Super Mario Galaxy 2 Walkthrough Part 29: The Grandmaster Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is one of the most well-reviewed games in the history of gaming.  IGN gave it a 10.0, which is extremely rare for any game, especially one that is a franchise sequel and is very similar to its predecessor.

I'm not really certain what makes Super Mario Galaxy 2 work much better than its sequel, but perhaps it achieves the right level of challenge and discovery.  Every time I got a star, I could not wait to go into the next world and get another.

This is (or will be depending on when you are reading it) a complete guide of how to defeat Super Mario Galaxy 2.  Here, I will show you how to get every star, which includes all the Green Stars (obtainable after getting the initial 120 stars in parts 2-21) and the Grandmaster Level.

Many of the stars are extremely difficult to get, and require several tries before finally getting.  This is definitely a "keep at it with no short cuts scenario".

Here is a few things that you should know before beginning.  There are about six "worlds" to beat, and each one has a handful of galaxies in them.  Don't ask me why there aren't six galaxies with a handful of worlds, but I didn't write this game.  By the way, after World six is beaten, there is still on more World called World S that you need to beat.  I don't know why they didn't call it World 7.

Each Galaxy has about 2 or 3 stars.  There is a first level where you must get a Comet Medal if you want to get more stars. I discuss these in parts 2-8. Within some levels are Hidden Stars that must be obtained in hidden places within the Galaxy, and some require a message in the mail in order to even find  I will discuss these in parts 9-14.  Other Galaxies require a Prankster Comet in order to reveal the last star. I will discuss that in parts 15-22. Prankster Comets often reveal timed trials (Speed Run), ones where purple coins must be obtained (Purple Coin run), and then trials where you only have one life to lose (Daredevil Run).

You begin the game in almost a 2-D version of the game to learn basic maneuvers like picking up Star Bits, and such.  After one level, you discover StarShip Mario, and it has a lot of places where you can get lives.  Some of these places show up early in the game, some more appear later.

There is a Warp Pad at one "ear" that will take you to a Toad ship where there is a 1UP mushroom.

At this "ear", there is a pipe that will have a Luma Shop.  For 30 Star Bits, you can roll a chance cube, and for 100 coins, you have 5 chance cubes.

Also by this ear is one chance cube you can roll for free.

On the nose of Starship Mario, you can get a Yoshi egg, and then go up to this one level.  Eat all the fruit and get yourself a 1UP.

And now, here is the game guide for Super Mario Galaxy 2.
