i searched for an answer to this too.  yes, sleep paralysis is similar but not the same if you understand what i mean, and if you are truely experiencing this then you know what i mean.  it is something that is actually happening.  it is also something that you can take control of.  i learned to bring this on myself and to come out of it.  Have you ever heard of astral projection?  the realms that the mind can reach is amazing.  if harnessed, the power of the mind can lead you to so many places and possiblities.  it's not crazy.  it's inspiring.

I accept rest loss of motion is likely the offender. All I know is those dreams could be somewhat unnerving. For a year, I use to have this dream that somebody malice and dull was shaking my bunk attempting to get to me. It was so vivid, I could really feel the bunk move. I might advise myself I was envisioning and to get up. Anyhow I couldn't move for quite a while. The times I was at long last fit to open my eyes, obviously things were fine. In any case they were exceptionally unnerving dreams.

This phenomenon is called Sleep Paralysis. It has been happening for centuries.  It is usually caused by irregular sleep patterns in a particular individual.

When I was in college, I would get about 4 hours of sleep at night and 4 hours of sleep in the afternoon.  This started to take quite the toll on me.  I remember the first time I experienced this horrible nightmare.  I was actually asleep on my side facing my roommate's bed, and there was a dark figure floating over him.  All I could do was move my eyes; my entire body was immobile.  I was hearing whispers.  I finally snapped out of this nightmare; I was in tears.

After a year of this, I realized it wasn't any type of demonic oppression, but that I could actually somewhat control what I could hear or see in the nightmares.

As it is pretty scary, try to think of good things when you wake up in the nightmare, remember that you are in control of your thoughts.

Oh yes . quite often . i used to think it happens only with me. actually what I can conclude is these nightmares are due to stress and lack of sleep . it usually happens to me when i sleep too late . one important thing is to get a good sleep and nothing better if you work so much that you fall off to sleep as soon as u lie down , i bet u will never get nightmares of this kind. LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST DONT FORGET THE ALMIGHTY. PRAY AND SLEEP , U WILL SURELY GET A RELAXED AND UNDISTURBED SLEEP. THIS IS MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

Oh god this happens to me so much its so scary. I try to get up but i can't and then ill try screaming but it won't work. I usually just try and stay calm but it really hard to because I'm wondering if I'm about to die or what! Anyways usually doesn't last long but i know for sure that during the time I'm spooked. no idea what it means never really thought too much of it

my theory is that it has something to do with the fear of having no control, nightmares come from your own imagination so i would think that your mind  is just simulating one of your fears.

Its surprising how comman this actually is. I have it where I think  im awake because im doing exactly what I was doing before falling asleep, ie; laying in bed. All of a sudden something strange happens for example ive had spaceships fly up to the window, and burglars walking into the room. Then I know im asleep  as  cant move or talk. If I dont wake myself up the dreams get really scary so im in a near state of panic trying to wake up. Then after laying back down it can all start again. What does it mean? I wish I knew.

I do not think it to be a nightmare. It is a state of the body and mind wherein you are so much greatly afraid at the thought of an incident or dream that you are panic stricken and your body and brain become non-functional. They become still and experience heaviness. That makes you feel that you are tightly held and unable to move or shout. My son also experiences such things as he is greatly shocked at his mother's death and during performing the rites one year back even though he is 35 year old. Now he is slowly recovering from his anxiety and fears on attending psychological consultations.

I have a friend who had this 2 times per week. One night after he got held, he saw a very scary and yellow face sleeping next to him, when he shouted very loud the face disappears. He scared the hell out of me.

It can be only an illusion or hallucinations as they call it. Seeing something which may not be really there. It appears so because of mental disturbances and fear complex. A person next to him will not be seeing this because he is healthy.

I have had this before too - mostly when I was experiencing a clinical depression and it's called "sleep paralysis".   In mine, my body won't move, but my mind senses someone beside me - it's terrifying and I often woke up screaming.  As the depression subsided, so did the sleep paralysis.

Yes, it is very terrific feeling. My son experienced it for some months. He used to sense his mother talking to him or scolding him. His body becomes sweat and he wants to extend his hand towards me(his father) but he could not move at all.

During dreams, especially nightmares, the body tends to act out the events, meaning we may reach for something or even walk as a result of dreaming. To protect a person from this the body becomes paralyzed. There are times after our body is paralyzed, that we awaken, this happens to some people more often than others.

It is nothing to be alarmed about.

Bangungot is a generic term for an unexplained death during sleep. It is usually the onset of a stroke or heart attack during sleep. One cause is sleep apnea. It is a serious disorder that causes your breathing to stop repeatedly while you sleep. These breathing pauses or "apneas" usually last 10 to 30 seconds and can happen many times throughout the night.

The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, which happens when the upper airway gets blocked during sleep. Most often, the blockage happens when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses and closes during sleep. Relaxed throat muscles, a narrow airway, a large tongue or extra fatty tissue in the throat can also block the airway.

Central apnea and mixed apnea are other types of sleep apnea, but are more rare. In central sleep apnea the part of the brain that controls breathing doesn't work properly.

During deep sleep, your heart rate and blood pressure drop. This allows your heart to rest. The pattern of snoring, pauses in breathing and then gasping or choking for air that happen with sleep apnea prevent you from getting the kind of restful, deep sleep your body needs. This can result in high blood pressure.

When your blood pressure is high, your heart must work too hard. This can lead to heart attack or stroke. More than half of people with untreated sleep apnea have high blood pressure. If sleep apnea isn't treated for a long time, your heart begins to wear out because it has to pump harder to cope with the lack of oxygen caused by repeated pauses in breathing. Then you have a heart attack while you sleep.

It only happens to me, if I go to bed extremely or if something is on my mind. I believe the only way to help this problem is to get Baptized, so that I can get rid of this evil spirit that is following me.

ASTRAL PROJECTION: Many are quite adept at astral projection especially during sleep and don't even know what astral projection is. The symptoms of paralysis or being held down are common during astral projection and is considered getting stuck in the doorway. Usually you are only a breath away from loosing the paralysis sensation and having an astral travel experience or lucid dreaming with your self-awareness available to you.

You are probably such a frequent flyer that you are bound to have a few of these paralysis experiences. So just know that its ok. You just had take off problems.

Wikipedia definition: Astral projection (or astral travel) is an interpretation of out-of-body experience (OBE) that assumes the existence of an "astral body" separate from the physical body and capable of travelling outside it.

The goods news is we all have probably had this dream, the bad news is that some of us remember it. This does indeed sound like a classic case of sleep paralysis. A person experiencing sleep paralysis frequently describes themselves as being fully aware but unable to move or speak. This may be accompanied by the sensation of being crushed or suffocated and sometimes being manipulated by ghosts, aliens, or demons. But what does it mean? It means your brain is not perfect... sorry that`s the nicest way I can bother to put that. Perfect brains, not unlike my own, have neurons which have projections that paralyze voluntary motor neurons while we are in REM sleep. REM sleep is our "deepest phase" of sleep when we do most of our dreaming. We perfect brained people enjoy this dream paralysis feature because it keeps us from waking up covered in bruises and broken glass when we dream that we can fly out our bedroom window. In short sleep paralysis prevents sleep walking. Sometimes however, folks like yourself experience the opposite problem. REM sleep which is the "deepest phase" of sleep is actually the most similar phase of sleep to being awake, and should we wake up instead of beginning to dream our brain-stem which is responsible for the paralyzing might not get the memo and boom; there you are paralyzed because you brain stem, thinks your dreaming, thinking and remembering because you are actually awake, and freaking out because you don't know what's happening. In your pseudo-dream state of course you imagine the worst which is that someone or something is doing this to you.
Causes?: stress, alcohol, caffeine, or any substances which may affect our natural sleep cycles
Solutions?:New brain-stem, lay off the sauce, and if it happens again try to concentrate on moving your eyes, occularmotor neurons do not appear to be effected by the paralysis, which is why REM sleep is sometimes called Rapid Eye Movement sleep and it`s why people`s eyes go wacky whirly when they dream. Realize that you can move your eyes and you`ll feel more in control and the experience will hopefully be much more like a lucid dream and less like demonic possession or an alien anal probing. Sweet dreams.

I had this happen to me and I thought I was being abducted by aliens,  It felt like they were moving around me just out of sight. I could not move or yell, I knew I was sleeping and trying to make myself wake up and I just could not wake up. It happened a second time about a year later and now it has been about 8 years.  The funny thing is I remember them putting a needle into my stomach and I woke up with a good size hole in that area with ne blood anywhere in the bed, the hole was large enough to leave a scar that I still have today.

I've heard a lot of explanations for this, and I've also had it happen to me several times. The "new age" explanation is that you're having an out of body experience and have yet to return to your body. The "spooky" explanation is that you're being visited by a ghost or demon. The "scientific" explanation is that you've woken up in the middle of REM sleep (rapid eye movement sleep that you experience during dreams), and any hallucinations you have aren't actually there. You're just dreaming--and still  somewhat sleeping--with your eyes open.

I personally prefer the scientific explanation.

You get the impression that there is someone in the room with you. You can’t see or hear him, but somehow you know he (it?) is there. He’s not nice. He means you harm. You instinctively try to draw a deep breath, but you can’t. It feels like there’s some sort of weight on your chest, like you can’t breathe.

There is a simple answer to this...
There is something in your life that your concious is trying to tell you is holding you back. You are either stressed out about something or you may not even be aware of what your concious is trying to tell you.
Dreams can mean many things - it depends on the person and their life/situaution. But dreams are always trying to tell you something because they are made from your inner thoughts and feelings.

When I was able to move, I checked on the kids and my husband was out cold.  No one has been up. My heart is still pounding. No sleep tonight. Reading through some of these comments have made me feel a little better.

I wonder if this dream is telling you that you have blocked energy within you that needs releasing.  Dreams are symbolic; if you cannot move in your dream, maybe it represents stagnation in your life.  We all have times when we want to move forward but feel that we cannot, often because of our fears.  We scream when we're afraid or so frustrated with a situation.  Maybe your silent scream is pent up energy that needs releasing through communication.
    Hope this helps.

I used to have the same nightmare for periods of time when I was younger. I never went to consult a doctor and I don´t know the medical reason, but in Mexico, they call it ¨la subida del muerto.¨

It´s a sensation of not been able to move or talk and you don´t really kow if you´re dreaming or awake. During those days, I used to be afraid of ghosts and obscurity and this all occurred to me after sleep with the lights of my house off.

In the present, I haven´t experienced it and I´m not afraid of ghosts or obscurity anymore .

Dream paralysis is an experience (terrible experience) unique to each person, during this experience you can hear strange things, see strange entities and can feel pressurized.  You want to wake up but cannot, though no harm comes to you, yet you become emotionally and physically stressed.
Many young people who go through sleep paralysis are afraid to go to sleep. Is there a cure for sleep paralysis—the answer is no there is no care. Then the question arises what is the best way to deal with sleep paralysis? My answer to this question is that read a lot about sleep paralysis. The more you know about it the more easily will be for you to deal with it.
The people who have this experience should train themselves to relax when they are going through sleep paralysis.  One should not resist it, let it pass no harm will come to you.
People having sleep paralysis should take care of their diet, pomegranates, tin peaches, apple and dates are excellent for them.  They should have at least two dates every day. But should not have more than three, as too many dates can also cause harm.
Yoga is also very good for people who go through sleep paralysis. Yoga breathing exercises are excellent for them. For more information on dreams and dream problems please do visit my website dreamazea dot com, I trying to develop it but some links in it are not working.

I see there are many answers on here, so this may have already been said, but there is Sleep Paralysis and then there is Hallucinatory Sleep Paralysis. I have the latter.
When you sleep your body releases a hormone that stops you from acting out your dreams. Sometimes your body releases to much and this is when the paralysis happen. Hallucinatory Sleep Paralysis happens closer to the dream stage, so you may see its effects play out in your dream, also some wake up and hallucinate that someone or something is holding them down. It is the brain trying to make sense of what is happening.
I find I have episodes if I sleep on back with my legs crossed or in times of heavy stress.

I believe this would depend on whether you are actually dreaming, you are awake or trying to wake up, or something else is going on, such as sleep paralysis. I have had nightmares in which I suddenly realized that I was dreaming and felt the only way I would survive the dream would be to get my husband's attention so he will wake me up. I am not sure whether this would be called a waking dream or lucid dreaming. If you are always within that as a nightmare, you might consider that you are feeling powerless about something in your life -- that you are feeling as though nothing you do or say is going to change anything or you are one of those that hold emotional pain inside rather than express it. The dream might be suggesting that there are barriers you have to break through within yourself. It could also be that there is a situation in yours or another person's life you must accept as that which you cannot change.

However, I have generalized seizures (also called grand mals) and when I am coming out of one, I am unable to control my body. Most of my seizures occur at night. Have you ever woke up and had someone tell you that you were making strange noises, gnawing at your tongue, and posturing in strange ways while you were having that dream? That is just a thought, but if you find that you have a sore tongue, sore throat, spit all over your chin, and/or a very sore body once you are awake, you might want to look into that.

I used to think it is a dream, a terrible dream. but, experience has thought me it is a reaction to emotional baggage especially when i'm too tired or going to be sick. I believe a day's hard work and good night sleep reinforced with adequate exercise will reduce or totally eliminate this phenomenon.

Sleep paralysis. It's happened to me before, and it's pretty eerie when you happen to be sleeping next to a TV or near people engaged in a conversation (I use to take naps on the couch after work or school when I was young, and the family went about doing their thing). You hear it; you may even envision it and believe it's not a dream -- either way, you're usually partially asleep. But you struggle to get up... or at least that's what it feels like.
It's unsettling and you may panic; however, I've learned to roll with it. Eventually I wake up and all is back to normal.

Sleep paralysis is a phenomenon in which a person either during falling asleep (hypnagogia) or awakening (hypnopompia), temporarily experiences an inability to move, speak, or react.

It is a transitional state between wakefulness and sleep, characterized by muscle atonia (muscle weakness). It is often accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (such as an intruder in the room) to which one is unable to react due to paralysis, and physical experiences (such as strong current running through the upper body).

One hypothesis is that it results from disrupted REM sleep, which normally induces complete muscle atonia to prevent sleepers from acting out their dreams. Sleep paralysis has been linked to disorders such as narcolepsy, migraines, anxiety disorders, and obstructive sleep apnea; however, it can also occur in isolation
