The Reason Hub Forums are no longer Fun.

When I first joined Hub, I looked forward to good debates, discussion, learning about other Hubbers, and even the occasional  arguments. You can learn a lot from what people write, and what pushes their buttons.  But over the past couple weeks, since some decided that they were 'offended' by others remarks, and the Hub team warranted putting some in time out, the forums have been left to the religious, food and entertainment topics.  These 'time outs', I feel border on the rights we are allotted through the freedom of speech, and have made the forums a place where walking on eggshells has become the norm.  Your thought?

There is no freedom of speech on a forum, it is totally up to those who maintain it.

That is exactly quite true, Uninvited. "Freedom" is really based on whether or not you agree with whomever is in charge...

Wow, I guess I'm a little out of the loop. This is the first I've heard of any time outs. What's the reasoning and who are the principle targets? Are people getting banned for attack hubs on other hubbers or just for unpopular views that stir things up?

      1. jiberish profile image81
jiberishposted 14 years agoin reply to this

People have been 'offended' in forums, and some feel 'personally attacked' so the offenders are put into a 3 day time out of forums.

Uninvited Writerposted 14 years agoin reply to this

People do not get banned just for offending someone. You have to go pretty far in your insults. And as Larry posted in another thread about this, it's ultimately down to HubPages. If they don't see a ban-worthy comment, they won't ban anyone.

Do people realize what free speech entails? This is privately owned, therefor any regulation is up to the ownership or body of leadership in ownership (and stated within the certified agreement) as long as it does not exhibit discrimination. (A poor, but valid example) The Catholic church discriminates by not letting those who have fulfilled certain requirements (i.e. first communion) to accept the Eucharist. They may stop people from participating, but they cannot lock their doors to them.

There are no eggshells on my Hubs!  I totally agree with you Jibby - that's crap!  If you disagree with someone, so be it - but don't silence the opposing views.

My policy is simple: If anyone can't accept hearing what the opposition has to say, they should keep their opinion to themselves.

    6. profile image0
sneakorocksolidposted 14 years agoin reply to this

I agree, but there are those who are easily offended. I did my turn in time-out I wasn't happy about it but it's like what I wrote about my son's club soccer team. You have agumentative/competitive people and you have those who aren't. The problem arises when the less competitive want on the team but they don't like the out-for-blood mentality. They won't admit thats not where they belong they would rather make it a miserable time for the competitive people until they get what they want.

This was obvious when certain hubbers made off hand remarks about how they won't go to the forums because everybody is so mean. They could careless if some people enjoy the sniping it just doesn't suit them. What they should do is read whats going on and if they aren't wanting to get blown away go to a different topic rather than make everybody accomodate them. This attitude seems awfully selfish to me but I'd rather aggresively debate than get all huggy, kissy.

I agree , but I guess everyone has a different idea of fun too.

I thought some people were rude and were never banned ,and then whoosh some went like lightening speed.

Mostly it seems offensive language is banned and/or personal attacks.

It has changed, but not all the changes are bad.

    1. jiberish profile image81
jiberishposted 14 years agoin reply to this

I agree that name calling, and offensive language should not be allowed, but what constitutes rude?

      1. Eaglekiwi profile image74
Eaglekiwiposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Name calling is immature and not something even tolerated at preschool level , and Ive heard some very immature comments made to other hubbers....

Rude unless specified is probably ruled at the discretion of management.

Its like this freedom of speech thing/tradition/right, definatley misused (IMHO)...but oh well ,truth is when its not interesting I just go play in another playground lol

Hold on there ... Bill Clinton was an upstanding guy!

In fact ... he worked hard to please Americans from his desk at the oval office.

Case in point ... Monica Lewinski ... He allowed her to orate on for hours without once telling her shut her mouth and leave. That's integrity, which exempts him from the expletive replacement list.

Bill Clinton should hereby not be used as a word of censure, as he was one of the few presidents who was willing to give of himself until he was fully spent.

Now I ask you ... how many other presidents do you know with that much integrity?

Say 'no' to hating on Bill!

Oh the Martin Van Buren to you all! Stop acting like a bunch of Alexander Hamiltons and James Madisons. You should all stop embracing your inner Samuel Adamses and let go of your egoist Andrew Jacksons. You just make me sick. Next thing you know, I'll hear countless ramblings of incoherent nonsense about how John Tyler I am and how I should stop being such a James Knox Polk.

To Chester Arthur with the lot of you!

I read through a lot of forums and there was no profanity from Nicomp.

I'm not sure if outsiders can read the forums, there was nothing that warrented a TOS, it was a good dicussion.

I was banned for referring to a bag of hair and for offering a personal opinion this is privately owned and they can enforce as they choose. It just seems some attacks are overlooked while some result in bans!

It's not fun when people resort to name calling because they lack a logical argument. It happens a lot.  It also seems to happen most when folks get off the original topic the forum originally solicited comments on.  I've been guilty of it as well, not getting rude, but jumping topic.

    1. jiberish profile image81
jiberishposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Jumping topic isn't a crime, from what I can see there has been no name calling lately.

      1. profile image58
C.J. Wrightposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Agree, jumping topic isn't against policy. However it seems like decorum is lost more often when the commentary jumps topic. Just an opinion.

Actually Tex's girlfriend (tounge placed firmly in cheek) engages in a lot of name calling/personal attacks/rudeness. She acuses others of being a troll, then follows him into a thread, never answers the question. Her comments are only directed to Tex.  Me thinks her flowery words reach too many ears.

I have asked for a reason and was given one I don't know about anybody else. Both times I was banned were for very innocuous reasons, but it is their right to ban whom they choose.

Is it the same as time out.  I need to know.  I tend to speak my mind a little more than I should.  But I dont think anyone should shut me up.  I'm  sorry you were banned.  I respect what you have to say. I love to argue points with you.  I think this whole banned/timeout thing is a terrible insult.

I think the community has as much to do with enforcement as the HubPages staff.  One reason some people don't get banned is that their "transgessions" go unreported.  It was suggested that hubbers who express liberal political opinions are banned less often than those who are more conservative.  It could be that liberals are quicker to alert the "government" to a perceived problem.  wink

But I did notice one thing. Concerning using president's names as explicatives, in place of profanity. I enjoyd reading all these explicatives!  I was rolling..... Lots of president's names used, beginning with George Washington. There was one omission, though.  Why in the Barak Obama was his name left out?  Oh, it's just for past presidents?   So what the Barak?  Why not use the current president?  Guess everybody's too Obama'n scared of being banned?

Well, I guess I've done it now. See yall in 3 days. I've committed the unpardonable sin.

Well, I finally did it.  I got a little miffed in a religous forum, not because of anyone's viewpoint in particular, but just the stupid back-n-forth, back-n-forth of exchanges of personality with no cogent arguments or anything worth wasting time on of two people who just couldn't leave each other alone.  I got sick of it and I told everyone off and really thought about leaving the whole venue altogether.  I think I must have been in a "mood"; I don't really usually react that way, but the whole thing seemed to be more of a chat room for very ugly-minded and intolerant people rather than intelligent, topical conversations that include everyone.

I like the silly forums for some light relief and we have some really cool, very witty people that I enjoy so much.

I'm just gonna stay with the Sandpit and things like that.  The heck with it!

My take? Don't announce it ... don't tear down the hubs ... just take a hiatus and think about it. If it feels right, then stick with the vacation ... otherwise, you can return any time and just tell everyone you were on a 'real' vacation and just got back. smile
