      Statistically, quite the opposite.  Religious belief declines with intelligence and education.
      
      That is statistics, of course.  Nothing in that says an atheist cannot be unintelligent or that  a fervent believer cannot be brilliant.  But in any random sample, those with strong religious beliefs will have smaller numbers of brighter people.

         Well, I know the Amish people, for example, are educated to the age of 11 - if they were further educated, they would learn to think critically, and begin to question their religion etc.. But this has nothing to do with actual intelligence.

    Intelligence is vastly over rated, by the way.  It won't get you friends.  It won't necessarily make you money, won't help you to be happy..  The very brightest people are often unhappy, social misfits and do not do well financially.
    
    Studies have shown that mild intelligence - less than "genius" level  - is the best predictor of overall success and happiness.  Smart enough to gain advantage in the games of life, not so smart as to find those games ludicrous.

    The smartest humans are those who are able to survive. Intelligence is a relative term and is measured differently among different societies and cultures. I'm pretty smart by American standards, but how long would I survive in the Amazon rain forest without help?

       Don't really agree with this.  Some people survive because they have to, not because they are intelligent.  Some people survive because they steal.  Is stealing intelligent?  Some people survive by killing.  Is murder intelligent?  Granted, survival takes skills, not intelligence.

    It is to me.
    Why do some seem to exhibit problems with their self esteem and want to accuse others of being arrogant and pedantic?

But it's your call, I'm just saying this because I have nothing better to do at this moment.        I actually think TruthDebater is right to some extent, looking objectively at his first message in this thread and not at the possible double meaning that bothered you.     Those who agree with me are obviously intelligent, and most of those who do not agree with me are too inconsequential to matter.
    I have a problem with one hubber who does not agree with me but is clearly intelligent. I am working on him but he is not easy to convert. I have just not found the arguments that resonate with him. A possibility is that he is more intelligent than me.
    An alternative is that I am not as intelligent as I think I am - but if I were not intelligent I would realise it I think.
    Does the question mean intelligent or educated? There are PHDs - by definition intelligent and educated - whom I would not trust to walk a child across the road.

       Education is only a "facet" of my "macro" interpretation of "intelligence."
       We won't know if we are truly intelligent individuals until we reach our death beds.
       The human cell has a potential life span (currently) of about 170 yrs. Stresses reduce that length of time to an average of just a yr or 2 under 80. It is thought that about 1 out of every 4 Americans will now reach 100 years of life.
       My definition of intelligence is: the ability to use all of ones gained wisdom in life to live for as long as ones genetic programming will allow.
       The goal of all life is to survive. That is also an intrinsic, inherited "individual" goal.
       To live a life not dedicated to survival (and joy), to me would be the acme of ignorance.

          If the goal of all life is to survive, and that is a component of your "yardstick for intelligence" I've already beat the odds once by surviving cancer and now I use every means at my disposal (education, whole foods, etc., I will admit to a few vices however) to keep from ever going down that road again. But qwark, I really don't perceive that as particularly intelligent, just being resourceful, that's all.

             "Resourceful" is most definitely an intrinsic facet of my "holistic" definition of "intelligence"...but ONLY a facet.
             Being "resourceful" takes education and common sense. These are all facets of the wisdom gained by living. The greater the "living' experiences, the greater can be the resources used to survive.
             Again, you are a survivor who "intelligently" used those resources necessary to save your precious life.
