I know that there has been plenty of discussion (and Hubs, by Darkside, Jimmythejock, Hovalis, and others) comparing HubPages to Squidoo, a similar Web service.
We recently signed up with Quantcast, a service that tracks and makes publicly available, sites' traffic figures. Although we've only recently installed Quantcast on HubPages, so month's worth of data is not yet available, preliminary data is already available, as it is for Squidoo, so we thought we'd point you in the direction of what we've found. Especially since it makes HubPages look particularly good.
Monthly unique visitors - snapshot Monday 3/24/08
HubPages - 6,366,080 - this is a bit behind what our Google Analytics numbers tell us, but there might be some catching up to do on Quantcast's end
Squidoo - 6,580,314
Pieces of content - Hubs and lenses
HubPages - 94,801 Hubs
Squidoo - 450,000 lenses (at least according to the official lens)
Traffic per Hub/lens
HubPages - 67 visitors/Hub/month
Squidoo - 15 visitors/lens/month
That's right - HubPages gets over 4 times the traffic per page of content than Squidoo. That's pretty major, especially considering that our traffic does not contain porn or other pieces of content that AdSense doesn't allow, while Squidoo does allow that. (We know from our own experience that porn attracts a lot of traffic, but generates little/no income.) Combined with YieldBuild, an ad optimization and management service that maximizes each Hub's revenue, we believe HubPages has the best platform for writers to earn money on their online writing.
Why? We believe that maintaining strict, high standards for quality - not allowing overly promotional, spammy, content, and rewarding unique, original writing, has resulted in much higher average quality on HubPages than Squidoo.
We would like to thank you, the Hubbers, for publishing great-quality Hubs, and for flagging Hubs that don't meet our community's standards. Kudos to all of you!
This is interesting info. Thanks for sharing this. Will you be providing updated info as time goes on?
Lets hear it for Hubpages...A classy place to belong to. Jason that is just great information. It also lets you know that sticking to the high standards you've set is the right way to go.
Thank you Hub team for doing such a fine job. regards Zsuzsy
You guys rule with an iron like grip. Which makes for slow growth. But it also makes for strong growth.
By keeping things neat and tidy as a matter of course, it means a visitor has a far higher chance of landing on a page that is original and high in quality.
I'm a big fan of both.
At least until either one of you guys give me a job ![]()
Jason,
This is great news, although I am not surprised given the quality of content here on HP. I am curious, too, because isn't Squidoo a lot older than HP? If so, then as these numbers are compared by the age of the site, HP, seriously rules! Wouldn't it stand to reason that if Squidoo has been around longer and has created a lot more publicity than HP, then their numbers should be like MEGA far ahead of HP? Just imagine how fast HP will blow them out of the water as they get more and more publicity!

Kudos to HubPages! I know next to nothing about Squidoo, but I do know that Hubpages runs a tight ship. Quality is the key, and Hubpages has it. Congratulations.
Hey guys, do I look surprised lol, no not really, I have always believed that hubpages would make it to the top and it is no surprise to me that hubpages is getting more popular, great going guys, more success is coming your way, I feel it in the water...........jimmy

Exactly. The tighter the ship we run, the more authority our site has, and the more chance of any given visitor sticking around.
Cool. I've definitely noticed more traffic on hubs as similar lenses. I will admit that I like HubPages better. I love the simplicity and the more quality design. I like the tight ship, as it promotes better hubs versus some of the slackness I've seen at Squidoo.
Congratulations to HubPages and all Hubbers for maintaining the integrity that HubPages is building as a terrific foundation and one which a great reputation is being established for developing quality Hubs, writers, information, opportunity, etc...
HP you rock!
Keep the stats coming. I am learning to love seeing them... because of what they speak.
I am honored to write here on HubPages, as I know many others are too:-)

Ditto Whitney!
Quality versus quantity:-)

A Google search for sites within Squidoo for sites with the word Squidoo (that's all the lenses and all the faq/maintenance/profile/etc. pages) yields "Results 1 - 10 of about 676,000 from www.squidoo.com for squidoo" So it seems like 450,000 is a fair estimate of how many lenses exist.
It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one who can't draw traffic on a Squidoo lens. I've been having way better results at Hubpages too.
Bottom line: Really great news! Thanks for the great report! I knew I did the right thing in January signing up for HP! ![]()
I recently joined Squidoo to see what the fuss was about. In short, I was disappointed. For some reason, it doesn't seem to like my computer, and the site operates very slowly. There also seems to be no sense of community there, which may account for the lower number of visits.
Most of my visits actually come from other hub members, which is why I'm almost afraid to take the leap of moving it all to my website. I appreciate the community aspect of HubPages, and even though I don't get to participate as much as I'd like, I feel like this is one of my home bases on the web. I do not feel that way at Squidoo.
On the other side, I like Squidoo's editing features more, but since my stuff is more content related, HubPages works fine.
I love the intelligent writing and discussions here on Hubpages. Good quality writing is the most important thing.
Great job everyone! We rock!
Thanks to HP headquarters for providing the format and keeping the standard high. ![]()
wow these are really great stats for the hubpages community beating so many competitor sites out there in such a short span of 2 years ...![]()
I gotta say, Hubpages is doing something (a lot of things) right, obviously. In the time I've been a member here the Alexa ranking (which I can see thanks to an addon in Firefox down at the lower right hand corner of my browser window) has shot up 700 points or so. Right now it's sitting at 1825! That's pretty darn hot. ![]()
I joined both at the same time, I have 42 hubs and 1 lens. I love HubPages.

I love both hubpages and squidoo....I have accounts in both of them..
