'll 'confess' that I DO NOT, and I find it more than a little ridiculous that some people seem to be obsessed with the whole "you must be X" and "Oh don't you know? She's really Y" nonsense. I decided to ignore it after the first dozen times or so but it really does seem to be an obsession for some people.

cosette, wow, I think you nailed it. one person can be so many people, the style is clearly the same person, the pics, the behavior... this could be fun making them obvious to others since this one in particular is deceiving many on the forum.

I can understand someone having an alter ego account, but one person having so many different accounts reminds me of the movie Sybil, the girl with many different personalities.
let's see, we have a musician, a bad poet, a girl with opal eyes...   and more. sic, it really is sic.

    1. Rochelle Frank profile image98
Rochelle Frankposted 15 years agoin reply to this

You are right-- the sock puppet is trying to deceive-- the "other identity" is separating or assuming a different demeanor for a practical purpose.
We don't necessarily have the same personality or way of expressing ourselves when we are at our place of business, at a funeral, or at a picnic with our family.

Yes, you nailed it Rochelle... It's the deception part that becomes a problem.  I'm just me, myself and I here, however I am considering becoming Sumo man, a famous wrestler fleeing the paparazzi in Japan.  I will have met my future wife on a plane on the way to the USA, but we can't legally wed in the United States, so we're now en route to Guam to seek wedded bliss.  She likes Country, but I'm a punk rocker, a bit of a predicament we're working out with the monks.  But, I was BORN to write...

See, I don't mind alter egos in the forums at all. Sockpuppets on the other hand, kinda irritating.

I do go cruising around in disguise from time to time but I don't get into conversations with people who don't already know it's me. And, I don't get into debates of any kind. I've done a couple extreme hub makeovers & what not, and screwed around with some buddies, but I've never deceived anybody.

I'm not the type to get offended by somebody's alter ego - actually I get a kick out of them. But, many people don't like it so I avoid it. smile

and I just happen to have a real fondness for sumo.  I think it's because sumo wrestlers look like big ol' babies (maternal pull), but I really did used to follow it on some sports network or another.

I liked akibono, the hawaiin guy (go U.S.) but he retired and I think the network quit carrying it anyway.

I always thought the def of a sock puppet was someone who puposely put on this other personality (in the forums) simply to bait and confuse people and make arguments and try to make their agenda appear to be more successful and meaningful (esp.in politics and religion) - and that they are the essence of deceit.  Having another identity that writes in a different genre makes good business and writing sense to me.  I have another one.  It doesn't matter, really because I don't bring my other identity into the forums very often.  I'm sure none of you would consider me deceitful for not making the other hubber I am more accessible, or even noticeable.

I think this is part of that cyber world where real world rules just aren't that meaningful or even make any sense.  The more creative and entertaining we can make our cyber world, the better for all of us.  Got personalities?  Bring em!  the more the merrier!  Love you all!

well, yes, same sox marriage should not only be supported, but possibly demanded, since sox who are not the same should be avoiding each other, in my humble opinion.  I do not think the sox should be mixed that way.  It is an abomination and probably nobody's gods like mixed sox marriage!  what will they think of next!

I can't help it, in this way I am old-fashioned,  I think sox should stick to their own kind! but I know that they often separate and it causes many problems for society, on the whole.

of course, sox and shoes are always very close!  and I have known sox to be close with several shoes, and there is never any jealousy or fighting.  I hadn't heard of anyone who would be daft enough to want sox/shoes marriages in this country, but stranger things have happened!  It might be best, really, that way the sox wouldn't have to go from shoe to shoe, never knowing whether they would end up under the bed alone or tucked in some sweet little moccasin, all cozy!  It might be easier for us, too, if we knew which sox preferred which shoes!  I will have to pay more attention from now on. . .

what about the holey socks?  should they marry at all?  or should they remain celibate and dedicate themselves to the church?  I find now that I really know so little about sox! (or socks?)  how will I know which socks are christian and which are jews?  muslims?  hindus?  shintos?  buddhists?  (well, actually, I am pretty sure all my own socks are zen buddhists, because they really seem to get along pretty well and are easy-going, also they do pretty much what they want to do!)

Holey sox need to stay celibate.  I have one that occasionally tries to fool around with an atheist sock of mine and I WON'T have it.  I know, in the end, nothing good can come of it.  Little mixed holey and not holey baby socks.  No, not on my watch!

I say holey socks ought to be sent to live on an island somewhere!  They're a drain on the resource of drawer space, and there isn't going to be any drawer space left for anybody.  Besides, there's really no fixing a holey sock.  Sure, we can try to sew them, but it's only a matter of time before they're holey again.

I agree, Lisa.  Darning doesn't work.  When you really think about it all socks are really swingers.  They start out as pairs, but just revert to their mismatched/swinging habits as soon as we close the drawers.  It's like a nonstop key party in there!  Sheesh!  I have a Nike and an Adidas who are constantly up to no good, really hard on their other halfs.  I sometimes just give up and let them have a day together.

        1. mega1 profile image80
mega1posted 15 years agoin reply to this

I am so happy this subject has finally come up!  There is nothing more disgusting in my little world than mismatched socks! socks who just will not stop trying to mate with the wrong kind - and old socks, like that green argyle, who hang out in the back of the drawer accosting the young half-socks and trying to get it on with them! That old argyle even tried to get it on with an old christmas sock, older even than himself! (both were single at the time, but still!) disgusting?  you betcha!

Then those old holey socks who keep hanging around trying to convert the young sports socks and making suggestions that border on lewd!  I won't have it!  Today I have instituted a practice of euthanization for all holey old socks and old socks (especially argyle) who are without mates.  They are going into a plastic, airless bag and from there straight to the dumpster.  I am not even going to cremate those old buggers.  They are ugly and although they come off as holier than thou they are really just as immoral as a sock can get!  I refuse to darn and I don't care who knows it.

But, how sweet are the young, well-matched socks who line up together in the front of the drawer, hugging their mates and calmly waiting their turn!  What a lovely sight their clean faces and smiling hole-less heels!  I could spend hours arranging and rearranging them by color, fiber content and style.  Some of my socks have a lot of style.

Oh, and the other day an old black mateless nylon stocking somehow got into the sock drawer and was slinking around being so sleezy I had to toss it into the rag bag and will use it to strain the cheese!  I am merciless when it comes to immoral stockings!

    ooh good title...smile

i respect you for that. you have no idea how much. because you say a lot of controversial things sometimes, but you do it as yourself. you have to admire that.

my girlfriend has a funny thing she does...when we have Chinese food and get fortune cookies, she appends "in bed" to the end of the fortune when she reads it out loud, like:

"you will have many interesting adventures." [in bed]

    or

"the winds of change surround you. use caution today."[in bed]

that sort of thing. so let's all add "sock" to the end of our IDs. i shall be "cosettesock" wink (jk)

i let Quincy post i the forums sometimes but usually in pet forums or to add humor to some thread. everyone knows he is mine and he never uses his powers for evil.

haha! big_smile i don't know but 'softcornhippo' is funny, i have to admit.

i agree, but have to add that, IMO, we should let people know who we are otherwise they might be forming friendships and confiding in someone (letting them into your facebook worlds, etc.) who is an 'enemy' or something, which would be uncool. don't you agree? i mean how can you base a friendship on deceit. that's just my take on it.

WS this is genius! smile go for it that would be great. big_smile

that would be a good blog. and hub. i am having fun with Quincy smile

well, i have to say, there are a lot of creative people here at HubPages, the best writing-for-money site ever smile

just how many sockpuppets does one hubber need?

I think that sometimes, at least in the way sock puppets are being used in the forums, the need to be accepted or part of a group is being manipulated by the puppeteers.

In other words, if a lot of people believe something, it has more weight and is more likely to be considered true. Inventing an imaginary support base, by putting your solo belief out as being accepted by hundreds of diverse entities (that are actually hundreds of pretend entities) gives the impression of an idea being an 'accepted' belief by many. When in fact it is only the belief of one person, or just a few people.

Again the herd mentality is being used. Someone that has a belief that is not supported or accepted uses the sock puppets to make it seem like it is supported and accepted, which makes it easier for someone in a herd mentality to join in said belief.

"If lots of people say 'it' is true... there must be something to it that I'm missing... it must have some merit..." hmm

Which is why I pay more attention to what is said than to who says it.

yes, we all agree that this is not nice what some people do with their sock puppets!

but how do you feel about same sox marriages?  don't you agree that when it comes to socks they should stick to their own kind?  In other words same sox marriages are the only solution when it comes to keep socks together.  Perhaps this will keep them from becoming sock puppets - since that is what a lot of people do with their old, holey socks - make sock puppets out of them!  I'm sure you will agree that the old, holey ones should be sent off to the rag bag.

well, yes, it is absurd to talk about socks this way - and I realize you don't feel like being humorous about the subject.

I did say some serious things - I disagree with you (again) about this because I think having several identities is ok, even a good thing, if you use them creatively and follow Hubpage rules, and don't use them to further some agenda you have.  In other words, if we are allowed to have other identities (and we are) then, why be upset when people do?  Some people's original identities relate to others here in a sock puppet manner - posting the same inane questions over and over and not really reading the responses - only wanting to spout their self-righteous b.s.  I think it gets amazingly funny sometimes, and that is the ONLY reason I join in these silly discussions.  I don't believe anyone really comes here to get educated to to form opinions about things, do you?

well i am sure i read somewhere a while back that Hubpages doesn't permit malicious individuals to come back as sockpuppets.

in any case, this reminds me of Gallaxhar in 'Monsters vs. Aliens'...he cloned a jillion copies of himself. i think HubPages should at least restrict the number of alter egos one person can have. i can see two, maybe three even, but more than that can be problematic as we have seen. anyway i am just musing. i love HubPages and am grateful to be a part of such a great site.

Hubpages Staff is free to correct me, but my current understanding is that HubPages policy allows an individual to have as many alter egos as they may wish to whatever purpose.

I do agree on loving this site.  I love the way my poetry lays out on it, and I truly enjoy the many many real people on here.

I have only this profile name.  I tried a different one in the past, fleeing my stalker, and kept it only briefly and not in use with this name.   I had some dance fad videos up on it, the new kid stuff... hardstyle, c-walking.   I folded it by depublishing after maybe a month.  At that time, I was still hoping to escape my stalker, which has proved to be an impossibility.  I took this name back.

It was unsatisfying for me to not be myself.  I have since moved the dance youtubes I like to random Hubs for my own enjoyment. smile

            Dear Mega,

You fixation with sox and sex is perfectly normal. What's not to love about sox? You can wear dem on your feets, or your ears when dey gets cold, or roll dem into balls and nosebonk dem all around da house for hours of fun. Sex is a common object of fixation because it feelses good, so something dat feelses good can't be bad, so don't worry about dat either. Is dat what dat is? A warrior woman? Cool. I thought it was a guy jamming on the guitar. Avatars are like clothes dat you humans wear to express demselves. You want to express power at da moment, so dat is fine. Self-expression is different dan deliberately trying to fools people. You are already getting on with your life, every day. I hope dis helps. Can you please put forty-five Snausages Breakfast Bites in an envelope and Fedex dem to me? wink Thanks! 'k, bai. ~Quincy

I have dissociative identity disorder and I only have one profile.  Making extraneous profiles to interact with oneself online falls into a completely different category than DID, most likely sociopathy which is not remotely related.

What dissociatives do is only post in tangents.  The rest of the time, they might be gardening or cleaning their house, or cooking or reading or watching movies/news or learning languages or playing MMO games or hanging out with family or friends or their partner.

Such a post might be taken as attacking and discrediting dissociatives simply for being abused and being ill.

      For the record.

research it from other sites.  I think a fair number of 'dissociatives' here are parody attacks in diguise by the same woman stalking me and others, lotta identities or as she might say "multiple personalities".

she has been doing this to me (and others) for six years.  she takes my history, my actual life and distorts and adds insulting lies and sordid false details to it and Hubs as if she were me.  some kind of sociopathy with obsessive-compulsive features plus sadism, my armchair diagnosis.

she also has a partiality for fake hospitalizations, hospice and dying, across the internet which is Munchausen's by Internet syndrome also related to sociopathy.  one way for others to "see" her clearly under her aliases.  such stories are to explain her being missing on a site to others she is talking to currently to allow for her to stalk others elsewhere, historically.

          and she thinks I'm crazy?

whatever it is she has that makes her stalk me and others with such dedication, it makes me glad I only have a harmless dissociative condition.

please don't take personally ANYTHING anyone says about mental illness in these threads -  nobody knows what each other actually may or may not be diagnosed as - and no one really intends offense.  most people don't really understand what multiple personality disorders are and us the term "multiple personalities" in a derogatory way to describe what some people do with hub accounts.  that's all that's going on here, a discussion about whether or not using multiple accounts on hubpages is good or bad or both!

I assume a lot of it is just playing and related to some of the fun interacting.  I am not as touchy as all that.

However, I do believe some few posts are sideways commentary to me from the individual who is stalking so many others Hubbpers here on HubPages right now, including stalking me, and meant to be nasty.

I was happy to fan you as safe.  You are always funny and interesting but safe is a big deal to me including worrying about others who talk to my stalker's alter egos.  I finally fanned a few of you today that I am certain are safe.
