We just recently released a small update to the site. There are lots of little things, but the two changes that you'll probably notice are:
1. Tag suggestions -- we now have the ability to analyze the text of your hub, and can suggest tags that may be appropriate. Look for this on your hubs at the bottom of the tag box.
2. Ad Zones - possible ad zones will be displayed as a green box on unpublished hubs. As soon as a hub is published some or all of the green boxes will be replaced with advertisements. This does a couple of good things, first unpublished hubs will load and render a bit faster, and second you won't see the poorly matched ads that result from google not being able to access and analyze the unpublished hub.
We hope to open up one more big feature update later this week -- we're just finishing up a little more testing on it. Stay tuned!
As with any release, please let us know right away if you notice any new problems using the site.
Edit: Also Larry posted some interesting thoughts to our blog today, Is a Blog Enough? No it isn't according to Larry. Be sure to check it out.
Nice changes, thanks guys!
Paul, how do you determine which tags are appropriate? Are you using Tecnorati, Yahoo, etc.? Or is it just confined to the current set of Hubpages tags? Or even just to keyword density of the text itself?

We're looking at the text of the hub itself and calculating related keywords, much the same way google would to match relevant ads to your content. Hopefully it will help people choose "better" tags. We've also got some other ideas on what we can do with the data, consider this the first installment ...
Great update! I have tried it and it gave me some good tags which I hadn“t "seen". Of course people still have to choose right because some of the suggestions may not be good tags after all

Can it be used retroactively-- or is it for new hubs?

Tags suggestion is a very useful tool. I found it helpful in improving traffic. Very useful to lazy people like me.

Awsome new feature. I just gave it a try earlier works perfectelly.
Alex
Works great thanks - just used it on all my hubs!
Great thanks a lot.
I just saw the suggested tags on my hubs and have a few questions:
1.Are these tags going to be based on what people search about, on the topic of the hubs or just a suggestion based on the hub's text?
2.Secondly, I use google trends to find out the most searched keywords on a topic but the tags suggested here are somewhat different so are they going to be search friendly?
3.On some hubs I saw a lot of suggestions about related tags so how do we figure out how many tags are appropriate so that there isn't a lot of keyword stuffing?
Definitely a good feature is added.
Suggested Tags is a easy way to add more tags without searching and selecting..
This way Our Hubs will get more traffics..
Thanks everyone who created this...
Great new feature - thanks a lot.

They are based on the text of the hub.

Our goal with suggested tags is to improve the categorization and organization of hubs within HubPages. I think improving the navigation experience for HubPages users may, as a side benefit, help us with search engines but that is yet to be seen. Using google trends to help choose your tags seems reasonable as well, just make sure they are related to your hub.

I'm not quite sure what you mean about related tags, but we don't add any tags to your hub for you, we just suggest some that you might want to consider. The appropriate number of tags depends on the length and the subject of a hub. For an average length hub, somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-30 tags seems reasonable to me.
