Have you started earning yet with the news Amazon program here on Hubpages? What is your take about it?

I tried using it but could not make even a single cent. I preferred eBay before it was changed. I earn nothing from eBay nowadays.

I used to earn a little from eBay, but gave it up when the made the change and removed all the eBay capsules.  If they won't pay me for sending them customers I won't send them.

      Hi Patkay,

You've had over 100K visitors to your Hubs, so you are definitely getting traffic.  I looked at your most recent Hubs and didn't see Amazon ads.  Why not?????????

At the very least, you should be able to find a book that relates to the topics you are writing about here.

Unless you are writing a Hub about a specific product, the real key to Amazon sales here is just getting the visitor to the Amazon site.  Amazon will take care of the rest by showing the visitor products he has looked at recently, etc.  Most of my sales from Hubs are for products I am not featuring.

Amazon sales represent a significant portion of my income from Hubs, so I would encourage you to find a few Amazon products to put on your Hubs.

@Writer Fox thanks for the helpful reply. Yes I have to admit that I have not put amazon ads on my hubs. This is mostly because early on I was using eBay. With eBay's disappointments, I have not concentrated on Amazon. I will take your challenge and add more Amazon capsules then I cross my fingers and wait.

The main problem I have is that I do not have strong enough products for sale. You have said I can also put Amazon books?

I've been an Amazon affiliate for many years and averaging about 1 sale every day from my HP Amazon capsules. I switched to the HP Amazon Earning Program a week ago and already have six sales. So my average of one a day is intact, as I expected. The difference is that I now am paid at the 8.5% tier level. When I was on my own I was only in the 6% tier.

There's a bigger advantage, however. Prior to switching I always had to log into my amazon affiliate account to see my reports. I didn't always keep up with that, which is really important from a business standpoint.  But now the reports are right here on HubPages, so I don't miss a thing.  I see how many sales I have as they happen, and I see the actual items sold when they are shipped. By having that information more readily available, I am already noticing changes I can make to improve my Amazon sales.

Are you using your Amazon account on any other site?   If not, then when you switch, you will stop earning on your old account and you will be unable to collect the money that is sitting there. So you should delay joining until you have reached the threshold.

Definitely don't switch to the HP program until you meet the minimum payout on your Amazon account.  You could try adjusting/adding Amazon capsules to help increase sales and speed up the process.

You could switch your payout method to gift certificates, then the threshold is only $10 - but it means the only way to get the money is to order something from Amazon.

Okay, So I just checked a few of you hubs. I specifically selected a few titles that I thought were conducive to having Amazon ads. I'm having trouble finding any that have Amazon capsules. But I have to admit that I didn't check everything. I did find one that had an obscure Amazon ad at the very bottom. It's the one with men's hats.

You might do better if you put the Amazon capsule right next to some text where you are discussing that item. By the time people get to the end of an article, assuming they get that far, they might not look any further, and they may miss an ad placed at the bottom. That's been my experience.

          1. Glenn Stok profile image68
Glenn Stokposted 11 years agoin reply to this

Too many to mention. Just go through your hubs and select each one where you talk about items that are available through Amazon.

For example, your hub on St John's Wort Tea Recipe. Guess what? Amazon sells Yogi St. John's Wort Tea. Place that next to were you talk about it. Right justify the capsule so the image of the tea is enlarged. And.the text capsule to the left should have the section where you discuss how you use it yourself. Buy it before you do this so you have something real and personal to say about your own experience.

You have another hub on Lapidary Rocks. Amazon has a lot of items related to those.

Do you know to add Amazon Affiliate Link to Hub post. I tried yesterday to but didn't know how to. I clicked the Amazon icon in the post, typed the ISBN but nothing appeared to preview. Is it because I haven't had Google Adsense Account so my Amazon program in Hub is not activated?
Besides, what if you do if you can't find your products in Amazon?

      1. wilderness profile image76
wildernessposted 11 years agoin reply to this

Try again with a different product.  For some reason, not all Amazon products will show up in the capsules here - when they don't just find another one if possible.

You can also input the URL instead of the ISBN, but it seldom helps any.

I confess I'm a bit confused by the stats as I've never paid much attention to Amazon reports (not a big Amazon user).

I'm showing $155 of orders but no earnings.  Is that because they won't show up till the goods are shipped?

Yup that's how it works. If the items are returned you don't get paid either. So at times you may see a reduction a few days later. Never happened to me personally, but you can expect that.

I know some do really, really well with Amazon so I can't complain about it but...well I guess I am but only because I'm not having success with it.

    2. Marisa Wright profile image87
Marisa Wrightposted 11 years agoin reply to this

I took a look at a couple of your Hubs and yes, you've definitely got the right idea about ad placement.

I think you have two problems.

One is that your products are low value items which people can easily pick up in the hardware store, so they're less likely to bother to order from Amazon.

The other problem that you don't have enough ads.   People won't click every time they look at an ad, so only a percentage of impressions will get clicks, and only a percentage of clicks will result in sales.  So if you have only a few ads, you'll make even fewer sales.

That's not to say you should try to shoehorn more ads into your Hubs - that won't work.  Amazon ads don't sell unless the products are really useful to the reader, so if there isn't an obvious product to offer, don't bother!

My advice would be - don't worry about it.  Most Hubbers make most of their income from HP Ads - Amazon and eBay are just a bonus.  The people who do really well with Amazon or doing product reviews or book reviews, or other subjects where they can recommend multiple products (describing a craft project or a garden project, for instance, where several different items are needed to complete the project).

      1. Cre8tor profile image77
Cre8torposted 11 years agoin reply to this

Thanks Marisa. That makes a lot of sense about the ads I'm using being to easy to grab at the store and I'm sure you're right about the worry too. Thanks again though for checking that out for me. Much appreciated!

    1. Writer Fox profile image50
Writer Foxposted 11 years agoin reply to this

February earnings are paid in April on Amazon.  If you have defined your minimum check threshold as $100, you can change to the HP Amazon program at anytime (if that is what you want to do) after you have reached that threshold and you will still be paid by Amazon.  If you set your threshold higher than that, you must submit a change to Amazon by the first day of the payment month to be effective.  For instance, if your payment threshold is set at $1,000 now and you want to change it to $100, you must change it by March 1st for it to be effective for January earnings which are paid in March.

If you don't own or use other websites in conjunction with your Amazon account, you will never be paid by Amazon if you make the switch to the HP Amazon program before you have reached the threshold there.  In other words, make the change (if that is what you want to do) when you have reached the Amazon threshold, not when you receive the payment.

HubPages does not put Amazon ads on your hubs, you do. You can pick and choose the items you wish to display. If you are already an Amazon affiliate you have a choice of either continuing to use that affiliate ID or sign up under the HubPages earnings program and use the new Amazon ID.  You can even switch back if you want to give it a try first.

I am thinking of making the switch effective from the 1st of March. I would like to hear the reviews from people who have already made the switch before I do that.

As far as I can see, using the HubPages ID for Amazon should be beneficial to me because
    1) I can get paid at 8.5% tier level (my normal being 7% only including sales from other sources)
    2) I receive Amazon Payment by dollar check. It takes 21 working days to get the money into my Bank account. With HubPages Ad Program, I can get paid much faster.

It does mean you won't ever be able to cash out what's sitting at Amazon, but if it's only a few dollars, what's the loss?

Rocket surgeon that I am, I just realized that I can always turn off the Amazon portion of the HP ads program and see what kind of daily clicks Amazon reports.

347 clicks for me since I signed up, 2 items bought. I don't think I had a conversion rate this bad……….ever. This month, before I signed up I had 400+ clicks and sold 20 items. Something is a bit funny!

wildernessposted 11 years agoin reply to this

I don't have near the clicks or purchases (about 1/4th), but am running at your old conversion rate for the past week, since I changed to the HP program.  Which is pretty much what I've always done, except the payout is up 40% because of the higher tier.

Did anyone get in at the first of the month, and if so how long did it take to get to the 8.5% tier?

          1. aa lite profile image88
aa liteposted 11 years agoin reply to this

I don't think the program was available at the beginning of the month. I switched as soon as I saw it, I think on the 12th or the 13th, and I'm on HP a lot, so I don't think I missed it.

I'm assuming that our sales are combined with those of HP's share of sales on all hubs (at least I hope so). If so we should reach the 8.5% tier (or at least the 8% tier) very quickly, even if not that many hubbers join in.

I'm going to wait till the middle of next month before I really start moaning about the dreadful conversion rate I'm having now.

            1. wilderness profile image76
wildernessposted 11 years agoin reply to this

I would expect the tier to rise very rapidly as well.  Especially to the 6% level, which is where I nearly always am anyway - that should happen the first day, so no loss at all.

I hope your conversion rate improves for you.  If mine is any guide, you're just in a statistical anomaly and should come out soon.  Someone else had asked if anyone had any sales not from links, and I've already had those, too.  They click through but then buy something else entirely - in my case it was a garden hose and a tool I had not advertised.

This is something that concerns me - if I switch to the HP program (I did) will Amazon then want to cancel my account in a few months?

      1. IzzyM profile image74
IzzyMposted 11 years agoin reply to this

        That is a worry, Wilderness.

I started a few domains, but I've never got back to finish them, nor have time to keep them updated, so I don't get a lot of Amazon sales from them. But I did hope to!

I never reached that exalted position where my Amazon sales here on HP were here to ensure I reached a higher conversion rate thanks to many sales elsewhere.

The vast majority of my sales are still through HP.

I just reached my minimum payout last month ($1000 - but hey that took a year!)) and so happily switched to then HP version where I am seeing 8.5% referral rates, instead of my usual 6.5%.

When the HP program became available I switched my main account over right away, and switched the others over when I reached 6%. Sales had been really slow this month, perhaps the slowest ever.

I see someone said Amazon had changed their terms and conditions for sales. What change did they make? Was it this month?

        1. wilderness profile image76
wildernessposted 11 years agoin reply to this

There has been conversing about Amazon now requiring that an account see some sales.  I don't know how many, just that it will be close if there is no activity.

Hopefully, HP has already dotted the i's and crossed the t's here, but if I get such a notice I'll simply cancel out of the HP program for a month and reinstate it.  At least that's the plan for now.

I switched the same as you did - when I reached 6%.  Turned out it was with an extra couple of sales and double the minimum, but that's OK - I didn't lose much more than a couple of dollars by waiting.

The 90 day rule applies only to brand new Amazon affiliates, not to established ones.  The rule is actually that you have to make a sale within 90 days of sign-up

If you haven't sold anything, then presumably you don't have a balance, so you may as well switch over to the HubPages program now - that way you can stop worrying.

        1. Marisa Wright profile image87
Marisa Wrightposted 11 years agoin reply to this

She does have an active Amazon account.   She is worried that it might be cancelled if she doesn't make a sale within the 90 days - so I'm saying, switch now before that happens.

Besides, I didn't think an individual Amazon account was a prerequisite for the HubPages version - I can't see any mention of that.

I was wondering about that.  The Learning Center doesn't say so in so many words - it just says that it's up to individual Hubbers to decide whether it's legal for them to join or not.

I believe that legally HP is the affiliate, not the hubber.  That HP chooses to pay us 60% of the earnings does not make us an affiliate; HP retains that status.

Amazon sales are hard to score. If your hub is not related to some products which you are actively promoting, it is almost impossible to get a sale.

I suppose that all depends on the way you relate your article to the ad. What works for you is what's important.

With keywords, I have been hit with surprises in the past - discovering items were shown that I would not have wanted to list, or that didn't go well with the article. So I like to specify items by ASIN rather than keyword. I feel I have more control over what's listed in the ad. And in most cases, I place the capsule right next to where I talk about the product.

It works for me. I have nine sales since I switched to HP Amazon 12 days ago. Roughly the same as I was getting from Amazon before the switch.

        1. Marisa Wright profile image87
Marisa Wrightposted 11 years agoin reply to this

I've been updating a few Hubs to switch from eBay to Amazon, and I've started using keywords instead of ASIN.

The reason is I discovered several Hubs which were not displaying products, even though the ASIN was correct and the product still live. Usually the message was "Amazon is not providing a price for this item".   When I swapped to keywords, the product displayed perfectly.   I use very specific keywords so I get that exact product.

          1. Glenn Stok profile image68
Glenn Stokposted 11 years agoin reply to this

I've had that happen too, where it says "Amazon is not providing a price for this item" and I think it has something to do with Kindle Books that the author decided to offer free for a while to promote the product and get reviews.  Where those ads for Kindle Books in your case?

            1. Marisa Wright profile image87
Marisa Wrightposted 11 years agoin reply to this

No they were not, that's what's so perplexing.  I believe the Kindle situation is a known issue.  My products were DVD's, a body stocking (a dance one not the saucy kind!), and a tutu.

              1. Glenn Stok profile image68
Glenn Stokposted 11 years agoin reply to this

That's interesting that you had the same problem (not providing a price for this item) with those other items. I'm curious, when you used the keyword instead of the actual ASIN code, did you get it to display the same items, but with the price? Or did it display alternate items? This might be a clue to indicate if the problem is related to the item itself, or related to the method of selection.

Before joining this month I had a conversion rate of 4.5% and had 20 sales, with about the same number of clicks.

My report shows "pending" for every day in March so far. As of Feb 28 I had two sales that still don't show as shipped. So it looks like HubPages hasn't received any data files from Amazon since February ended. Must be an issue with going into a new month. I guess we can expect some hiccups since this is new. I trust that HP is working on the issues with Amazon.

Update!  I just got my second Amazon sale.  The item cost $14.99 and I made $0.60.  My first sale was on 2/26 and my second on 3/2.  I went from zero in the past two years to two in five days.  It would be great if that would keep going, but for now, I'll chalk it up to coincidence.  I'm going to keep an open mind.

What I have done differently lately is to put much more thought into what I am selling one each hub.  I used to try selling mostly books.  Then I branched out and have seen one eBay sale and two Amazon sales.  I think it does pay off to taylor the items we sell to the hub we've written.  The visitors came to that hub for a reason.  They have an interest in the subject.  Therefore the item to be sold needs to be related.  I know that is pretty elementary, but it has helped me some.
