You are there, darlin'. Fifth from the base of the leaderboard.
Silly me - I was looking for my NAME on the list.
What a dweeb ...
Jenny
You guys are all amazing. I'm exhausted just READING all this stuff, let alone writing it!
I'm working fulltime these days so it's not practical for me to get involved in the comp - I hop in now and then to read a few Hubs, check the forums and my stats, but that's about it. Good luck everyone!
Does it count if we put your significant other in a speedo and an umbrella in a coke can?
As long as it is on a beach and there is rum in the coke can.
Congrats!
I was so excited to get here and then I find that todays clue is , "money".
Hubpages, is there anything you want to tell us before we start spitballing ?
Nope! It should be on the topic of "money".
And a heads-up - lots of non-financial topics will enjoy a long stretch afterwards, for those who are less interested in dollars and cents.
Hi HubPages,
I looked up the definition of money "something generally accepted as a medium of exchange, a measure of value, or a means of payment:"
I am new to HubPage and wrote my Hub
http://hubpages.com/hub/Inbox-Dollars-R … pportunity
will this quality?
I spend so much time of these hub, I wants to make sure I quality - thanks.
(Question 1) So, we cannot be abstract on the topic of money - I started another Hub "On the Money" - about being right all the time.
(Question 2) I responded to someone's request (about saving money) - and wrote a long Hub - does that count too?
http://hubpages.com/hub/Does-anyone-kno … ile-on-a_1
I am taking this so seriously!!! I love it!
Hi Marlo- I'm not hubpages but I will give you my 2c worth anyway -The comment about non-financial topics relates to topics for future days of the contest - there was lots of complaints yesterday about the investing topic. The Money topic still has to be about - well -money!
Your inbox dollar review - I would consider close to "overly promotional" - as its pushing a product and it's not exactly a balanced review - like you haven't said how MUCH money youve made on it and how many hours that took! Otherwise I think it would qualify - - BTW its not very long - long is about 1500 words around here
I think your 2nd 1 will qualify - is relevant and you have the money tag - which is critical - I havent seen anything disqualifing request answers from the contest !
Lissie,
I spend a lot of time writing my 'inbox dollar review; hub, and don't usually talk about how much I make (like AdSense, for example, which it not alot, lol). But I average about $30/month for 10 minutes a day.
Anyway, I was not trying to be overly promotional - it is truly a way to make extra money.
Oh well....I tried.
The issue whether it was overly promotional or not is moot; your Hub did not contain original content, so it was rendered ineligible. You copied it from here:
http://www.marlobydesign.com/blog/?p=15 (published Feb 7th)
Am I in trouble? That was written by me. All my original steps, research, and experience.
Are none of the 6 money hubs written by me going to count (like what happened to Greg from Maine? with some smoking article), other than the Inbox Dollars one, they were ALL written by me in the last 24 hours - I spend hours on them!
No, that was the only one rendered invalid. But if we see others that include copied content, we will stop counting your entries.
Like gamergirl said, you should be able to know whether your entries are valid or not.
Also, HubPages, am I allowed to publish the new articles I write for HubPages on my own blog AFTER they run in HubPages first? Is that acceptable - I want to add the HubPages promotion tool to my blog to promote HubPages and the contest.
Does this mean we can write about the non-financial aspect of money?
BTW, excellent hub! I left a comment and/or thumbs up! Really great stuff. If I had more money and time, I would travel! To New Zealand!
Yea Lissie! I really enjoyed reading your hub this morning. Hopefully my uncle's dreams will come true, and then I can go visit him!
Congratulations Lissie! Your Hub was supreme quality.
BTW, I have not received the Hub Pages Newsletter in three weeks. Is something amiss with my email? Yahoo is nutz sometimes.
Tnx!
Patty
All right everyone, some things were easy, some things were hard today. Weeding out the spam wasn't too hard. Selecting only five finalists, for judging by Nate Whitehill, was HARD.
Here are the 5 finalists (in no particular order):
1. How To Save Money on Your Wedding by amy jane
2. Children's Story About Money - How Now, Cow by inspirepub
3. Managing your Travel Money by Lissie
4. Grassroots Fundraising - How to Do It by Stacie Naczelnik
5. Plastic Money...and We're Not Talking About Credit Cards by Hovalis
Not to say, of course, that there weren't dozens of truly excellent other eligible Hubs, all of which win a point. But I have to make the judging job reasonable for our judges, so I had to limit it to 5.
Stay posted! We should get an answer within an hour from Nate.
The 'dup checker' is something on Hubpages' side. Though, when submitting, you as the writer should be able to discern whether or not you are posting duplicate content.
We're still waiting on Nate to judge the entries, and...I have a meeting to go to...so, please be patient.
I've emailed Nate again and will steal out of my meeting to see if he's responded.
don't want to be trouble but did mine pass the money line ???
I'd be interested in the answer to Marlo's other question.
If it's original and unique when we post the Hub, can we later take bits of it and put them elsewhere - blogs, web sites, etc?
Or do we have to keep the Hub material exclusively for HubPages forever?
Jenny

Yes - in fact you can take the whole thing too - don't confuse copyright with dupliate content - if you write something original its yours but google doesnt like duplicate postings which is why HP wouldn't let Marlo's own post to be re-published as a hubpage -

I find the best way is to write a short description of your hub, on your blog page with a link to the hub.....jimmy
I second what Jimmy said. A new short description with the link to the hub works better than copying pieces from a hub.
Ok - a new question here on the official contest thread. Any rules/restrictions for the China topic? Do all Hubs have to relate to the country? Just wondering.... thx
from tonights contest page........jimmy
Congratulations to C.M. Vanderlinden who solved this clue first. Today's topic is CHINA. (A chain is equal to 1/10 of a furlong)
You have until noon tomorrow (Saturday, Pacific Time) to publish up to 10 high-quality Hubs, each worth 1 point, that must:
be on the topic of China, either the country or the type of porcelain (here are just some examples "The casinos of Macau", "Kate Spade and Vera Wang: High end china", "Shanghai vs Hong Kong - China's 21st Century City", "China economic growth trends", etc.)
include the tag china
have at least 300 words (no credit for 299 so you might as well overshoot)
be unique and significantly different from any other Hub or Web page.
Of course, it must comply with our Terms of Use (not overly promotional, adult, etc.) Keep in mind that in judging, we're looking for Hubs that are informative, interesting, engaging and unique.
Thanks for everyone's help - I want to do the right thing in this contest, but do not think I will ever catch up to Stacie or Whitney05 - they must have a lot of time!!! I wish I could quit my job and write for HubPages full-time, lol!
Anyway, how do you go about referencing material (research or otherwise) you may use in your Hub? I go back to the Greg from Maine Hub about quitting smoking - I really enjoyed his Hub and found it to be informative (if he did use a quote from somewhere - and I am not saying he did), should he (or anyone else) reference it? I am writing an article in China and want to use a source for a historic fact - how does one go about doing that on HubPages without being disqualified?
Here is an example - jimmythejock (please do not hate me), I just need an example to use.
jimmythejock wrote:
(1) http://hubpages.com/hub/China-Tea which I happen to know a lot about these teas and remember reading something he wrote before on:
(2) http://www.tenren.com/pouchongtea1.html
(3) Under his section “Pouchong”
“Pouchong has a milder flavor than Oolong tea yet stronger than Green tea. Its taste is appreciated by tea connoisseurs worldwide.”
How does an author reference his/her material?
Marlo
I do have a lot of free time. Ha. I'm an online college student, currently without a job. Lately, I've been writing most of the hubs at night, once the dogs are fed and walked, doing only a few during the actual day other than touch- ups and finishings.
I used three or four different sources for the different teas in that hub, the comment that I came up with was a generalisation of the combined sources.....jimmy
I am not saying you did not use a reference - you must have had to...
I am saying that the line shows up the same in your Hub and the other URL:
your Hub http://hubpages.com/hub/China-Tea
"Pouchong has a milder flavor than Oolong tea yet stronger than Green tea. Its taste is appreciated by tea connoisseurs worldwide.
other URL http://www.tenren.com/pouchongtea1.html
Pouchong has a milder flavor than Oolong tea yet stronger than Green tea. Its taste is appreciated by tea connoisseurs worldwide.
I am wondering how we state our reference materials on HubPages?
Oh, thank you Jimmy. I guess I could have read that myself. DUH!!
Well, the sun is out, and I left work early. It is nice to be home with the weekend ahead of me!
As for time...I have none! No free time. I have a busy, full time job--I have students in my office all day. I've barely slept, let alone done laundry (you should see what I dug out of my closet to wear to work today), since this contest began. Even my cats are mad at me because our whole schedule has been thrown off.
Whew.
You somehow find the time to write some excellent Hubs - great job!!! I think you have a great chance to win and good luck!
Marlo,
Do remember that Jimmy has been writing on Hubpages for some time, and this means ample opportunity for all of his content to have been crawled and checked plenty. If that hub is still up, then it is because it passed the duplicate checker and such. One line of text referenced is not anywhere near the realm of copying, say, entire articles or blog posts and trying to post them as a Hub.
Sorry for the delay folks! Nate has rendered his judgment:
"I have read over all of the selections and I was most impressed with Amy's Jane's article about how to save for your wedding. I thought the level of detail and knowledge she put into the article was extraordinary. I would definitely choose her as the winner. After that, I thought that Lissie's article on managing travel money was original and very useful."
So 5 pts to amy jane!
The scoreboard and leaderboard are now updated!
Thanks Stacie!
I just did a little happy dance around my house
Well done Amy Jane - I read the finalists and I couldn't have picked it, they were all good!
Just wondering... if I write a hub and then improve it during the same 24-hour period (before the next clue), when does it get read? Right after it's published, right after the next clue is posted, or sometime in-between (in which case I don't know whether the final version was read or not)? It seems like the "5 best" hubs have been going to the judge about an hour after the clue is up... do you read all of the previous day's hubs that fast?
We know when a Hub is published for the first time, and when it's been updated. We give a Hub its evaluation when it's complete, which for most Hubs is when it's published for the first time. We know there are some exceptions so we'll take another look then.
I think YESTERDAY's best Hubs go to the judge about an hour after TODAY's clue - so there has been plenty of time to read the Hubs as they were published, and keep a running "top 5" list along the way.
If you publish first, you're in the top 5 - until Hub #6 gets published, then someone falls off.
Or if the first six or eight are all blindingly good, the guys might have six or eight in the top 5 until the last possible second.
I don't expect that they wait until the day closes before they start reading - I can't imagine THAT working when there are 60 or 70 Hubs to read!
Jenny
With today's clue. How will the duplicate checker work with putting poems on hubs?
We'll just be very careful checking it. The vast majority of the Hub, and at least 300 words, must be totally original, if you are going to excerpt published poems.
Hey everyone - so either people took a breather on Friday night or China wasn't a favorite topic for most, because we only had 25 eligible entries. Unfortunately, there were a lot that were invalidated for being duplicate (one author had used a thesaurus to swap out many words on their Hubs, but our duplicate detection system still caught them), and there were a handful that were shy of 300 words (like we said, overshoot to be careful!). But those 25 are pretty impressive!
Here are the five finalists - and it was difficult, as always:
China's Endangered Nationalities by Patty Inglish, MS
Top Web Sites for Doing Business in China by MC7
Chinese New Year Recipes by Whitney05
The Art of the Yixing Teapot by Marye Audet
Interesting facts about China by MM Del Rosario
Liz Strauss from Successful-Blog.com will be the judge. We should have a winner & runner-up within an hour! Thank you for your patience, everyone!
China's Endangered Nationalities by Patty Inglish, MS
Top Web Sites for Doing Business in China by MC7
Chinese New Year Recipes by Whitney05
The Art of the Yixing Teapot by Marye Audet
Interesting facts about China by MM Del Rosario
good luck you guys and well done on reaching the finals.....jimmy
OK, everyone - we have a relatively early announcement (because there were fewer entries and fewer work distractions on a weekend, I suppose!): Liz Strauss has selected a winner and runner-up!
Winner :
China's Endangered Nationalities By Patty Inglish, MS
Runner up:
The Art of the Yixing Teapot by Marye Audet
Congratulations Patty and Marye! Patty gets 5 pts, and C.M. Vanderlinden gets 1 pt for guessing yesterday's topic "China" correctly. The leaderboard and scoreboard have been updated, and Stacie Naczelnik is still in the lead with 65 points!
Just a reminder about tomorrow - we'll be moving into the 11th day of the competition so the clues will get harder and they'll be worth 2 pts instead. And you'll have 2 guesses (either in the same comment or in separate comments).
Thank you very much; I am highly honored and extensively appreciative!
Patty
Congrats Patty! I was very impressed with your submission! And Mayre's teapot hub was also outstanding... right out of the gate!
The teapot Hub is most extraordinary indeed, steph!. Thank you for the kind words.

POETRY! Hubpages here is an update on my schedule -I do 12 hour days Tue, Wed Thu (thats Mon Tue Wed) California time. Can you please arrange to have all the poetry, literature, love, jokes, fashion and similar girly, lovey-dovey subjects on those days. I will entertain anything to do with money, property, travel (not China), dance, Australia NZ on those days!
I'm off to update my other neglected sites! ROTFL
Cheers Lissie
Well done Patty! And very deserved!
I am amazed that I was second. But thank you. I happen to love teapots, and Yixings fascinate me, so that was a no brainer for me.
Marye, I thought your hub was awesome. Not to mention the fact that you put it together so quickly after the clue came out! Congrats!!
