ten hours? That sounds like a dream! I reckon I get about 6 - 7, but need about 8. Still, my own fault, since I am still on the computer and is now 01.20 am!

4 is OK for me if I can have the occasional 6-hour-sleep to catch up.  These days, I often do a kind of 3.5 hours here, another 1.5 hours there, kind of thing.   I don't have young kids to take care of, and I work on my time (at least a good part of the time) so it kind of works.  A couple of days a week I'll sleep 5.5 or 6 hours in a row if I start feeling too much like crap.    smile

I like to sleep at least 8 hours but am okay with  7-ish. Any less than that and I suffer from sleep deprivation and eventually need to make it up.

How do you time how long you slept?  I'm picturing you hitting the button of a stopwatch the moment you fall asleep - which would be quite a feat. lol

I would be delighted if sleep were optional.  Sure, I like to sleep occasionally, but for the most part it's a necessary evil.  Emphasis on the evil.

I'm not a big fan of sleeping.   smile   There are too many "important" things to do.  First there are all the day-to-day responsibilities most of us have.  Then, though, there's the even more "important" stuff like watching re-runs of late-night talk shows, infomercials, and being on the computer at 2/3 a.m.    Being a useless vegetable is a vital part of any busy day.    lol

camlo,   .....and the real "killer" and source of amazement is watching re-runs of the same infomercials over and over, year after year.   lol     Now there's a wise use of time.    smile

I probably shouldn't mention this "encouraging" bit of information; but from the time I was five months along with my son, until he was seven and his little sister was four, I got no more than 4 hours of sleep a night, often 3.  Finally, one Friday night I got a whole six hours of sleep!   smile  (And these were kids who  sleep all night too.    smile  It was just that they got up really early, I'd be watching one or the other when they were babies (on was a premie who had to be watched), or else I'd stay up after they went to sleep in order to begin my "second living shift" as a writer (and house-cleaner).   hmm   It was a "good kind of exhausted", though.   lol

hmm i wish i could just sleep a whole night..
if i go to bed before midnight i seem to wake with a headache, the othertimes, i'm always laying awake because my neck constantly hurts so i'm normally online until 2 or 3 am, sometimes 4, yet last monday was 4.45am, then up at 7 to start my day all over again. tomorrow, ok, thats only 20mins away, is saterday so.. i can actually sleep in until 8am, but its still not midnight yet and i have soooo much to do.. a brain like mine never sleeps, it wont even stop talkin long enough for me to leave the keyboard alone.. one day i'll find my once in a lifetime 5 minutes peace, i just can't remember how i did it or where i learnt it.. so for now.. a couple hours here an there is all i get.

Sleep?  What's that?  I work the graveyard shift at a hospital  We start at 7 pm and get off at 07:30 if we are 'on time'. This morning was not one of those days/eve.  I stayed an extra hour and now will sleep for 4 hrs only in order to swing back to the 'normal' sleep pattern this w/e.  Ave sleep: 4 - 5 hrs.  sad

Hi, Paula. Try to find time and do some napping! Make it routine, every day. At least 10 minutes! it works and you will feel better as soon as you get used to have it. I've been in your shoes. Make 12 year old watch 2 year old and have a nap! I used to do it between jobs. I could get myself ready for a second job, put my head to bed, close my eyes and go to sleep, in 10 minutes I wake up without the alarm or anything and just go to work. Your body needs rest, or it will break or you'll get sick. It is serious. We are build that way we have to rest to stay healthy.

girl, i hear ya... takes it's toll big time, ya have to find a balance..
i had 3 jobs until i got 2 more, now i have none, i am sooo happy!
i used to start my firfst one which was cleaning bakery offices at 3am, finish at 6 in time to go and pick everyone up to go to our day job working in a vineyard, that was 40mins away from home..  then at 3.45 i'd drop them all off again, race home for a coffee then go to my waitressing job by 5pm, finish anywhere from 11pm to 1am, an start all over again.

after a year i quit waitressing through the week and only did sat nights the rest on call.. wel i was called in regularly anyway, but i did love it. the vineyard finished for  the season and i took up a job in logistics, 4pm to 2am mon to fri.. there went waitressing through the week, but i never had a life with my friends.. it was only a temp job so i was happy when it finished but loved the pay.. after that i gave up the cleaning job, and became a cycle posite.. until i broke some ribs flyin off a motorbike lol then damaging my hand breaking in a wild horse.. followed by a cracked forehead, there went work for a year.. when i was healed i was working 77hours a week meat processing.. i was still working on horses in my spare time, sleep.. it just doesn't happen, and now i suffer the pain from years of muscle strain and can't sleep anyway.. moral is.. learn from MY mistakes.. no job is worth the amount of pain i have to live in on a daily basis, and i'm not even on sickness benefit, i don't beleive in it.. i now work from home and earn enough to pay the rent and a bit more.. but i'm not on hub to earn money, i'm here to play and have fun and meet hundreds of awesome people sharing their stories with others...

everyone.. if you have more than one job.. it only means just over broke, or just obey the boss...  it's not worth it.

camloposted 13 years agoin reply to this

You're absolutely right! I used to do up to 4 jobs, now I only do one, and get by on what I've got ... it really is better that way.

But the one I have takes it out of me. Day before yesterday I worked so long that I only got 2.5 hours sleep. But today I'm off, and had a whole 7 hours last night, so there's nothing really to complain about.

BTW: People who only need 7 hours, like me, live longer. Saw a documentary about it on TV.

          thats true.

I've heard that a healthy sleep is about 6 hours. But right now we are in race of competing with the world and having a situation where our time is flying and we can't spare a single min, we must give some time to ourselves by taking proper sleep and rest.

I would like about 10 hours - once in awhile, just for fun.  But it's really more like 4 or 5 and then several hours of up and down up and down.  I don't know if there's anything I can do about it, but I feel most of the time like I'm running on empty.  Once in awhile I get to take a little nap in the afternoon and that feels, oh, so good! smile
