When I first joined Hub, I looked forward to good debates, discussion, learning about other Hubbers, and even the occasional arguments. You can learn a lot from what people write, and what pushes their buttons. But over the past couple weeks, since some decided that they were 'offended' by others remarks, and the Hub team warranted putting some in time out, the forums have been left to the religious, food and entertainment topics. These 'time outs', I feel border on the rights we are allotted through the freedom of speech, and have made the forums a place where walking on eggshells has become the norm. Your thought?
Wow, I guess I'm a little out of the loop. This is the first I've heard of any time outs. What's the reasoning and who are the principle targets? Are people getting banned for attack hubs on other hubbers or just for unpopular views that stir things up?
People do not get banned just for offending someone. You have to go pretty far in your insults. And as Larry posted in another thread about this, it's ultimately down to HubPages. If they don't see a ban-worthy comment, they won't ban anyone.
Do people realize what free speech entails? This is privately owned, therefor any regulation is up to the ownership or body of leadership in ownership (and stated within the certified agreement) as long as it does not exhibit discrimination. (A poor, but valid example) The Catholic church discriminates by not letting those who have fulfilled certain requirements (i.e. first communion) to accept the Eucharist. They may stop people from participating, but they cannot lock their doors to them.
i think so. at least, when i am not logged on, i can see the forums. and i think before i ever signed up i seem to recall reading the forums but i could be wrong. hopefully one of the cool mods will wander in and let us know
You can read the forums, but you can't post in them. About the forums being no longer fun, I think they still are. It's up to you to find the thread that suits you best. Lots of them with different topics.

I agree, but there are those who are easily offended. I did my turn in time-out I wasn't happy about it but it's like what I wrote about my son's club soccer team. You have agumentative/competitive people and you have those who aren't. The problem arises when the less competitive want on the team but they don't like the out-for-blood mentality. They won't admit thats not where they belong they would rather make it a miserable time for the competitive people until they get what they want.
This was obvious when certain hubbers made off hand remarks about how they won't go to the forums because everybody is so mean. They could careless if some people enjoy the sniping it just doesn't suit them. What they should do is read whats going on and if they aren't wanting to get blown away go to a different topic rather than make everybody accomodate them. This attitude seems awfully selfish to me but I'd rather aggresively debate than get all huggy, kissy.

Thats not fair! It was hard writing what I wrote! The women of the Hubs rock! Hell! I named my new boxers after cole and my pillow after univited writer! Lets don't go there the women here are outstanding!
so well said...you must be human and mortal and always on the edge of new discoveries...arguments are good...this house of words called a forum should probably be moderated but definitely not censored completely unless the posters comments could be used in a court case
Glad to hear it. (Because, of course, most of my hubs are either religious or political! We would have some SERIOUS debate on this forum. LOL)
I agree with you, and just recently posted a message on a religious forum how truly unfortunate it is to see adults acting like fourth graders. Writers especially should be able to develop coherent responses rather than name-calling.
True but maybe he was having a good time it's hard to tell, I'd love to spend a night shooting at congress with a tank...who wouldn't. I'd go all George Washington on them, then pull, a Rutherford Hayes.
If too off topic let me know but forums are fun for this newbie but too even add to the fun I think I am falling in serious love with another hubber in a different country and Iam in a serious relationship so it's ridiculous. Like high school, I'm playing it cool, he doesn't have a clue, I hope. I've gone mad. gossip is always fun
Oh the Martin Van Buren to you all! Stop acting like a bunch of Alexander Hamiltons and James Madisons. You should all stop embracing your inner Samuel Adamses and let go of your egoist Andrew Jacksons. You just make me sick. Next thing you know, I'll hear countless ramblings of incoherent nonsense about how John Tyler I am and how I should stop being such a James Knox Polk.
I was banned for referring to a bag of hair and for offering a personal opinion this is privately owned and they can enforce as they choose. It just seems some attacks are overlooked while some result in bans!
It's not fun when people resort to name calling because they lack a logical argument. It happens a lot. It also seems to happen most when folks get off the original topic the forum originally solicited comments on. I've been guilty of it as well, not getting rude, but jumping topic.
Agree, jumping topic isn't against policy. However it seems like decorum is lost more often when the commentary jumps topic. Just an opinion.
Actually Tex's girlfriend (tounge placed firmly in cheek) engages in a lot of name calling/personal attacks/rudeness. She acuses others of being a troll, then follows him into a thread, never answers the question. Her comments are only directed to Tex. Me thinks her flowery words reach too many ears.
So you are notified if you are banned? Is it the same as time out. I need to know. I tend to speak my mind a little more than I should. But I dont think anyone should shut me up. I'm sorry you were banned. I respect what you have to say. I love to argue points with you. I think this whole banned/timeout thing is a terrible insult.
I think the community has as much to do with enforcement as the HubPages staff. One reason some people don't get banned is that their "transgessions" go unreported. It was suggested that hubbers who express liberal political opinions are banned less often than those who are more conservative. It could be that liberals are quicker to alert the "government" to a perceived problem.
Yeah, Ron Montgomery, I'm sure you're right here. Seems like the conservatives are 'shut up' a lot.
But I did notice one thing. Concerning using president's names as explicatives, in place of profanity. I enjoyd reading all these explicatives! I was rolling..... Lots of president's names used, beginning with George Washington. There was one omission, though. Why in the Barak Obama was his name left out? Oh, it's just for past presidents? So what the Barak? Why not use the current president? Guess everybody's too Obama'n scared of being banned?
Well, I guess I've done it now. See yall in 3 days. I've committed the unpardonable sin.
Everyone just needs to learn to grow a thicker skin and harden the f**k up! If you don't like what people are saying, then find a different thread to hang out in. It's not like there isn't enough to choose from....
Well, I finally did it. I got a little miffed in a religous forum, not because of anyone's viewpoint in particular, but just the stupid back-n-forth, back-n-forth of exchanges of personality with no cogent arguments or anything worth wasting time on of two people who just couldn't leave each other alone. I got sick of it and I told everyone off and really thought about leaving the whole venue altogether. I think I must have been in a "mood"; I don't really usually react that way, but the whole thing seemed to be more of a chat room for very ugly-minded and intolerant people rather than intelligent, topical conversations that include everyone.
I like the silly forums for some light relief and we have some really cool, very witty people that I enjoy so much.
I'm just gonna stay with the Sandpit and things like that. The heck with it!
Woo hoo! I knew you have been watching over me oh starchy one! I feel fortified (with vitamins) knowing you are flying out there... somewhere... I had thought maybe you were just stuck to the wall after somebody flung you.
Yeah ... being able to divorce all of your online friends at the click of a fey keys makes it a bit too easy.
I believe that most have second thoughts once they leave, but fail to return as they fear they will be seen differently ... like an ex that walked out on them and decided to return.
My take? Don't announce it ... don't tear down the hubs ... just take a hiatus and think about it. If it feels right, then stick with the vacation ... otherwise, you can return any time and just tell everyone you were on a 'real' vacation and just got back.
I'm plum out right now, Eagle. Off to Walmart to get some Bubble Yum now. I'm into the new "espresso" flavor myself, doesn't look pretty with a black wad tucked in the cheek, but most people don't say anything. Should I pick up the pictures?
Happiness means quiet nerves. My nerves have not been too quiet here of late. And since I don't believe in dining on an empty stomach, I will now have a Scotch, that should help my stomach as well as my nerves. To Teddy Roosevelt with it all I say!
Right back atcha, cosette. I'm famous for my bubbles, really irritates the husband. Monkey see, monkey do, my kids have inherited the bubble gene, and the love, and they imitate me. It really pisses him off, I think that's part of the reason I enjoy it so. If I'm irritated with him, I'm definitely chewing a big honking piece of Bubble Yum. True story, I used to have stock in the company that made it. Sold it in college.
I see no decrease in the funnest of these forums. Some people know how to joke, others don't. I learned this the first week of being here. If I didn't i'd dislike Misha right now, but instead, hes my Homeboy.
Is it me, or is it just getting boring around the forums lately? And so many people seem to have disappeared. Where is the fun? Did everyone just get tired of it "all" and pick up their toys and go home?
I dislike PC.It stifles free speech, and free thought. It turns people agains each other, through altered forms of communication, and creates confusion through altering the meaning of words, and phrases. What are your thoughts on it?http://www.truenews.org/Liberalism/poli … ntrol.html
To date, I have been denied permission to ask and/or answer questions because of revenge? mark downs by disgruntled hubbers. I get blocked for a while, then un-blocked, then blocked again. Also some of my Q&As are deleted by HP staff without notice or a chance to defend my position. The Q&A...
The movie that caused the riots is like South Park but not as funny. That's because it was not meant to be funny. Taken down in whole by youtube - you're not missing anything. Not a b-rated but a z-rated movie. Here is part 2 trailer of this "epic' in...
http://randygodwin.hubpages.com/hub/Goo … ges-ForumsRandy was outspoken of the 'malicious' practices of HubPages and it's staff. Now, in this hub where he explains what abuse he suffered, a hubber called Drax, so-called poet, came and called him - 'who rattled your cage... fuck off', ' it is...
