dang,
that went so fast. I did solve it on my own. However, way way way too slow.
Nice work, Whitney
Rawr! Now everyone clear the way, it's back to the commode for Jason! Poor guy. No wait, poor everyone else in the office. LOL
I hope they have a real bathroom, and not just a portapotty.
Can't be as bad as my building. There're about 600 people who work here and only 8 bathrooms.
Hey everyone -
Books were pretty popular - 52 valid entries today, and they were fantastic to read. You guys obviously are very impassioned about your literary interests. That's probably why choosing just 5 finalists was a bit harder than usual, but here they are, in no particular order:
1. Best of Their Sub Genres: The Greatest Fantasy Books by brittanyc
2. Science Fiction Classics (Books) by LiamBean
3. Travel Guides : Best Guide Books by Lissie
4. Five Books Every Girl Should Read by Stacie Naczelnik
5. Best Children's Cookbooks by stephhicks68
Alex from Neatorama (which is a pretty neato blog) has been given the links to these Hubs to judge. We hope to hear from him within an hour with the winner!
Just jumping into the convo whats going on?!
Yeey for me being new
Haven't heard from Alex at Neatorama yet, so I've updated the scoreboard and leaderboard with the new points minus the day 12 best Hub winner. Stacie Naczelnik is the leader with 82 points, and Whitney05 with 75 points!
Hey All,
Alex has written back! Here is his judgment:
"The fantasy one by brittanyc is my pick. It was a close one between her and the 5 book every girl should read by Stacie Naczelnik."
Congratulations to brittanyc, who wins 5 pts! The scoreboard & leaderboard are now up to date.
Just a note that the Killer Hubbing & Blogging Package includes a MacBook Pro, and there has been an upgrade to this:
http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/features.html
The new version has a faster CPU, larger hard drive, and the cool multitouch trackpad feature that the iPhone screen has (where you can pinch or expand with two fingers at the same time).
The timing couldn't be more perfect - the new one is the one we'll be giving as part of the prize package!
I'll update the CPU stat (2.2 GHz to 2.4 GHz) on the contest page tomorrow.
Wow, I just joined and they is a really cool cotest. This sounds like fun. So the clue will be given at noon, is that right?
That's right - noon PST, give or take a few minutes.
It isn't given here, so definitely check out the HubLove page for info (if you haven't already): http://hubpages.com/help/hublove
Thank you Stephanie and Stacie for clearing it all up for me! [ so much action already]
Hi everyone,
Tough clue today, huh? Kudos to Peter, who figured out the logic to solve it. Enjoy writing Hubs today on teens!
As for teens' younger siblings, babies, we had 30 valid entries (and about 2 dozen, unfortunately, that were full of copied content so were rendered ineligible). But those 30 were great, and here were 5 that I considered among the best (in no particular order):
1. A Dad's Guide to Surviving Pregnancy by Peter M. Lopez
2. When Children Want Children by helenathegreat
3. How to Choose Quality Childcare by stephhicks68
4. Choosing a Nanny for Your Baby by Stacie Naczelnik
5. The Best Early Infant Care by Patty Inglish, MS
Lela Davidson, Hubber and owner of After The Bubbly, will be today's judge. See you in an hour!
The lone male among 4 brilliant females, and on "baby" no less. I'm holding my breath.
Hey everyone,
Well, it looks like today is Peter's lucky day! Here's what Lela had to say:
Peter gets 5 bonus pts (and he'll get 2 tomorrow for pulling everyone out of clue agony), and another 5 pts goes to Lela for judging. 2 pts goes to Whitney05 for guessing "baby" correctly yesterday.
The scoreboard and leaderboard (threshold for entry is 4 pts now) have been updated. Stacie Naczelnik, with 86 points, still claims the lead!
Congrats to both of you; those were such excellent hubs!
babies, teens so tomorrow it should be middle-aged or boomers - and I can write on that ROTFL!
Since Stacie has her smiley, this can be Lissie's.
I agree, by the way, I'm skipping the "teen" topic on principle.
I want to know if anyone can give me some clarification (there has been so much controversy in these Forums, let me clarify - I just want some help in understanding, and am not looking to get attacked or cause controversy).
With that said, the HubLove Contest rules state you must "Publish new, original Hubs". How is it handled when there are two hubs that have practically the same topic? I am asking because I was going to post one on the same topic, but searched and found that someone already posted one:
Example #1:
Talking with your teen about sex and relationships
http://hubpages.com/hub/Talking-with-yo … lationship
was posted, then
Talking to Your Teenager about Sex http://hubpages.com/hub/Talking-to-Your … -About-Sex
Example #2:
Teen-age Depression
http://hubpages.com/hub/Teen-age-Depression
was posted, then
Teenage Depression
http://hubpages.com/hub/Teenage-Depression
These are all GREAT hubs, but since these topics exist already, I cannot publish mine.
Just wondering which one counts for points (the first?), and the last one published does not count because it is duplicate?
Again, they are all great, please do not shoot the messenger.
I also want to point out that not all hubbers check to see what topics have already been written about. I started writing my hub about talking to teenagers about sex right after the clue was guessed yesterday. I didn't check to see what the other hubs being published were because I was busy working on my own. I didn't publish it until much later because 1) I had to write it in segments (as I had to work too) and 2) I like to let my hubs sit for a bit by themselves, then go back and read them to make sure they make since.
So, by the time I publish it, IF I see someone has published something on the same or similar topic, I'm not going to waste all of the work I've put into it.
By the way, Marlo--the link you left in a comment on my hub doesn't work.
I tend to do the same thing. Just start writing and then go back later to read the hubs others have posted in the meantime. I do check before I write to make sure the topic/angle is fresh against those that have been published in the past.
Ditto. Sometimes. I will check a topic out if I think it's going to be a highly written about topic, just to make sure that there's not 5 others out there. But, if I feel that the topic is fairly unique or different, then I don't worry about checking.
*shoots the messenger*
I asked about this before and was told that they're acceptable because everyone writes from a different angle.
Hope that doesn't change now.
Oh no, I felt that!!
I was really just asking and not trying to be controversial - I guess I can publish mine then.
By the way, I loved your hub http://hubpages.com/hub/Teenage-Depression
What a great read!!
Try this and see if they are similar. http://www.webconfs.com/similar-page-checker.php
I did not compare the words on the similar hubs, I was just asking if it is okay to write a hub on the same topic. Thanks for the link anyway, I guess I can use it before publishing (if I need to).
Yes, that's correct. As long as the Hubs themselves, in terms of content, aren't copies of each other or copies of other Web pages (that includes the same content except swapping out a few words here and there with a thesaurus), then they are eligible. I took a look at the teenage depression examples and they are definitely different from each other, despite being on the same topic.
Cool! Thank you. What a quick response. That clears things up for me - there are so many great hubs out there...it is nice to read hubs on the same topic, but from different perspectives.
Although the hubs in question have almost identical urls, they are in no way duplicates, they are different articles related to the same topic, the writing styles are different and the information is different too, there should be no problems entering both into the contest. .....jimmy
Because we can all approach the topics from different angles, they are still counting topics that are the same. If that makes sense. You can stil write about these topics, just try to make it different and your own.
The teen topic was hard for me to think of things without being too cliche- teenage drinking, teen sex, teen pregnancy- but alas I did do a teen pregnancy hub as well as 2 others a little different.
Thanks for the official word hubpages icon of doom!
and thanks jimmy, for peeking at things too.
To be honest, I've stopped worrying about what others have written about each day and focus more on presenting hubs that I feel represent my knowledge and/or information that is worthwhile to readers globally. It's still a challenge, but I'm really hoping that by the end of 30 days I'll have hit my 100 hub mark and still be writing.
Marlo,
Also remember that a typical hub, being only 500 to 2000 words, could not possibly cover any topic in its entirety. Books are written on all these topics.
Jonathan
Good point, well now that my question has been * thoroughly * answered, I am good to go. Thanks to everyone who helped clear things up! There are so many great 'teen' hubs, the judges are going to have their hands full today!
I think that is one of the things that is interesting about the contest..with having one subject everyday there will more than likely be hubs that are similar. I did not know GG wrote one similar to mine, obviously she was deep in the writing process when I published...but hers is awesome!
Everything I have read so far has been.
Hey everyone,
First MANY THANKS to Paul Deeds who launched the day's clue today (without a hitch, better than me, huh?). I was out of the office and was, sadly, without a WiFi connection.
Now today's entries: they were really fantastic. Well-thought out and often very heartfelt. A very difficult decision to get to just 5 finalists (I know I say that every day but I mean it; those who have been judges can confirm this). These were 5 that stood out in being especially unique in their informational value. Here they are:
1. Dangerous Teen Activities by stephhicks68
2. How to Know When It's Time to "Leave the Nest" by helenathegreat
3. Weird Teen Movies by Stacie Naczelnik
4. Modesty, An Issue For Today's Youth; Where On Earth Do You Find A Modest Prom Dress? by In The Doghouse
5. Adopting a Teenager by gamergirl
Today's judge? James Edmondson - Paul's little brother and actually the designer of the site (yes, he created the cool graphics you see on the contest page, as well as our logo). He's 20 years old so has the most recent experience of being a teenager, too.
How exciting...not counting mine, these are all fabulous hubs!
I agree, Stacie - its going to be tough to choose a winner!
I very much love being in the top five! It was especially nice that one time when I wasn't trying... but since then, I've been trying almost every day!
Good luck to everyone!
Man, I was sure my activities for teens would catch their eye. Pooh. Oh well. The top 5 are great hubs, anyway. :-( Good luck.
Anyone else want to guess at what hubpages meant in their newsletter by: "And that might include something special for the contenders who don't quite make it to 1st place... "
Inquiring minds are very curious.
I saw that too! Wondering..... any hints, HP?
I wonder wonder what the consolation prizes will be!
Maybe gift certificates someplace really awesome and tech-y?
