Lol! I that hungry when I posted that!

Seriously I don't care what kind of music Michelle listens to or likes but to endorse this guy to young people at the white house is just wrong! Obviously the libs think she can do no wrong but they always sacrifice their principles when it comes to defending their position of power that's why they were all fine with Bin Laden being killed in cold blood... now if Bush had done that there would have been outrage... so of course I'm not surprised by the reaction here.

No spam in this forum topic, spam here as one hubber tried to say above is incorrect.  It is a valid topic for discussion.  (Does typing spam spam ad nauseum have the topic kicked off by hubpages? Probably so?), and I would agree that this is quite unconscionable, this rapper's inclusion.

Did someone lose track of what actually represents poetry in the USA and the world?  There are many great poets, how sad someone was displaced for a trash talking musical rapper with an indoctrinated Rev. Wright axe to grind.

So are Will Smith's but somehow he can do it with class and Common... not so much. But then I wouldn't expect anything decent from someone that sat in Rev Weights pews and described him as a man of love. Common's idea of love is clearly spelled out in his song "Hidey Hoe".

I know Lady Love probably won't watch this, but The Daily Show torched Fox News and the rest of the people barking about this Common issue on last night's show. Common comments on violence in his music while promoting peace and causes an uproar. Johnny Cash (whose music I love, by the way) sings about violence and is awarded a medal by President Bush. I resist playing the race card as much as possible, but this issue is just ridiculous.

No Johnny Cash doesn't sing about violence he sings about regret!

"Folsom Prison Blues" I hear the train a comin' It's rolling round the bend And I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when, I'm stuck in Folsom prison, and time keeps draggin' on But that train keeps a rollin' on down to San Antone.. When I was just a baby my mama told me. Son, Always be a good boy, don't ever play with guns. But I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die When I hear that whistle blowing, I hang my head and cry.. Soooey! I bet there's rich folks eating from a fancy dining car They're probably drinkin' coffee and smoking big cigars. Well I know I had it coming, I know I can't be free But those people keep a movin' And that's what tortures me... Well if they freed me from this prison, If that railroad train was mine I bet I'd move it on a little farther down the line Far from Folsom prison, that's where I want to stay And I'd let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away.....

        And then there's Common...

Comin to damage you, spittin understandable slang at you I be the all seeing lyrical, hammerhead sharp peripheral With 360 degree visual When the signal was given, MCs get biten with venom >From a poisonous algorithm liable to kill 'em My style will get in 'em, way up in 'em My face don't belong in The Source It belongs on the shroud of turan, for certain I grab mics and murder shit It's wickeder than Satan worshippers going to Catholic church services You heard of this The lyrical verbalist, trash herbalist The wrath of my cold-blooded verses is merciless Rap snap, get your ass cracked like bear traps Contaminate your air sacs like tear gas And I swear black, try to battle me, you won't last I'll turn your ass into the artist formerly known as, you gay ass fag I'll blow you to ashes with tactics Strip you naked, then make you hug a cactus, you bastard So phat to be a rap star, takin pictures at music seminars People know who you are Now I got mad shorties that wanna call me Because they saw me, up in The Source chillin on page 40 Put this in your CD-ROM www dot Canibus dot com You can find me on the internet talkin to chicks That was sweatin me off the Music Makes Me High remix I be talkin mad trash tryin to get 'em to laugh See, if I click and drag long enough, I'll get the ass Bring it

So you defend your point by giving us an example of one of Johnny Cash's songs that has little to do with violence and an example of one of Common's most controversial songs? I guess there's a good reason why Lady Love is never Lady Logic.

I could turn that around on you and show you a video clip of Common on Sesame Street talking with children vs. a clip of Johnny Cash being violent and drunk. The point is they both made mistakes in their past, but one is heralded by everyone while the other causes an uproar for being a guest at the White House. What about Ted Nugent, a man who waved a gun around on stage and announced that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton could "suck on this"? Sean Hannity wouldn't criticize him, because "Ted Nugent is my friend". If a rapper did that Hannity would have been calling for him to be arrested.

The Cash song I posted was one cited here where he says he shot a man just to watch him die. The other song cited in the Media was Claptons version of I shot the sheriff. I realize rap is a genre that generally is violent and misogynistic but not all if it and its hard to compare it to pop music maybe I can find some death metal or aryan rap... but then those artists weren't invited to the WH.

I took a shot of cocaine and I shot my woman down
I went right home and I went to bed I stuck that lovin' 44 beneath my head"

Those are lyrics from the song "Cocaine Blues" by Johnny Cash, a man who met and received praise from at least two presidents (Richard Nixon and George W. Bush are the two that I know of, he may have met others). I respect Johnny Cash's music, but it's unfair to say Cash's lyrics are social commentary while Common's are glorifying violence.

Hmmmm....George Bush and Dick Cheney heavily backed Enron executives....and successfully ensured that the Democratic governor (and potential presidential candidate at the time) Gray Davis, would be blamed for the energy crisis that was entirely Enron's b.s. creation...

But why is this far worse connection, and others like it, brushed off while some two-bit music-maker is chastized in this thread?

Misplaced priorities, misspelled words, and a misguided mind at work, as usual.

Mike, you could not be more wrong. Bush did not back Enron. When they came to him looking for a bailout he saqid NO. That was when Enron came clean about not being truthful with the books. AS they collapsed it was the begining of the dot com bust and several major corperations reported accounting errors and made adjustments

Haha, you must not have known who Bush's main campaign contributor was in 2001.  Just a few months into office, he signed an executive order substantially raising California's energy prices, nearly bankrupting the state, all the while marking new record profits for, ya you know it, ENRON.
He also created that fail environmentally raping bill, what was it....umm...oh yea, the Clean Air Act I think it is called.  It deregulated pollution standards for energy companies *cough*ENRON*cough* so that they could ''regulate themselves and come up with their own policy''.  That is like convicting a criminal then letting him choose how to sentence himself.
Obvious crime against health and pro-Corporation is obvious.
Bush raped our country, and we are still with child.

PLEASE!  I sense that people who post this sh!t are either --
A:  Jealous that no one with any artistic ability wanted to work with the former president, an obvious retard.(I use that term lightly, as I know several 'mentally challenged' people that have more sense than 'Dubya'.)
    OR
B:  Completely lack any sense, as the obvious word analogy in the sentence, ''Burn a Bush cos for peace he no push no button'', escapes their tiny brains.

Go watch more Fox News opinion shows, I need to go 'drop bombs over Iraq' while 'disgracing the Porcelain God'.

Oh by the way, there was one report written about it. Turns out many of the prisoners were felons, 1 convicted of rape, several were convicted child molesters. Keep up the good vetting that you and your admin does Obama.

It's obvious you are not familiar with this man,who was once known as Common Sense. Because he has it,he's an accomplished actor, songwriter, author and rapper.

He has many well written socially conscience songs and cds under his belt, and he's always been very positive.

    He's an awesome actor also.

Do the research before you go spewing things that are not true, here's a wiki link for you to find out about the man,so you can do better because you know better.

He uses the n-word and MF frequently in his lyrics, too. I'm not saying he doesn't have any talent, and I'm all for free speech. Can't please everyone,so he said a few unpopular things,he didn't shoot somebody in th face (Cheney),he didn't commit statutory rape(Polaski),I could go on and on with vicious acts and words of men some deem above reproach.I feel the above mention are worthless but some praise them.

Funny but I didn't see "Common's" name in the White House announcement. This event was streamed live and included students from some major universities. Barack said this in his opening remarks:

"We're here to celebrate the power of words and music to help us appreciate beauty, but also to understand pain; to inspire us to action, and to spur us on when we start to lose hope; to lift us up out of our daily existence --even if it's just for a few moments..."

"Inspire us to action"... what action? Killing cops? Burning the president? Hating gays? Disrespecting women? Those are the themes of Mr Common's work which the Obama's exposed their children to and endorsed and promoted to this nations young people. That's simply inappropriate regardless of whether you like his music or not.

The inability to see representation and symbolism as higher forms of expression is typically why people become right wing, the same applies to christian - although this seems to be mostly the same thing.

This is why you will never really understand irony, inference, etc.  This is a shame really because many books express their ideas in this way, including the bible.

The visceral response to why MO would choose a rapper is that rap resonates with Americans (especially young Americans -- who were the mainstay of BO's 2008 win). Finding evidence to back this "gut feeling" up was not as easy as I expected.
Found a couple of polls that said 47-50% of Americans listen to rap.

    Here's a nugget from billboard.biz:
Nielsen SoundScan Adds Digital Song Genre Reports; Rock Tops 2010 Digital Song Sales
    January 20, 2011

    By Andy Gensler
Nielsen SoundScan has added new Digital Song Genre Reports to its cache of services.  These reports are based on the Digital Song Genre Charts that debuted in early-2010 in a partnership with Billboard.

These reports offer a new capabilities such as  the ability to break music sales down by genre market share and detailed DMA (Designated Market Area) genre reports.  Genre designations are key understanding market trends within the music industry.

..."Some of the data the new report generated include digital song sales by genre.  In 2010, for example, the report found that
In 2010 Rock was the most popular genre with a 27% market share, followed by Pop at 25.4%, and R&B/Hip-Hop with a 21.9% share.

Also broken down is the percentage of catalog sales, with rock having much higher back catalog sales (72.4%) than the more hit-driven genre Rap (33.9%), in which the majority of sales are newer releases."

Clearly, the Obamas aren't going to reach out to Nashville for their celebrity support (as per Bushco). Still, next time Michelle has an invitation for a poet she might want to go with someone more rock n' roll or pop....

She made an "I've always hated  America' remark (consistent with her choice of church and pastor).  She should be doing everything she can to rebuild relations with white people. Instead, she invites a person to an event with a baggage of hate. It's not just stupid, it's who she is.  She  - IMO - hates America.  It would be fine with me, but it's not fine when she's in THAT house.   That house she lives in belongs to ALL of America!
