Why does HubPages ignore Foul Language used by Certain People?

I was just wondering why foul language (obscene language, profanity, cursing, swearing, expletives, bad words, dirty words) is being tolerated in certain cases, and in the case of certain  individuals.

It is especially embarrassing when it comes from a woman. Should she not be counselled by a Moderator or someone?

I don't mind sarcasm, irony, heated debate, etc. But we must all draw a line at 'lavatory talk'.

I thought this was a clean social networking site.

Who or what are you referring to? I've always found Hubpages to be a relatively clean site. And what's with the sexism?

Must we? Thanks for telling me what I must do - again.....

This is def the place to make another public complaint about what other people do, though.

Perhaps you could counsel her yourself? As you have appointed yourself overseer of the moral standards that we "must all draw a line at"?

Maybe HP would offer you an unpaid job checking the forums for "lavatory talk."?

      Good luck. big_smile

      1. Moderators can't be everywhere all the time. It's up to individual Hubbers to alert them to problems by hitting the "report" button.

      2.  This is not a social networking site. It is a place to write articles.  The forum is a place for the writers to gather when they need a break from writing.

Really it is what one considers 'lavatory talk' most of it is just a combination of biological terms and body parts, sometimes even land-scaping language like the 'ass' and the 'hole' pretty simple words that I would consider.

You hurt me to my HEART Stevie! I have never heard an unkind word from you... ever! And, who, in this whole world, would attack you in any way? Everyone knows you are the nicest guy on hubpages. This is not a forum for you to be in.  It's gonna get bad in here soon.

hurt you?  im sorry friendlyworld.  i wasn't trying to offend anyone here.  i was just voicing an opinion that's all.  then after thinking about how i wasn't in the mood to debate it, i decided to erase it before anyone could reply to it.  although it looks like im too late on that.  lollol  anyways, im sorry if i offended you, as that wasn't my intention.

eta:  Idk about being the nicest guy on here, but i do appreciate you saying that.  im sure there's other guys on here every bit as nice as i am.  besides, i never believe people are like a 100 percent evil or good.  just some people tend to let one side of themselves dominate over the other.  which side that is, is really up to the person.

WOW - well speaking as one of the elite idiots, I would have to say that Mark may be right about the life expectancy of this thread, though three days may have be an overestimate, in light of Lisa's and Shadesbreath's assessment of the content - which is is spot on, by the way.  That's what I think, although thinking does come hard to us elite idiots...

What's with the elite hubber smacking, by the way? This is the third thread with this kind of remark in it that I have come across in as many days... I am starting to feel like there's a target painted on my back. Sheesh - I drop in for some fun and conversation, and end up feeling like I need to duck smile

When the Elite label was introduced, several of us said it was a terrible choice of words and would cause trouble.

            Told you so!

It needs to be changed, and now, because people are misunderstanding the term.  Why not make it V for volunteer?

Yep, some of us knew this was a bad choice of titles with at least one of the "Elite" having the "E" removed from their profile.

Actually, the title probably prevents some members from volunteering because it does set them up for such comments.

I don't see a big deal with the "e" thing.  People need to quit making issues out everything from "e's" to bad words to something someone says in the politics forum.  (How about changing the meaning of the "e" from "elite" to "esteemed". Might that be better?  roll )

                1. Marisa Wright profile image85
Marisa Wrightposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Lisa, whether people "ought to" do something is beside the point.  If you set something up that invites misinterpretation, you can bet your sweet bippy that someone will misinterpret it. So why not avoid it?

Everyone knows perfectly well that the word "elite" can have negative connotations as well as positive ones, so it was a bad choice.

                2. Randy Godwin profile image61
Randy Godwinposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Sure it would be better, but the original meaning of the "E" would not be soon forgotten.  Better to just change the title completely.  It really makes no difference to anyone but the volunteers because they are the ones getting the flack about the label anyway!

                  1. RedElf profile image88

Ahh, well - no good deed goes unpunished... wink

Perhaps if so many people find it offensive that some of us volunteers were given an honorific/special title (pat on the head) for helping out, perhaps we could be identified by the area in which we volunteer/help out.

SO then, we could be HN for the HubNuggets Team, HG for greeters, or whatever would make sense...

Then again, perhaps if we/I grow a thicker skin and learn to ignore certain types of comments (and we all know who - er - WHAT they are wink ) then some folks, and we all know who they are wink or do we? maybe that should be, and we all know what they are? or,... we all know why they are?... wait - I know - it's "and we all know where they are"... ? ...

ya know what - who cares? Maybe they will eventually tired of taking potshots. We live in hope big_smile

It doesn't play favorites. The HubPages Staff is limited in power with regards to the forum thread, because they are limited in number in Staff.
The moderators are not always in the forums and when they are, they do not have the power to moderate all threads. As for having some individual you supposedly and apparently chosen to say needs to be "counseled" is a misunderstanding. Moderators do not "counsel" members about their actions, they ban them from the forums based on reports and reviews brought to their attention by other hub members.
You don't mind sarcasm or irony, but heated debates in their nature always(almost) turn into some sort of "lavatory talk", regardless of which said is right or wrong.
This was your second misunderstanding- HubPages is NOT a social networking site, like Facebook or Myspace or any other.

How do you know whether it goes unpunished?

I used foul language for about 6 months, then ended up getting a 3 month forum ban for the priviledge.

It wasn't the use of language though, it was the context in which it was used.

What is wrong with swearing precisely when used in a general context rather than an aggressive or abusive one?

If I called you a f*c***g c*n* right now (hypothetical) then that would probably justify a ban. If I said "man its f*cking cold in the UK right now, I have 5 layers on", then that isn't exactly a crime punishable by firing squad is it?

How do you know who gets 3 day forum bans? As far as I am aware this is not publicly disclosed and can remain firmly between Hubpages and the individual who has been warned or disciplined. Your assumption is unfounded.

So Pi...... ummmm..... errrrmmmm.... piddle off.

Personally, I'm all for profanity as long as it is well used.  Shakespeare used lots of 'rude' words because they were in common use and he was writing for his audience,  Obviously, the constant use of rude verbs is annoying but hey, some authors are notorious for it' DH Lawrence  to name but one.

In answer to the OP's original question, perhaps HP could appoint some moral guardians to help it control the rising tide of foul language, perversion and general filth with which it's being threatened.

You could even have an accolade to go with it, with maybe a suitable picture/icon:

    Usually most commentary when it becomes defiling and debased on a level of lavatory wordage, it may be taken at face value, involved offending someone at some level, or be taken in a humorous light, such as, for example (and not directed at any one individual or Hubber intended, purely mentioned for commentary purpose;

Please take this <object prepared for inclusion into a specific insertion point> and Royally <make motion, usually in a forward manner, and then removed after a short period, then repeated for a duration> go <mentioning of various forms of sexual conduct or activity> self <intended to be the recipient of said object and motion mentioned above> .....

Some how just doesn't express well enough when said in that manner hmm

Do we need to be reminded that vulgar language comes from the Latin "vulgate" - vulgar language is the language of the common people. All this begins with class discrimination, and that ticks me off as much as the free speech issues.

Really ? - I can't see how any language would have the same word for two such disparate body parts.  Any more info on this ?  the online dictionary places seem to think it is an anglo-saxon word at least 1000 years old.

Lisa HWposted 14 years agoin reply to this

That's what I was going to say....     I talk to my foyer all the time, but it never talks back.  Now, foyer language, however, and lavatory language, are two completely different things.    Ask my foyer (although I don't think it will answer you.)

  35. lorlie6 profile image73
    lorlie6posted 14 years ago

And another thing...I haven't read this entire thread, but how did foul language evolve into elitism?
I almost decided against that little 'e' because I don't want to be considered separate from other Hubbers. I am part of this community.  And most communities I am familiar with have volunteers of one sort or another.
    Boy, am I steamed!

    1. Randy Godwin profile image61
Randy Godwinposted 14 years agoin reply to this

But this is nothing against any of the very helpful volunteers here, Lorie!  The title itself just begs for insults from disgruntled members or someone with an axe to grind against any of those trying to help out.

It would be the same if the "E" stood for exalted instead of elite.  Please don't take it personally because it really isn't.

As I stated earlier, it makes no difference to me, but I don't see using the Elite label helping to engender community spirit and instead, the exact opposite may be the result.  But good luck
      anyway!

lorlie6posted 14 years agoin reply to this

Thanks for clearing that up, mega-I admire you for reading this entire thread to sort it all out.  And thanks, Randy, for your words-I guess I got a tad miffed when I saw that word 'idiot' bandied about.
I think this all goes to show that there are some people more 'exalted' than others-of course there's some sort of hierarchy here.  I'm not really savvy when it comes to computers-the Internet, especially-and put my feelings 'out there' when it's not necessary.
*Back off from the machine, Laurel* smile
...and I did, for a couple of hours, did some reading and gardening, took a long walk, and feel much more free of all the perceived or real BS.
        Love youse guys!

hey - I just re-read over this last thread to determine what was going on with elite hubber bashing - and it all started when stevennix said something about elite hubbers - but I don't think he was refering to the elite VOLUNTEERS hubbers - he was talking about people that seem to get away with alot of borderline bad stuff.  If he were here I'm sure he'd clear this up and say - no, he doesn't think the hubbers who volunteer and have the little e for elite are idiots (half of them)  - no he was talking about those who sometimes break rules but don't get called on it - which is actually because nobody bothers to report them because they're popular.  get it?  I know for a fact he doesn't think the volunteer hubbers are idiots.  i'm sure.  that is, I think so  smile  so its all a beeeeeg misunderstaning!
