What is the saddest song that you know?
We are not so good at identifying our own emotions. It is said that 36% of the people cannot recognize their emotions when they happen. Of course, the higher the intensity of the emotion, the higher is the recognition rate. Can you select three sad songs that range sad, sadder, the saddest? In your own opinion, of course.
From sad to saddest: "To Where You Are" by Josh Groban (inspirational, yet sad), "Broken Vow" by Josh Groban, and "What Hurts The Most" by Rascal Flatts.
Thank you, it really helps to see the different perspective. I really liked "Broken Vow". In my own search, I have not come across (yet!) a sadder song than "Caruso" sang by Lara Fabian.
It has to be "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" by Deathcab for Cutie. Gets me in floods every single time.
Hallelujah
There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
Mothers of the Disappeared
Running to Stand Still
and the old Simon and Garfunkel Silent Night/7:00 News
"Don't Follow" by Alice in Chains. Song gives me chills everytime and takes me to a place of emotions I forget I have sometimes
Honey by Bobby Goldsboro It's old, I know but it is the saddest song I have heard. Here is the you tube: http://youtu.be/59BZxgohr9g
Thank you, I really liked this song. I did not find it very sad, on the scale of 1 to 20 (the number of sub-emotions that sadness includes), I'd put it on the 4th place - Blue. Even the sad "Heartbroken" only stands on 12th place, Depressed on 20.
Red Army Blues (The Waterboys) sad song based on truth.
Seasons In The Sun (Terry Jacks, adaptation of Le Moribond by Jack Brel) sadder song.
I am a poor little beggar boy
My mother she is dead
My farther is a drunkard
And will not buy me bread
I peep out through the window
To hear the trumpet sound
And there's my poor old mother
Dead and in the ground
Father, father, dig my grave
Dig it broad and narrow
Put some roses round me
And let me sleep for ever
I have no idea what it is called or even if it is really a song but my father used to sing it to me when I was a child, why, I don't know but it is the saddest song I have ever heard.
Red Army Blues The Waterboys with lyrics, very powerful.

Seasons In The Sun Terry Jacks with lyrics, not so sad now.

I agree with you, Lara Fabian's Caruso is pretty amazing, but I love her Adagio a lot as well, she is so unbelievably talented. I am almost jealous :-D
Besides that, Les Miserable has a few amazing sad songs: I dreamed a dream; On my own.
Suzanne Vega's The Queen and The Soldier is pretty sad and haunting, in a different way.....
xoxo
Adagio is an amazing song and the gift of Fabian is not only her voice but the emotion she can put in her singing, but I think Caruso is sadder because it conveys grief over irreplaceable loss, Adagio has hope, certainty that s/he exists in the world
I get sad and cry every time I hear a Rod Stewart song and realize that some people actually enjoy him.
That's hard to narrow down the list can go on and on. Here are some off the top of my head.
Sad Rock Songs
Ny Batteri by Sigur Ros
Nude by Radiohead
Yesterday by The Beatles
Imagine by John Lennon
Sad Jazz
Strange Fruit - Billie Holiday
Sad Classical
Tchaikovsky - Symphony 6
Mahler - Symphony 5 (movement 4)
Barber - Adagio For Strings
Definitely the saddest song ever and there is no doubt about this...
' GLOOMY SUNDAY'
I appreciate every contribution. "Gloomy Sunday" is sad, but still aesthetically sad.
'Strange Fruit'... Sad, and in this climate of man's intolerance to man, frighteningly prophetic.
Also Roberto Alagna singing 'Source délicieuse' from Polyeucte by Gounod. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3dTJLr8tgE
"He Stopped Lovin' Her Today"
"Rubee, Don't Take Your Love to Town"
"Tears in Heaven"
Whiskey Lullaby is an incredibly sad song by Allison Krauss and Brad Paisley. I also think "He stopped loving her Today" ranks up there as well.
I always thought Ghost in this House covered by Alison Krauss was the saddest song ever (written by Hugh Prestwood)
Sad: "En el muelle de Dan Blas" by Mana
Sadder: "Goodbye" by Tracy Chapman
Saddest: "Colby's Song" by Joshua James
"Jesse" by Roberta Flack. A real heartwrencher.

If you know hindi language then I would recommend you the song " tujhe bhula diya" from the movie "anjaana anjaani" This is the most sad songs I have ever heard. Do hear it!
Thank you for your suggestion. It's a beautiful song, but without understanding lyrics, I can't hear more than a light sadness. I am not an expert in Hindu songs, there is one that is clearly sad without words - "Roshni Se" from "Asoka".
Talking about Bollywood films and Hindi songs, I have two more really sad songs.
E Ajnabi from ‘Dil se...’
and
Tanhayee from ‘Dil Chahta Hai’
A challenge. Listen to them without having a frisson of sadness, whether you understand Hindi or not.
There really are so many but in no particular order there is: Tony Rich - Nobody Knows It But Me, Toni Braxton - Another Sad Love Song and Sugarland - Stay.
I think the song that Eric Carmen recorded in the 1970's called "All By Myself" is the saddest song I have ever heard in my life. Barbra Streisand's song " The Way We Were" is sadder. The song by the Righteous Brothers called "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" to me is a sad song.
tears in heaven by eric clapton. Song based on truth after his baby died
Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin

The saddest songs are usually found in the Country music side of the music genres. The two that came to mind immediately were:
The Baby - by Blake Sheldon and The House That Built Me by Miranda Lambert if these songs don't bring a tear to your eye you have no feelings.
"Fake Plastic Trees" by Radiohead, "She's Leaving Home" by the Beatles, "A Bad Goodbye" by Clint Black and I think Winona Judd, "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" by Don Henley, and "Harvest Moon" by Neil Young.
I just posted this as my current favourite, but it's also very sad. I'm posting a link because it's not that well-known, yet.
Janiva Magness singing I Won't Cry
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACQyQlaT … n&NR=1
The saddest song I have heard is 'What hurts the most' by Rascal Flatts.
Hi kallini2010 '
The song that I think a very sad song is Stairway to Heaven by Erick Clapton.
There are many, but I guess Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On will always be #1 for me.
"Hurt" by Christina Aguilara and "Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap both have really sad meanings
Only one comes to mind at this moment:
Alone Again Naturally - by Gilbert O'Sullivan...
(last verse especially)
...Looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start
With a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
This was a song I heard lots when I was young but never really took in the words, very sad the ones you have posted I will have to listen to this song again but listen this time, not just hear, thanks.
Yep...this would be my second pick along with "Cat's in the Cradle".
When I Finally Fall & ...I'm Not Who I Was (tis situational,I suppose).....mabe ck in hourly... ...no?
He Stopped Loving Her Today (2 mins. later) I Need A Miracle
All Things Possible...Mercies In Disguise...The Hurt And The Hero"s Collide...I Can Only Imagine...Be Still There Is A Healer...Jesus Bring The Rain...Somewhere Over The Rainbow...Cause' Your Daddy's Little Girl...Jesus, Friend of Sinners...All Thing
I remember my parents listening to a song about a little crippled boy and truckers. The song was called Teddy Bear by Red Sovine. It was a gut puncher, kick you while you are down sad song.
As it's getting near Burns night, I'd mention 'Ae fond kiss' as a sad song -
'Ae fond kiss and then we sever - ae fond kiss and then forever'
In Scotland one song in particular is associated with funerals, so much so it has been adopted by the military of other countries, so 'The Flowers of the Forest' would be another suggestion.
The song that always makes me cry is 'We Have All the Time in the World.' I don't know if it is meant to be a sad song, but it plays an important part in the James Bond film 'On Her Majesties Secret Service.' It always reminds me that life is short, and of all the things I didn't say or do, and now can't.
Whiskey Lullaby (Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss) is one of my favorite sad songs.
"Skinny love" is pretty depressing.
As well as "Alone" by Heart.
And probably few more I can' t think of right now.
The only song that actually makes me cry when I listen to it is Breathe Me by Sia.
Saddest - Jeff Buckley "Hallelujah"
Sadder - Joni Mitchelle "The Last Time I Saw Richard"
Sad - The Kills "Last Goodbye"
I am writing the first six lines of the songs which I think the saddest song that I know.
I am a poor little beggar boy
My mother she is dead
My farther is a drunkard
And will not buy me bread
I peep out through the window
To hear the trumpet sound
Dust In the Wind by Kansas. My goodness you don't want to listen after just losing someone!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tH2w6Oxx0kQ
The way I loved you by Taylor Swift is the most saddest song I have heard also White Horse is good.
numb by linkin park
may be enrique
rabba form salame ishk movie
Coldplay's "In My Place" is pretty depressing. So is "Princess of China" and Linda Ronstadt's "Long Long Time."
Funeral For a Friend - Elton John
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAhpIjazFN0
There are many sad songs but this list below reflects only what comes to my mind at this moment:
My Immortal by evanescence
Frozen,Fire And Ice by within temptation
Snuff by slipknot
Shards of Love by Woods of YPrES
dear agony, breaking benjamin
The ones which make me feel unutterably sad are:
"Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town"
Then Dolly Parton singing Jolene......"Please don't take him just because you can" (but then my b.f. at the time said he thought she was being totally wet and wimpy, and didn't see it as sad at all)
And finally Dionne Warwick singing "Walk on By" - I was a bit sad and lonely myself when it was popular so it reflected a period in my life
"Christmas Shoes" by Newsong. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS4_b2LbLW4
I don't like hearing, All by myself or worse than that Solitaire. ... The only game in town!

The saddest movie that I have ever seen was Terms of Endearment (1983) with Debra Winger and Shirley Maclaine. The saddest part of the movie is when Emma (Debra Winger) is diagnosed with a malignant tumor in her breast and she fights to the bitter end.A poignant part in the film is when Emma goes...
