They should be careful with those pretzels, they've tried to kill presidents before. In 2001, President Bush was almost taken out by a Rold Gold while watching the Super Bowl (although I suspect it was a conspiracy involving the Russians).

  4. Mighty Mom profile image78
    Mighty Momposted 13 years ago

It doesn't take much insight to see the THEME of the Super Bowl party food. It's all about the 2 teams -- Wisconsin is known for cheese and brats and Germans and beer. Pittsburgh is why they had the HANOVERS (of PENNSYLVANIA) pretzels. I was going to ask why no Philly cheesesteaks but then caught myself -- Pittsburgh is not Philly!

Clearly this was all-American PARTY FOOD. The Obamas don't eat like this every day.

But people like LaLo, Jim and Brenda would find fault no matter what Michelle Obama served.
If she served only veggies, fruit, skim milk and lean meat you would spin it as government control of our food intake.

In short: It doesn't matter what the Obamas do or don't do, you are going to pick, pick, pick at them every day until that last day of the second term in office! Go ahead, knock yourselves out. No, really. Go bang your head against the wall some more.
Maybe it will knock some sense into at least one of you.

As I just posted on another thread, when politicians hold themselves up as standard-bearers they have to walk the walk. If they fall, they fall deeper and harder than those who don't profess to be standard-bearers.

Still, on the issue of Super Bowl Sunday, I think it's generally agreed that it's a holiday of sorts (a la Thanksgiving and Christmas) and the usual nutrition rules or guidelines are suspended. I did see some articles about "lightening up" your Super Bowl fare. I didn't even open the emails. If you're gonna splurge, splurge!

Good enough! I hereby retract my suggestion that you continue knocking your head against the wall:)!

I will say this. First Ladies seem to have a history of
selecting and championing a single cause. They become associated with that cause overand above anything else they do. And if the cause is at all controversial or ends up being collossal waste of resources and money ("Just Say NO!" comes to mind), it taints our view of the First Lady.
But it's their choice what they want to champion, I suppose.

The Just Say No campaign was a great one.
It actually called for people to take personal responsibility and make good decisions about something that's a LOT more important than french fries and tacos.
How anyone can consider that a colossal waste of money and resources is beyond me.

But I'm not privvy to all the facts.  Did she continue to engage in astrology?

I watched a documentary about Reagan the other night and it mentioned Nancy's delving into astrology some.
I think she was grasping at straws without depending on God.  But I can understand her temptation, since she was trying, I hear, to protect Ronald from future assassination attempts.  But yes she was wrong.  She was also wrong, I think, on pushing for stem cell research, something Ronald didn't agree with.
We shouldn't play God, no matter how tempting and no matter if it IS "for a good cause"....

Judging from the rampant obesity in this country, a lot of people do need someone to teach them about nutrition. How can you criticize Michelle Obama for advocating more healthful diets for children and adults. It's traditional for first ladies to lend their support for non-controversial programs as she is doing. I suspect that you would be critical of whatever she has done and however she dressed and whatever she said.

As a healthcare worker I have to wonder why you would complain about any attempts to improve the health of this country. Of course it does seem that the last thing healthcare workers want is a healthy country. Better for the bottom line for the country to remain obese isn't it lady?

Improving the health of American children is of little importance to you if it's the hated left making the improvements. That the Obama's are trying to improve the lives of millions of American children is of no concern to you is it? The problem is that it is the Obama's making the attempt. Stem cell research is another example of the ignorance on the right. Tis could and will save countless lives once the right gives up the right to decide who dies, when they die, and how much money can be stripped from them before they are dead. I usually talk with people in a specific field if I have question about that field of study. I dont understand a healthcare worker fighting healthcare reform that will improve the health of this country. You really need to ask yourself why you are willing to kill thousands of innocent children simply to protect your current level of take home pay.

In truth, the government has always been involved in school lunch programs and exercise programs.
Kids' tastes have "devolved" over the decades and schools have catered to a fast food nation of fat-and-sugar-craving children. Why were soda machines even put in schools? Why are the only choices chicken nuggets or pizza?

If you object to nutritional programs for schoolchildren, you still have the same choice you always had: pack them a lunch at home. But not all parents are able (for reasons that are nobody's business but their own) to do that.

We send our children to school to LEARN. Good eating habits are LEARNED. Physical fitness is LEARNED.

How is learning these positive habits at school in any way inappropriate?

Even if some schools do dictate what children can bring in their lunches, I would assume that these guidelines were developed with the help of a trained nutritionist. Most American parents these days think a balanced meal means eating the same amount of dessert as you had double whoppers. We send people to school to learn ways to improve our world and the morons fight for the right to agrue and ignore the experts. Fine if parents want absolute control over their childrens meals in school, let them spend 4 years studing how to make intelligent choices. Stop looking for ways to do harm in this country. It's not hard to think a matter thru before opening your mouth, honest, you really should give it a try.

What happens now Lady, do doctors freely dispense prescriptions for a bad diet and couch potato lifestyle? I was under the impression that a doctor was supposed to be trying to improve the health of his customers. Are the majority of them not already telling their customers to eat better and exercise? What kind of a doctor would this new common sense law affect? I suppose the problem could come into play with the ever popular witch doctors who preform prayer healings.

Forcing them to tell the truth could be bad for the bottom line and I am sure it would cost us some witch doctor jobs. You see, I understand your objections before you make them. You are getting to be quite predictable.

  31. Mighty Mom profile image78

    LaLo,
You can't write a prescription for healthy eating and exercise!
If you could get fitness in a pill, I'm sure many Americans would love it!
The truth is, doctors have been emphasizing preventive health care for some time now. If you smoke, they tell you to quit and offer smoking cessation classes. If you have high blood pressure they suggest lifestyle changes to bring your bp down.
If you have diabetes they emphasize nutrition management as the first line of defense.
None of this is new or the result of the healthcare bill.

Your link is to a speech by Michelle Obama. If you read it, you will see that she did not come up with these ideas in a vacuum. They are based on what she hears Americans asking for.

The great thing about America is if you want to eat Cheetos and Coke for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you have that right.
But schools do get federal funding and the government does have (and always has had) the prerogative to dictate parameters.

If you have a problem with that, send your kid to private school.

The truth is, if you read her speech, doctors are REQUIRED to write prescriptions for diet and exercise per Obamacare!! I find it amazing that you refuse to acknowlege what is clearly stated in black and white right from the horses mouth right from the White House's own web site!!

It's called "Preventive Care", rather than "have a heart attack and then we treat you" care......

One benefits patients, the other, well you know.

And, does the web-site say they will be sending an armed guard over to your house to make sure you do these things?

        Nooooo, it is a suggestion.

It's about time some entity other than the drug manufacturers had a say in healthcare. A industry that makes it's billions from selling pills has been the deciding factor in what healthcare consists of. Improving one's health reduces the need for medicine and this is unacceptable to the drug companies and you.

Doctors are required to prescribe healthy activities to their patients, there I admit it, I said it, and I agree with it. It helps the patient and that is what the doctors job is. Where is the problem here? It's not like the obese slobs in this country are going to take the advice is it. Why do you feel it is in the patients best interest to never hear that they need to eat better and get of their butts? Why is getting sound medical advice from a doctor only acceptable to you when it's a pill being precribed?

I am NOT going to keep repeating myself... sheep just follow the ones in front of them and the dogs keep them in line... they don't know where they're going nor do they care as long as there is grass to eat... unfortunately they are just being fattened up while they are led to slaughter!

What is the truth that we are distracting people from? That they had a once a year celebration and this proves they are lying about their desire to improve the health of children? Is that the piss ant truth you are still trying to press forward. I sincerely hopw that part of the 1st ladies plan is to send armed federal agents to every American home each and every thanksgiving to make sure no child eats more than one drum leg. The pumkin pie task force will really have it's hands full I'm sure. Please at least try to pretend you have a little bit of common sense.

you feel people have the right to choose to ignore their doctor and still be qualified for free medical care? It's about time you accepted that people have a little bit of responsibility not to be dumb asses. An extended warranty on an autoimoble would be voided if you poured frying grease down the intake instead of the recommended fuel. I assume you can grasp where I am going with this. You demand the right to pour sludge down your carberator and demand a mechanic fix you when the inevitable happens. You also seek the right to feed all new models the same killer menu, dont you? Is that distracting enough for you?

Let's for a minute use smoking cigarettes as an example.
For several years now doctors have been telling their patients to quit smoking.
Are they required to tell their patients this?
    My doctors are.
After every doctor visit I get a patient satisfaction survey.
It doesn't matter what kind of doctor I saw. The survey ALWAYS includes these questions:
    Do you smoke?
    Yes___No___Used to but Quit___
If you do smoke, did your doctor suggest to you during your visit that you quit?
    Yes__No.

Obviously SOMEBODY is taking the issue of smoking seriously enough to require their physicians to talk to patients about it.
I don't know what kind of consequences a doctor would incur if he/she forgot to ask about smoking. But they never do. They always ask (usually the nurse who takes your vitals).

Is this tyranny? Is it evil?
    Only to the tobacco companies....

Smoking has profound effects on health... every doctor requires your health history in order to make an accurate diagnosis its NOT required by law... its just good doctoring!

Let me approach this another way. A way that will resonate better with you, LaLo.

The insurance companies who underwrite health care coverage charge a higher premium for people who engage in unhealthy habits. This includes having an unhealthy BMI. They even deny coverage to people based on their weight-to-height ratio.

Now, if I lose weight I reduce my actuarial risk of developing obesity-related diseases. As a lower risk patient, I get to pay a lower premium for my healthcare.

So this "Obamacare law" that you cite is actually a financial plus for me. It is also a financial plus for the entire healthcare system.
Even if my insurance company doesn't reward me with lower premiums, they reward themselves. I continue to pay my premiums in but lower my consumption of healthcare and thus the claims the insurance company pays. So the insurance companies are making more money on me if I am healthy.

How could this be bad for ANYONE???

Absolutely smoking has profound effects on health. We now know how deadly smoking is (for decades the effects were not widely known, although I'm sure Phillip Morris et al knew of them all along).

We now know the profound effects on health of a sedentary lifestyle coupled with fast food, prepackaged food, too much sugar, etc.
Your weight, blood pressure and (often) lab results of blood tests are all part of your health history, too.
It's good doctoring to warn patients of the health consequences of ALL unhealthy habits.

BTW, many doctors are used to providing care and prescribing based on "protocols" set by entities other than themselves.

Should a clean and sober alcoholic serve beer at a SuperBowl party because that's also customary?

Or would that be a bad idea?

Michelle should be walking the walk if she's going to talk the talk.  No matter what.

Why not? But he shouldn't drink it. A good host tries to please his guests.

It would be a bad idea only if the alcoholic thought he might succumb to the temptation to drink some beer himself.

A clean/sober alcoholic host puts the comfort of his/her guests first, as do "normie" hosts. Most do not allow alcohol in their homes, but some do.
But neither Michelle nor Barack Obama is obese.
They chose their Super Bowl menu to make their guests comfortable. Just like SB partygivers everywhere.

In fairness to the Reagan administration? You mean Reagan's Congress that cut $1 billion from the school lunch funding program? Those cuts forced the USDA to "creatively" revise its guidelines.

The real point of the article is that Michelle Obama's school nutrition program is hardly the first time the federal government has mandated what schools feed their students.

My reply was in reference to the tomato issue, specifically. You're preaching to the choir, MM. I know all about school lunches, and I support children's having a choice of a fresh green salad. I started a forum applauding the First Lady's proposal, if you remember.

Part of what the Reagan Ad. was addressing was "plate waste." School lunchrooms are notorious for wasting food. I've seen it firsthand, and it's really a shame. They can't give the leftovers to homeless shelters, or even to animal shelters. They throw away perfectly good food every day - food that hasn't been served, which doesn't even include plate waste.

    Oh Lordy, Habee!
I know you are (or were?) on the school frontlines.
I have no doubt about the "plate waste" issue, but now that it's been raised here, I just know "they" are going to come down and start screaming about government waste (as if we haven't already had enough on government "waist" and government "butts" in the last few days smile.

I've given up on getting an intelligent response from her MM. She refuses to support her claims and doesnt even read her own links. When offered her the chance to prove any one of 50 arguements I offered on the hub I wrote to dispute her rediculous post here, neither her or her trained parrot Jim accepted the chance to prove me wrong. Every time she feels cornered and that she might have prove even one of her claims, she tucks her tail and hides behind a subject change or meaningless distraction. It seems to work, It always distracts her from the responsibility of having a friggin clue about what falls out of her mouth. Problem is as we have discovered recently, she doesn't believe in her opinions enough to publish them as a blog on her goody two shoes Page, Lady only offers her opinion when it cant be traced back to her.

To answer your obsevation, I am in great mood, I just decided trhere is no reason to show any type of respect to an ignoramous that doesn't deserve it. Just in case you haven't figured out who I am talking about Lady, it's you.
