I'm considering setting up a Pinterest 'group' called Best of Hubpages.

The idea is that I'll make it a collaborative group (you'd have to friend me) and everyone could add their own personal favorites to the group (check with other hubbers for permission). NO moderation required - if you like any of the articles in the group then 're-pin' it to your own personal groups.

If you are interested let me know, or 'friend me' on Pinterest. Username: simeycook

I've blocked my Hubs from being "pinned" because I use Flickr images on all my Hubs. I feel it's my responsibility to protect the photographers of those images from having their images stolen.

I only pin my own photos or photos where they have a creative commons license! or I check with the author of the article if I have permission to Pin their article....

        1. Marisa Wright profile image85
Marisa Wrightposted 12 years agoin reply to this

All the photos I use are creative commons licensed, but that requires me to credit the photographer.  If I allow it to be pinned on Pinterest, it's likely the credit won't be included when it's repinned.  That means I'm wilfully setting up a situation where the license is likely to be breached, and I'm not comfortable with that.

Besides, as I've just discovered, links on Pinterest are now "No Follow" - so if the purpose of pinning is to get backlinks, it's no longer effective.

          1. SimeyC profile image82
SimeyCposted 12 years agoin reply to this

Where it's a Creative Commons picture I am trying to add the same reference that I do on a hub - most of the pictures I use now are public domain so no reference is required! As for backlinks - I'm not using pinterest for backlinks - I'm actually trying to use the site as it was intended and sharing my content and checking out other people's content - the hope is that interested people will check out my articles. I note that I also upload pictures with no link to any article etc..

I've never been good at backlinking anyway!

            1. Marisa Wright profile image85
Marisa Wrightposted 12 years agoin reply to this

Yes, and if I was going to do that, I'd do the same.  The point is that on Pinterest, other members are encouraged to "repin" your pins - and when they do, your reference disappears.  That's why photographers are up in arms about the site, because so many members are giving away their photos without realizing it.

I do understand why people use the site, I'm just disappointed at the way Pinterest has set it up.  You do know that they also claim the right to keep AND SELL all images that are pinned?

              1. SimeyC profile image82
SimeyCposted 12 years agoin reply to this

Fair point - I'll only pin Public domain photos from now on, or my own photos.
Or I'll seek permission from the photographer.....

Agreed. I wrote a Wizz on this very topic.

Really, unless the photo is your own work, you should be pinning it directly from the source, not a link back to the source.

Its a fun site, just finished coding the share button into Xobba today. Been playing around with it for a couple of weeks now.

Before you expend huge amounts into the site for any reason other then just fun, keep in mind its similar to any bookmark site, but with even less chances of the user actually clicking through and reading (outside of the sites demo).

HP did point out that Pinterest made it to the top ten referral sites to Hubpages, so certainly a great many people ARE (at least) clicking through.

This may be helpful: http://www.searchenginejournal.com/pint … ies/36951/  (although, links have been changed to "nofollow" since that article was written)

    1. SimeyC profile image82
SimeyCposted 12 years agoin reply to this

I'm seeing decent clickthroughs on a few of my hubs already - especially where I am taking the time to connect with other non-HP users!

      1. sunforged profile image74
sunforgedposted 12 years agoin reply to this

        Define Decent?

Are your view increases accompanied by an equal increase in earnings?
(I forget sometimes that HP has an impression based program, so i suppose any view will do  smile)

shrug .. ive seen very excited marketers and writers discussing pinterest for weeks now, with near rabid time devotion , I just don't see the long term value for article writers and aff marketers. There are plenty of types of sites that it will be great for, Im not seeing the match here.

But! do take a look at what the current site demographic is - if your content fits their interests! wink

        1. SimeyC profile image82
SimeyCposted 12 years agoin reply to this

LOL well compared to my total views a day -NADA! BUt compared to my Social Site traffic - good! I'd say I got about 50 visits today - started using today - and they are 'organic' visits from people interested in the Hub! If it keeps up, and increases then I'd say it is a success - more likely to be a one-off spike for new 'pins'!

    2. Maddie Ruud profile image70
Maddie Ruudposted 12 years agoin reply to this

Recent research shows that Pinterest drives more referral traffic than either Twitter or Facebook.  (That's not on HP, that's web-wide, for the record.)

      1. sunforged profile image74
sunforgedposted 12 years agoin reply to this

        Im aware.

Its a great tool for say one of my Artist portfolio sites with products available and  related facebook group etc. Could get genuine Fans to return and interact and remember the site. Or a recipe sharing community ...

Just clicking through to a single article? Again, I forget HP uses Impression based ads, but long term value of a user who goes "ooh, look a pretty picture" not  likely to be high. Chance of commercial sales from the "ooh a pretty picture" referral not very high, Chance of adsense click ... even less likely as they probably are itching to get back to pinterest to see more pretty pictures!

        Sources for recent research?

I've been following studies and having my own fun for awhile now and I enjoy the site and don't expect it to lose popularity!, just throwing out a reality check. A referral is as good as the scope in which they arrive.

Here is detailed account of some ways to interact with Pinterest that may provide long term value:

        http://www.copyblogger.com/pinterest-marketing/

I was trying to focus on the "and reading" part, our stats will show referrals, but I know (just like google images) that when Im clicking through, Im just doing it to see a fuller sized image

Hmmm - not sure about this group now - it's likely to become a dumping ground and perhaps should be rename Articles of Hubpages.

I'd still like to have a 'Best of Hubpages' group. Here are my ideas:

-Any contest winners, Hubnuggets, hubs of the day etc could be added (with permission from relevant authors).
-Any worthy hubpages should be listed in the forum and get at least '5' agreements from other hubbers.
-Only I and members of the Hubpages team should be allowed to add to the group - or only the hubpages team....

The problem I have is that I cannot stop anyone I give permission to use the group from posting anything they want.....

    Any ideas???

    1. cardelean profile image84
cardeleanposted 12 years agoin reply to this

I like that you changed it to Articles of Hubpages because I did sort of notice the same thing.  I wonder, is HP going to create a Pinterest account?  If so, then Hubs of the day, selected (not random drawing) contest winners would be good.  That way they can identify the quality of hubs that are put on there on a "Best of" board.

Also, the category is important.  If you want the hub to reach other pinterest people they might not see it if it's just under "articles of Hubpages."  For example, if that board is categorized as education, then if a recipe is posted on the board then people following the recipe category but not necessarily this board would not find it.

So maybe there needs to be separate boards for HP articles depending on the topic.  Just a thought.  I hope that made sense.

Sort of related to the discussion...

I've been pinning stuff and not got any interest.  Hey ho, it's par for my internet marketing course.

    However...

Just had a look at my view and there's a picture of a blue bowl, sort of ornament I suppose, the typical useless crap that someone might buy to put on a mantelpiece - and it has something like 45 Likes.

So it obviously works for some things.

45 likes.  For a f**king picture of a bowl.  'scuse my French.

edit: Picture of a bag. 50 repins.  50!!! For a bag?  I'm doing something very wrong.  Perhaps I'll take a picture of my scrotum and try that.

Hello friends my username at pinterest is same - soni2006. here is the link pinterest.com/soni2006, I am not hyperlinking it as it is against the HP rules and I am following more than 50 hubbers from HP and already created a pinboard called "nice places to hangout with family and friends".  Now can you please tell me how to join your "articles of hubpages" group?

I will add you to the group tonight - doesn't work on IE7 at work!

BTW I renamed the Group - articles of Hubpages.

Hey Simey, not sure if you saw my post up a few spots in reply to your original question about changing the name of the board.  Just a couple thoughts about the boards/categories.

          I agree with your thoughts.

The biggest problem we'd have is how do we 'maintain' the boards - if someone posts into the incorrect category only they can move it.

I'm more inclined to have the main 'Articles of Hubpages' board - then if someone likes an article they should repin it to one of their own boards.

Hubpages (and/or me) should then maintain a Best of Hubpages board based on Contest winners, Hubs of the Day and Hubnuggets.....

One point though - it doesn't matter what the board is as long as you apply proper SEO techniques to the description of the picture...

Agreed.  Maybe HP will start a Pinterest account and maintain some boards with the various categories.  Thanks for setting this up!

Thanks for this idea. I tried to join pinterest through facebook and clicked writers on hubpages but it seems I've done some mistake. Kindly, let me know how to join it and how to add you as friend. I am very much interested in joining this group created by you.

I only get one or two uninspired repins every time I pin a hub. Paradigmsearch has concluded that his hubs aren't geared towards a 95% female audience. Paradigmsearch wanders away in confusion... big_smile

I'll follow you for a bit.  Compared to the crap that I'm getting from the Facebook lot that I seemed to automatically follow it can't be worse.

Sorry. To rephrase.  It isn't worse, I checked.

Sssh.  That sort of thing could go viral.

          Only joking.

At least I can guarantee you there won't be a whole lot of stuff flooding your inbox.  The occasional 'funny' or even a sales pic maybe.

Some people are putting hundreds, thousands of pictures up.  I'm stopping following people when all I can see are their sales pics.  It's like the worst kind of unsolicited garbage through your letterbox.

          In my opinion.

I agree. I repin one pic and as I check today. I got tons of emails from pinterest. So I decided to just create another email account to entertain those unwanted mails.

You can stop those emails by adjusting your settings on Pinterest.

I'm relegating pinterest to the likes of FB, twit, and tumblr. I'll throw a link or two at them every day, but that's about it.

Actually, I'm starting to perk up a little here. I'll also do follows and  followbacks, and even some repining of those folks' pins that I follow and who follow me. Twitter all over again...

I just found this excellent pic of a very dead cat. To pin? Or not to pin? That is the question.

Is it available in different colours?  Or just in time for Xmas?  Can you perhaps get a half naked woman to pose next to it?  Are there three different recipes you can make with it to feed a family of four?  Can you knit small characters for an Easter whatever from the fur? Perhaps a hat?

      I can't suss it either...

LOL I've found some nice pictures of castles and walkways to pin - and lots of recipes....

This got 17 repins and 9 likes.

I think the median age of the 95% female audience is around 12 to 18 years old. That would pretty much explain everything.

Maybe I should rename the group 'Pretty Pink Group' or 'Justin Bieber is Hot' group?
