    I have few questions:

Suppose my poem and the explanation cross the word limit of 500 then will it be accepted? Suppose it reaches the word limit up to 600/700, will it be fit for the contest?

Should I submit my contest hub the way I submit the regular hubs that is should I post it through 'start a new hub' and I am confused where to mention the contest tag. Will it be beside the title of the hub or where we mention the keywords?

Will this contest entry be added to my no. of hubs or it will not be included in it?

    Expecting a reply. Thanks!

      Hi shampa,

In my understanding, as long as you write more than 500 words, your hub will be accepted for contest.
You have to submit the hubs as regular hub and one tag should be "contest" and other tags as you always do. And the hub will be added to your hubs list as always.

Overall the only change is you add "contest" in your tags section in your hub and that's all!

Simone Smithposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Rosika is right, shampa sadhya! Your poem can be as short as you like so long as the total Hub you submit is over 500 words.
And make sure that, in addition to adding the 'contest' tag you have the Hub properly categorized in the 'poems and poetry' category.
Also, make sure that you have at least one image in your Hub, and that all images you use are properly cited and legally used. I recommend checking out the contest page for full details, but that's the gist!

    Hi everyone!

Today's Daily Drawing winner is Shadesbreath for Sunrise Epiphany. Congratulations, Shadesbreath!

As a side note, I want to remind y'all to PLEASE read this guide and make sure that you properly cite your images. Nearly every day when running the Daily Drawing, I've had to disqualify at least one perfectly good entry that would have won $50 had it not failed to properly use or attribute an image. That's pretty darn frustrating for me, and I bet it would be frustrating for all those who COULD have won were they to realize the tiny bit of effort that they would have needed to expend to be able to win the prize.

So check your Hubs. Make sure you've properly used and attributed the images you've included. And refer to that guide for help.

I read on the other thread that Photo Gallery entries will only consider 'photos' and not computer generated images? Is this true?

    1. Shadesbreath profile image77
Shadesbreathposted 13 years agoin reply to this

The conversation around this certainly exposes a complicating gray area between photography and art... and one further confounded by the use in the rules of the term images.  Just goes to prove that, even on a writing site, perhaps especially on one, that language, words, ultimately really, really matter.

However, in the most technical of readings, it does say "photo gallery" as the contest category, and, strictly speaking, that could be construed as entirely clear. It probably is.

    2. Simone Smith profile image84
Simone Smithposted 13 years agoin reply to this

It definitely is a gray area. While I don't know if we would DQ a photo gallery entry for not being made with photos, I don't think it would have a shot at winning any of the judge-based prizes.

      1. shibashake profile image81
shibashakeposted 13 years agoin reply to this

It is strange to me why photos are considered to be more artistic or worthy than the other forms. Perhaps you could expand on the reasoning behind this?

Also, what about photos that are integrated with computer generated elements?

        Thanks for your response.

Today I posted my first entry for the contest but how do I come to know that it has been accepted among the contest entries?

After the posting of my regular hubs I share it with my followers as well as with Facebook and today I did the same with my contest entry hub too. Is it permitted or restricted for the contest entry?

Your reply will be of great use. Thanks in advance!

Shadesbreathposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Well, I'm not in any official capacity here, but I went and looked, and it appears you have entered it in the proper category. You have an image, you have a 'contest' tag, and you seem to have enough words to make a 500 count. So, I'd bet you are fine as far as being entered goes.

As for sharing on Facebook, yes. You can do that. Someone else asked a few days ago and contest officials (I think it was Simone) said that doing so is both allowed and encouraged. smile

      Good luck.

      (And thank you, Phyllis. Cheers!)

It seems I am full of questions.  I have been using photos of my own and tagging them as Personal Collection.  I don't put my handle or anything as to being the owner of them.  Will these photos still be tagged right?

This may sound like a silly or stupid question to many, but I would like an answer regardless.

    1. Phyllis Doyle profile image88

I would think 'Personal Collection' could be questioned. I always put, as the source: 'By: and my name'.

We count those as fine - the only thing we're really strict on is proper citation of others' images and clear indication when images are one's own if they don't appear to have been photos obviously taken by the author big_smile

gray area... I say no.  You should just list yourself as the source.  That is the proper way to tag photographs that you have taken.  Personal Collection could imply photographs from everywhere and anybody's work that you have collected throughout the dawn of time. ..

    1. profile image0
SirDentposted 13 years agoin reply to this

They have to be properly cited and legally used in order to be counted as an entry in the contest.  I have entered 16 hubs so far and it is possible none of them actually count.

      1. Phyllis Doyle profile image88
Phyllis Doyleposted 13 years agoin reply to this

SirDent, I think the qualifications will be gone over at the time of choosing the hubs for the finalists.  I remember Simone, in one post, said go back and edit if you have to. I think your hubs will count, just go in and edit them anyway so they will be properly cited at the time judges pick the best hubs. This is what I think, in my humble opinion.

    2. Simone Smith profile image84
Simone Smithposted 13 years agoin reply to this

All Hubbers are free to change their Hubs after they're published, whether they be contest entries or not. That said, we officially take 'publication' to be a formal declaration of submission in contests, so while we permit changes, we will check (and potentially disqualify for failing to meet contest requirements) entries at any time.

So the gist is this: yes, you can make changes, but it might be too late. Make sure that your Hubs are completely ready before hitting publish wink

As of this second, we have...

      630 poetry entries
      326 creative writing entries
      248 photo gallery entries

So poetry is clearly the most popular submission type!

    QUESTION:

So I'm posing this to Simone since she is an official Hubperson, but if anyone has any input that would be helpful.

In the hub I am about to publish, I have some photos that will require different types of attribution. I was wondering if it was acceptable to have an attribution section at the end of the hub rather than including the info below the picture itself. I only ask because, in my opinion, it clutters the story (my hub is a short story) and tends to distract the reader from the fictional experience. If it is possible, I would prefer to not clutter up the middle of the page with all those blue links and wordy attributions smile But, if it is necessary, I understand. Just want to make sure I do it right! If it would help, I can include the pictures again at the bottom with the attribution info.

    Any input is helpful!

    Thanks!

    1. Simone Smith profile image84
Simone Smithposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Great question, emichael! You're welcome to cite your photos at the end, so long as you do so properly smile
What some Hubbers do is make a note somewhere that photo citations will be at the end (even if it's just for the contest period) to make sure that we don't miss something and disqualify the entry, but even that is not mandatory. All we ask is that folks legally use images, so if you're talking about a Creative Commons Attribution image, for example, it should be fine so long as the photo is very clearly credited to its author.

SATURDAY: oceansnsunsets for Garden Designs that I Like and Want to Share
SUNDAY: Ania L for The Power Of Destiny - Short Story

We've got just one day shy of a week left of the contest, so make sure you get it all in! As it happens, submitting near the end of the contests is always the smartest way to go if you want a better chance of winning a Daily Drawing prize since fewer people submit each day wink

So in  the absence of fixing the bug on HP's side I guess I can forget about publishing anything new here and get back to normal NZ hours instead of NZ+PT days.. ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz

I've just finished reading the poem entries from Batch 1 - there are a lot of poems! The second batch has less entries. I look forward to reading more amazing poems. I've been moved by so many of the entries. Poetry is such an effective way to communicate the myriad of emotional states we experience. I have no idea who the winners will be, but it's exciting to be part of the process. Even if you post on the last day, the last hour, your entry could very well be the winning hub.
Entries are coming from all over the world, they're very impressive. Good luck!

      1. rebekahELLE profile image89
rebekahELLEposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Batch 1 included all eligible poetry entries from week 1 which started on Tuesday Nov. 1. A 'day' in the contest begins at 12 P.M. Pacific Time and ends at 11:59 A.M. Pacific time the next day. So week 1 technically ended at 11:59 A.M., Nov. 8. We received the first batch on Nov. 9. Believe me, they're working hard reviewing entries and putting together the weekly spread sheet. Batch 2 includes all eligible entries from week 2. There were not as many entries. Batch 3 will include eligible entries from week 3. I'm sure the other judges feel as I do, it's going to be hard to choose because there are so many excellent entries. I'll just add that I'm so proud of many of the writers here, the effort and heart put into these hubs is evident.

Thanks for letting me know.  I have seen a lot of poems entered into the contest.  Many of them are great poems also.  Simone mentioned how many in each category had been entered a few days ago.  Not sure if she updated those stats or not.

            Here are some updated numbers!

As of this moment, this is how many entries (some may not meet entry requirements and be disqualified) we've gotten so far:

            Poems and Poetry: 881
            Creative Writing: 458
            Photo Galleries: 369

            Quite a few!

Mrs. Menagerie was selected out of 121 entries today; that leaves us with a total of 1,710 contest entries! Incredible!

Congrats to Mrs. Menagerie and all of the other Daily Drawing winners. We'll be announcing the first, second, and third place winners for each category, along with the Smashwords prize, on the 3rd of December... so keep an eye out!
