   I was often told as a kid to "do unto others as you will have them do unto you".
   Today I may translate that to mean :"what goes around comes around" or "karma is a b*tch"; but the same basic principle applies.

    I can still hear my mother's voice, "If you don't have anything nice to say; don't say anything."  To this day I don't like gossip.
    
    And for my sister!!! "You should have done that an hour ago."
    The first time it was used we were on a car trip from Ottawa Canada to New York.  My sister had to go the bathroom.  We all broke up laughing then (come on...an hour ago!!!?) and we still use this family gem of a phrase quite often to get a laugh.

    The funniest thing my dad ever said was: "There are two kinds of stupid people in this world. Those who know that they're stupid and those who think that they're smart and they're the dangerous ones."
    
    The funny part is that he wasn't even trying to be funny when he said it and yet it makes me laugh years later.

    Don't ever give up. I still remember how my parents used to tell me how easy it is to stop trying and ruing over things but really difficult to go on and find a way out of things.

    These are pretty much the answers to all of life's tough tricks. Even though the cliché parental tone makes me chuckle these little titbits do have some value when I need to push on through something I don't want to do, although sometimes I add a bit more happiness to them like "life isn't fair but who cares? I'm happy now anyway." to put my own pizzazz into it. You have got to love parental advice !

    I remember my dad always telling me, "son, always treat a woman with respect, even if she doesn't deserve it."  Fortunately that always stuck with me.  I went through a really bad divorce a while ago and there were many times that following my dad's advice probably kept me out of jail.

    When i was younger my dad asked me to read in church. I stood up and all eyes turned to me. I was so nervous, and scared.
    "Everyone is looking at me" i whispered to my dad.
    "That's because you are beautiful" he replied. My confidence came back and since then whenever i am before an audience i tell myself the same thing.

    My dad told me " You are not allowed to date until you are 30 and married"  When I asked how I was supposed to get married he said "Don't worry about it" 
    
    On a serious note, my mom gave me two very good pieces of advice I still use:
    
    If you are mad at someone and do not tell them, you lose your right to be mad.
    
    If they will do it to other people, they will do it to you too. (meaning friends who trash talk, people who treat other people poorly, etc. )

    When we were being picky eaters we were told that we could eat our dinner "fresh and hot, or old and cold."
    
    I use that with my kids when they don't want to eat their dinners, but I know that they will ask for a snack shortly after the meal.
