Concern about Copied Content

We've heard several concerns about Hubs getting copied and losing traffic and we know how frustrating this is for the author.  Google tries to identify the original content creator and show that in the search results.

If you have a copied Hub that is getting outranked in the search results, please post the phrase and a link to your Hub.

For the purposes of this thread, only examples will remain published.  I will take the examples to Google.  The more we get the better.

Here's how to post to this thread.

    Phrase: "example phrase"
    Link: "link to Hub"

The copied content must rank higher than your Hub to be a valid example.

Thanks for posting the examples - I've looked at all of them.  I want to help people understand a little bit how we think Google tries to identify original content and how to tell if you're site is getting hurt by thieves.

First, we want search engines to recognize HubPages as a source of original content.  We try to detect duplicate content on the site and remove it quickly.  We believe this helps with overall reputation of the domain as a source for original work.  As Google crawls us, they see HubPages as a source for original content.

I'd like to break Wilderness's example down.  Hopefully this helps people see if content is getting hurt by scrapers in Google search.

The phrase Wilderness gave as an example to find the scraper is: "There are only a few necessary tools for bending electrical conduit. Benders are the most obvious, of course, and "

        https://www.google.com/search?q=%22Ther … p;ie=UTF-8

Clearly you can see that scraped content is ranking higher than his own.  However, Google treats long queries differently.  I couldn't find the post on google search to get the exact number, but google treats really long phrases differently.  So in general, we don't get too concerned about a scraped content outranking original content when it's not resulting in lost traffic because the only way to find the scraper is with a really long phrase that often requires quotes to get exact matches.

As the query is shortened by one word, his work outranks the scraped content.
        https://www.google.com/search?q=%22Ther … mp;bih=676

As the phrase is continually tightened up, you can see his work outranks the scrapers.
        https://www.google.com/search?q=%22tool … p;ie=UTF-8

Finally, I like to get to real results.  What do people actually search for and how does his Hub rank.  Notice that his Hub is around the 5th or 6th spot competing with other high quality content and the scraper isn't present.  That's a sign that his Hub is behaving in a very healthy manner.

        https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+bend+conduit

In all the examples I coud verify actual search terms sending traffic, the Hubs were outranking the scraped content.

You, as the owner of your content can file DMCA requests.  I cannot on your behalf.  However, I can ask our partners to look at the domains and see if they would like to continue to do business with them.  I hope they will stop which will take away incentives to copy content.  Thanks again for the examples.

Now, I'm going to open this thread up to comments.  Feel free to ask questions.

Thanks so much for the explanation, Paul.

I might add that that particular hub has seen a drop in ratings (and traffic) for the keywords it's written around, even though the scraping site isn't above it.  It used to be #2 or #3 instead of #6. Hopefully it has received a gentle google slap for being a duplicate - I've filed a DMCA on the copy and it should be gone in a day or two.  We'll see.

            Thanks Wilderness and Paul,
Although at first I got scared, as I have time to think it over, I do not think any piece stolen is outranking mine. My traffic is about the same as it was last year at this time, it doesn't seem lower. Thanks for showing us what to do, I know it's time consuming to write instructions for everyone.

Sorry Paul, your first link is semi-ruined - the search shows up but the site shows a 404 error.  Pretty soon the search won't work either.

Since we are the copyright holders of our content, does Hubpages have a trademark or copyright on Hubpages.com website format?

kakun dot ru has copied the whole Hubpages website format (exact setup) and features many of our hubs, well over 300. Many of us have been alerted that our hubs are there but we can't do anything about it because of the country of origin. My DMCA's kick back to contact host. Host has no contact info. Writer Fox gave us a form letter to use, but there has been no acknowedgment. Since this involves a much bigger issue - your very livelihood as owners of Hubpages.com format and presentation - what can you do to protect Hubpages?

We are at a loss in getting content taken down from this site. But since the site itself has been copied at a much bigger level, perhaps your legal team can attack this from that angle since you have a much bigger claim and you are a "bigger fish" than we are, maybe you can get more attention to this matter than we can.

Rachael, I just posted how I handle this in a newer thread on this topic here: http://hubpages.com/forum/topic/121972#post2586213

Note that since we own the copyright to our own hubs, HubPages cannot file DMCA complaints on our behalf. Legally only we can do it. As for your question about the copyright format, you can specify that HP should display that in each of your hubs. When you edit a hub, you'll find this option on the right hand side.

            1. RachaelOhalloran profile image83
RachaelOhalloranposted 10 years agoin reply to this

noted.  I just left a comment there.
I was questioning Paul on whether he had a copyright on the whole format. I do understand about our individual hubs, that was not my question. The site hijacked Hubpages format, then hijacked the hubs. Since we have had no luck, then maybe the bigger picture - the whole site format - can be addressed legally

This comment was very enlightening into how pages are ranked by Google in search results. I've written online for many years, but I remain clueless about this whole general area of seo, scraping and duplicate content- even though I especially had trouble with scraping back when my site was on geocities (dates me).

I think this has been a major benefit of belonging to communities like Hubpages, learning about how the internet works and how that affects my writing.

I just recently found that my hub title and name was copied and embedded into 2 different webpages, yes, I googled myself to see why my traffic was going down and found those websites. I reported both of them to google and bing for copywrite infringement and am waiting to hear back from them. (unbelievable that someone would stoop that low on a personal hub) but it happens if you get alot of traffic for the subject you write on, which I guess I was the only person who had this out there until now....

when you go into google, you can search 3d rose afghan, my hub has been at #1 for many years. When I went into bing, it had another site above mine with my main info pasted into their website, but currently bing and google are working on that, it is going down in the search (until hopefully the creep gets pushed off) but thats my only example I have. I have filed the DCMA on both Google & Bing and am waiting to hear back on how they are going to handle this.

We are in receipt of the additional information.  It appears that the claim is for the use of the words “3D Rose Crocheted Afghan – DataEntryTherapy on HubPages”.  We are not finding a basis for the claim that these words enjoy copyright protection.  For information on material protected by copyright, please see ******
We will be happy to revisit this concern if there is material protected by copyright (e.g., your photos) that are being infringed.

So my response back was that my name should be copyright protected but I knew they were not going to do anything because of how they kept asking for more information and they had everything. You know, if I copied microsofts name and embedded it in my hub I bet they would think differently....what a joke! Looks like anyone can steal your stuff and its ok.

I'm going to post a paragraph, but about 2/3 of a long hub were stolen from me:
                    Mine--http://jeanbakula.hubpages.com/Cancer-Moon-Sign-People-Caring-Cautious-Changeable

"They are very well versed in ancient knowledge that is being rediscovered. Since the Moon travels through all twelve signs of the Zodiac in about 28 days, you will see Cancer Sun and Moon natives in twelve different lights! You won't ever be bored for sure."

                    http:// cancermoonsign.post.yt/cancer_moon_sign_
They called it Cancer Moonsign People, Caring, Cautious, Changeable

"They are very well versed in ancient knowledge that is being rediscovered. Since the Moon travels through all twelve signs of the Zodiac in about 28 days, you will see Cancer Sun and Moon natives in twelve different lights! You won't ever be bored for sure."

And they took a lot more, most of the hub word for word. They also had the nerve to rip off a paragraph from my personal blog. When I try to go back, it's a place called getresponse.com

I should also note that most of the stolen hubs were my most viewed hubs before the theft.

Not sure what to make of this, but I am sure many of you have come across this where my article content is copied (completely, or portions of) and throughout it is embedded links to advertising sites.

Is this happening to anyone else, and what can be done?

              Sample phrase:

"The topic of Canada is as broad as is the country is vast and diverse. Canada is world renowned for its friendliness, cultural diversity, peaceful nature, sprawling lands, fresh air and natural beauty. There..."

              Link to my hub:

              Links to copied content:

              (example 1 - embedded hyperlinks throughout entire article) http://writerscouch.com/forum/topic/can … is-country

(example 2 - phrase copied only but hyperlink at end of blog to advertising site)  http://gab.omnilogic.net/view/post:1197821

A hub of mine used to get some Google traffic but it has all but stopped. Has my hub become de-indexed?

The phrase I used to search for it  is:

"I am especially fond of all types of clematis, and the beautiful pink/lilac hues of 'Josephine' is breathtaking."

Search results - https://www.google.com/search?q=I+am+es … mp;bih=799 - do not show my hub at all - only a scraper site which has since had its account suspended.

I cannot find my hub at all in Google search, even with the exact title in quotes "Top 10 Climbing Plants for a Small Trellis", but it seems to have plenty of backlinks (not made by me) and webstat checks, again not made by me.

If the site doesn't have Google ads, do a WhoIs search to find out who the hosting company is, and file a DMCA with them.  That works too.

My sciatic hub has been copied verbatim and in part so many times. I've filed DMCA take-down notices galore, but many are ignored. Also, Google is not fast about removing 404 pages from those copies that have been taken down, even when requested.

Phrase: "Sciatica, or pain along the sciatic nerve, can be overwhelming. It can send shooting or burning pain from the lower back, into the hip, and all the way to the feet."

              Hub: http://nifwlseirff.hubpages.com/hub/Sci … l-Remedies

Most of the results are now either pages and sites full of links (which I never submitted to), or copied content in spam comments. I have no idea how to combat *these*, as DMCA notices may not or don't apply!

How much does copied content drag down our stats and traffic?  I find copied stuff all the time, but most of it is on such spammy sites that it barely registers in a search.  I guess what I need to know is how diligent do I need to be about searching for copies and filing complaints?  The process of all that is time consuming and takes away from writing more hubs.  When is it worth it to hunt for copies?

I tend to only go looking when I notice a drastic drop in traffic.

My sciatic hub dropped to less than 1/6 of its normal traffic, virtually overnight, many months ago. When I went looking for answers, I found so many copies (including the images too!) After getting rid of the worst offenders via DMCA complaints, this hub still only reaches 1/4 - 1/3 of its previous Google traffic level.

A couple of my other hubs have had similar issues in the last 4-5 months, and still haven't recovered.

I don't know what other more experienced hubbers do about this...

Firstly , i wanna thank Paul for this great effort. The sad part of publishing an article is when it gets copied and the most depressing is when it outranks your own original content in Google. There are lots of ways to control and minimize it for our own blog (preferably self-hosted), but for hubpages, we have certain limitations.Howevere, Google is updating and transforming its algo to fight these content thieves. From our side, we can easily check if our content or hub is being scrapped and can be able to take appropriate actions. Some of the sites i use for this purpose are
              1) copyscape.com ( for checking if any of my hubs are being copied)
              2) myfreecopyright.com ( After i publish my content publicly :- this site will record and mail the exact time of publication and digital signatures of the published content, it may not stop the hubs from being copied but is a great tool if we need to complain in DMCA)

              Hi Paul,
I've reported close to 20 copyright infringements in the last 2 weeks, Google (Blogger), LinkedIn and various other sites, I know that at least one was ranking higher than my Hub but don't have it on hand just now. A few have already been removed by Google so it may be amongst those.  However if I find it again I shall let you know.  It has been very time consuming following up the removal of copied content and I am now starting to put copyright warning within my Hubs text as the pages I'm finding are a straight copy/pase of my work.

I have found you 2 examples where copied content is ranking ahead of one of my Hubs.

              My original Hub (Published in 2010) : http://stricktlydating.hubpages.com/hub … S-MESSAGES

This Hub ranks 3rd in google when I use the first line of the text in Google search: "I am living large and taking charge"

There is 2 different pages of copied content which is currently ranking higher than my original work:
              URL 1: www.wattpad.com/usuer/FedzD21
              URL 2: http://vampirefreaks.com/journal_commen … ry=8107592
              * Both URL's have been reported to those sites last week but remain indexed at present in Google, ranking higher than my original work (Which does have a copyright warning on the page).

              Hope this will help!
Thanks for taking up this matter too.

Rank 4th when the 2nd paragraph copied "That awkward moment when you take off your sweater".

3 other sites rank higher than my original work published 19 April 2011

I'm sure there more out there too yet for me to check!

I noticed the copies of your hubs are still there.  I'm curious to know why you haven't gotten them taken down yet . Blogspot is owned by Google.  They took the copies of my hubs down wihin 24 hours after I filed my DMCA with Google.  Did you use their online DMCA form? It's quick and easy, just as theraggededge said in the prior post. Don't put it off and let these thieves win.

I think the time it takes google will be different for each individual. I only say this because yesterday I got a message from google that they had finally checked the DMCA complaint I had filed about that scraper who was stealing all of our content a few weeks ago. All it said was that they looked into my claim and it appears that the website was already taken down... so in some cases it can take weeks before google looks into it.

I recently filed 3 separate DMCA complaints with Google comprising 50 urls. Some sites were automatically removed whilst others took up to 3 weeks to be manually reviewed and removed.
In that time, several of the offending sites were showing internal errors or account suspended (by hosting company). This meant that Google declined to delete the url as it was not infringing. All rather irksome.

The Blogspot url was dealt with separately and that only took a day or two to resolve.

Good Lady Penelope, you will struggle to have the entry de-indexed as the duplicate content is no longer visible and Google will return a "url not infringinging" reply to any DMCA notification you submit to them.

Something similar happened to me. Content was removed but the offending page was subsequently redirected to a different entry, prior to Google investigating my DMCA complaint. The original site listing is still there and still ranking above mine. I can only hope that, in time, it will drop.

However, there may be hope for you. Was your copied content removed as a direct result of this thread? If so, then maybe the Mods can take this up directly with Google.

Yet another example of legitimate writers suffering at the hands of  plagiarism.

I had a similar experience. When this happens, take a look at the subject field of the email you get from Google claiming that URL is not infringing. If there is a case number in the subject then you are in luck. In my case, the person who plagiarized my hub had rewritten it so that it didn't match, and reposted it, after my DMCA complaint. But I explained this to Google in my reply, keeping the case number in the subject field.  Shortly after that I noticed that the listing had been removed.

No violations but I did find one that was 42% copied by a site based in China. They copied the format and pertinent content but removed and/or changed some words. I will be filing a complaint on that one. But the other thing I found and am not sure what to do about is that there seems to be several sites all leading to the same video of my chosen topic with an offer to buy their e-book. All these sites do not have my content posted on them but they do have sections of my content in their search descriptions that show up on google. Is that legal? Would I file the same type of DMCA complaint and should I list the sites here on this thread? Thanks!

I'm pretty sure Googel advise it Elena

When the entire article is copied it is sufficient to say something along the lines of:

" The copyrighted article “XXX,” which can be viewed at the authorised URL given below, has been used without my permission. The copyrighted article begins with the excerpt "XXX."

I usually list the first few sentences.

However, when it is only elements of the article that have been copied, then you will need to be more prescriptive and detail these.

In all honesty, I took a cursory glance at both your Hub and the Blogger post and couldn't identify where exactly the copyright breaches were. Due to the volume of DMCA complaints being received, then I doubt Google does very much more. It's helpful to lead them by the hand.

As Glenn Stok stated above, Blogspot url's are usually actioned pretty swiftly.

                        Best of luck with this.
