I just gotta say that I am glad I put my work up here, if I was defending my work on a blog alone I would not
    1. realize my work has been stolen in the first place, not so quickly at any rate
    2. be able to get this theft as seriously taken, being a lone writer complaining to the site and wondering who else to complain to

I know that it is totally devastating for some members here having their hard work stolen. I do think that hub pages itself will be able to take the kind of action that is needed to put the breaks on this sort of scam. We can make our complaints and should, but hub pages can get legal action taken if it gets to that point, I would not be able to do that on my own and I really appreciate knowing that if this site does not clean its files of copied works they are going to be in serious hot water! These things take time its true but it will happen, these duplicates will be removed and if necessary legal action will happen. I have faith in HP, this site rocks!

All this makes me want to flag duplicate stuff that is posted on HubPages more. If someone can join that site and do this, they could also join this site and do the same thing with other people's writing.

Docsite does not give you the ability to flag articles and I can see that is why such a thief could exist.

Well one thing that has been made utterly clear in these many pages of forum posts is that we ARE a community and we banned together to stop someone from copying content...for over a 24 hour period of time, we watched out for each other.

Sunforged and thranx are amazing MEMBERS who helped bring this issue to a head and get it resolved.

As a community, we CAN do things to change what we don't like.  So start flagging the copied content you see on Hub Pages, flag whatever Hub you see that does not fit into the TOS.  Lets do a bit of our own housekeeping smile

Still not seeing it, Whitney - I can imagine that the CEO is very grateful that this was brought to his attention. No harrassment, but advice from one businessman (Sunforged) to another. I run my own business and hope that somebody would do the same if the positions were reversed - in this case, the potential ramifications for his company were huge. A Google slap was the least of their worries.

In fact, if they can guarantee that this type of thing won't happen again, I may be interested in using their site. Their swift action could lead to positive outcomes smile

I'd say the activity I noticed during lunch on Twitter could've been seen as harrassment when coupled with the likely throngs of emails and DMCA reports and phone calls received.

Thank you sunforged for your efforts.

Maybe next time something like this happens (because it has happened before and will happen again, it's the way of the internet) the affected parties will refrain from accusation, negative commentary, and thousands of posts on the topic.

Can we return to our regularly scheduled HubLove now?

Thanks to sunforged, thranax and everyone else who helped identify the problem and took steps to get it resolved. Great work! It looks like corrective action is in full swing.  smile

Now shouldn't we brainstorm about ways to prevent this from happening again or ways to identify it immediately if it does?

I'm the farthest thing from a programming expert but I suspect it's probably impossible, or damn near, to prevent hubs from being stolen/copied even by embedding links and author's names and such. Seems like only a matter of time before someone finds a way around most such precautions, no?

If so, maybe we could attack the problem from another angle too. Maybe each of our accounts could have a HubPages-designed plagiarism checker. (Bear with me...)

For example, as soon as you hit the "publish hub" button perhaps several random lines of your text could be selected and stored in the plagiarism checker's memory. Then each hubber could run their "personalized" plagiarism checker program whenever they wanted and have it search the web for all of their stored lines of text at once. (Instead of checking one hub at a time.) That way plagiarism could be identified quickly, before any (or much) profit could be made by the thief.

Does that make sense? I'm not sure if I described my idea clearly at all... And I definitely have no idea if such a program/application/whatever-they're-called is even possible to write or install on HubPages.

Just some thoughts. Don't laugh too hard, you might crack a rib. smile

It's just the way of the internet, Sara - the same thing is constantly occurring all the time to someone, somewhere.  If there was an easy way of stopping it, sites everywhere would be implementing it.

I've been thinking about adding something to the end of my Hubs such as "This article is published on HubPages.  If you are reading it on any other site, it has been stolen" - but if I want readers to report the theft to me, how do I enable that?  If I post an email address I'll just get flooded with spam.

The other thing is that I'm going to link more within my Hubs, both to my other sites and to my other Hubs.  That way, if an article is stolen with the links preserved, I'll get some benefit.

      1. Sara Tonyn profile image60
Sara Tonynposted 15 years agoin reply to this

Yep, I know. sad  That's why I suggested creating a variation/modification of a standard plagiarism checker here at HubPages that would allow hubbers to quickly and routinely check all their hubs at one time. Being alerted to plagiarism as soon as it occurs would at least minimize any lost income.

There must be a programmer here who knows how to create a program/application like that...

Sadly it is our problem and we really have no way to protect ourselves, aside from filing complaints.  Thank goodness we have smart people on this forum who are finding these issues.

How can one person continue to get an adsence account?

I feel like going into all my hubs and putting a copy write disclaimer on it with a link to my hubpage.  I assume that will show up since he is just lifting the articles and not doing a copy paste.

it is discomforting, isn't it?? sometimes when I check my google traffic, I wonder about the sources coming from these very obscure places? I realize it's a global community, but it's such a violation to see our work lifted so easily, somehow there must be ways to prevent it.  hmm

oh well, today I'm lounging poolside with the latest dan brown book. I need a break from the computer. cool

Yeah! maybe i should take a break too. I was so stressed out yesterday, it set me back on my hubchallenge by a few hubs. Still haven't gotten over this mess, which seems to be rearing its head again. Oh what the heck!
I'll just take a break and chill a bit. sad

I clicked on the link provided and it said "profile not found". Guess DS also pulled out this one too and they did not wait anymore for us to file the complaints. hope I'm right about this.

    Thanks for the link shinujohn.

I have No Doubt That Docstoc staff would be monitoring Our Forums to see how we are reacting. They are easily able to do so. Have you considered this?

@ Jane: Having copyright notification on your work is important.
However, on perusing my hubs on this site; the copyright notice was absent on their posting.

Fellow writers I think we need to stand back and look at the big picture. this attack isn't to steal our hubs. its ment to compormise the integrity of both sites. if we stop writing hupages dies- if docstc has to put out fire after fire it dies. This is a job for the hub pages team

Then look at the Entire Big Picture (Commercially) and take the steps required to ensure Your commercial viability.

    Hi Marye....
Are you saying your works from other sites has been stolen by the same party and placed on this same site Docstoc?

May I also ask what your other site hosts have done about that situation?

I am saying that there are literally thousands of scraper sites that pick up articles and blog posts. For food writers it is a fact of life that is frustrating. We find our recipes and images everywhere without attribution..including national magazines....In the past three years one large network I work for has had to involve the corp. lawyers on the average of every other month.

If you think this is the only site that does this, or that this is an unusual occurrence you are mistaken.

It is also not the responsibility of the host to handle it. Maddie was sweet and it is great that Hubpages did handle it...but that is not the norm in most cases.

Well it looks like they are still stealing articles,as my views are down again

I have found several of mine there, thanks lrohner and all you guys (thranax!) for the info. I am filling out some complaints.
The more of us that do, perhaps the better. I know my views have dropped off sharply starting last week, in spite of publishing a dozen new hubs.

I have a question about this place, as well - I found quite a few of mine there, but it looks like they just redirect to the author...I am not sure. So then that would be a good backlink? Can someone help me with this one?

    It's called BlogCatalogue.com

It came up on Google before my hub and doesn't show any authorship except them in the link...what are they about?

I am absolutely discusted with the theft. We all on HP must ban together and get HP to put a copyright on the bottom of EVERY page. Send HP a link to all work taken and re-used. Demand they do something. This is (in my belief) why we are all having problems on here with rankings and lots of other problems. HP has been penalized for this by the big G. This is hurting us all.

Hubpages is all copyrighted. You own your work, if you say its copyrighted with your own:

      ©Queenbe 2009

It doesn't stop anyone from taking anything. The internet is that open. If you block my right click copy, I can still take a picture to own it if I want. Hubpages really is doing all it can, and the only way to defend your work is to track it (virtually imposable) in some cases.

This already exists.  You might want to read over your HubPages so that you become familiar with where it is.
