The first time I went for traffic, but now I know through the first attempt what to write about that I know I can dominate the top pages of the search results, now I am going for adsense too....this is to a targeted plan to buy some photoshop software for my drawing...then the world shall be mine!!
I agree, I've enjoyed reading these topics because they've been filled with so much useful info. Can't wait to see what Ryan and Darkside have coming up.
I will definitely do my best to get 30 done, I'd like to build up as much passive income as possible before classes start this fall.
I am taking an intensive Psych summer course that requires a final 30 page research paper (minimum) which I haven't started. It is due in about 10 days. AHHH! Plus there is tons more writing for that class. Since I won't start writing for class until this weekend, it would fall after the 24th...hmmm...Maybe I'll 'cheat' a little and break down my research paper and some of the mini-essays into a few abstract hubs for the challenge....I could probably get 8 or so. They won't earn tons, if any...but at least it's something!
Um...since I'm doing a Hub A Day Anyway (and have been for some weeks), and will be putting out chapters of my science fiction novel (The Seeder) as a Hub A Day until The End (120 of those or so, 14 down, 116 to go)...
OK. Sign me up, I guess. No enthusiasm, though. Fair warning. Hate joining stuff. Grinch On Board. Not even a good Devil's Advocate, just apathetic. Wet blanket.
Now just watch me gain bunches and bunches of benefits from doing this. Hate when that happens.
Oh, no. Instructions. Didn't count on any instructions. Hate instructions.
Good thing this isn't a Page for the Public; I'd already be getting slammed for keyword stuffing....
Count me in! I got 22 in 30 days last time, so we'll see how far I get this time. heh
Did anyone here do the last HubChallenge and can offer some tips on success. I'm thinking of aiming for 1 per day, like a few of us here. I've also read Darkside's blog and find his approach intriguing. Wondering if anyone has any insight into the problem with shooting for one per day.
I suppose the one hub a day rule only applies if you want your hubpage fans to see your hubpage that you publish each day, when I did the last challenge I published 3 or 4 in a day and the traffic built over a week and when I tried to do the 100 hubs I only managed 42, but this has tripled my traffic since doing the last challenge so don't worry about one a day, work on your hubpage titles and possible ones that you know yourself that you will be able to carry through writing and finish.
Good luck everyone!
My opinion on this is you are better off trying to write more than one per day if you can do it. Reason being that if you can't write a hub one day, you still have some room to work to make it in 30 days. This is all about challenging yourself.
This is great, by having it be an ongoing challenge it will help us hubbers have plenty of topics to write about. Thanks!
Sure, I'm in. Might be the kick I need to post more hubs
I should start thinking about what to write, hmm...
If I don't complete the 30 hubs in 30 days, what happens to me, then?
Thanks!
I would complete the task anyway. Else, you will be tortured by other successful hub owners with sarcasm. Sorry, but life is cruel here ))
WHOA! Then I really should start listing down topics and titles...
btw, is there any place I can find the results of the last hub challenge??
I'm in for the 30 in 30 days - 30 decent hubs, minimum length 800 words, pics, links, the lot.
Yes, I've seen your mass spamming. And now you're here to promote it. No thanks.
Are we using the same hubchallenge tag to track these hubs, or a new one?
Also, where can I find the comprehensive guide? Will there be one? Particularly for someone like me who's new to hubpages and to the challenge. Thanks!
I Have absolutely no idea how I would go with this challenge: But if my mate from Portland is brave enough to give it a go, then I will just have to come up with 30 Pearls!!
So Count the Pearldiver in too.
By the way cheers for the video post on the Google Wheel Ryan, have changed the tags on 5 of my hubs and messed with some Titles using the Wheel and it's a great tool and has got some traffic to barren hubs. Will deff be using it on my 30 hubs, looking forward to Friday. !
Also I want to do 30 related hubs so if possible could someone explain the Capstone to me or whatever it is called and does it make a big difference. Cheers !
I just can't wait for this. I am all set with my Topic and Content.
I think some valid concerns have been raised in this forum and some hubs by some of the members of the community that should ultimately be addressed. I will be participating in the challenge since it has been my goal all along to complete 200 hubs by the end of the year which averages out to about 1 per day with a few days off. Thus, the rate of production is within reason but it does take me about 1 hour for a non-researched hub and 2-4 hours for one that I have to research.
That being said, here are my take on some of the concerns:
1. Focusing on hub writing takes time from some of the other valuable interaction that occurs on the site which makes this a great place to be. I started at Squidoo a few days before discovering this site and don't plan on going back much because the interaction with others is minimal. You feel like you are on your own over there, and it is hard to stay on track without some assistance when you are new.
2. Quality may suffer at the expense of maintaining numbers at all costs. I certainly hope that will not happen but it is likely to occur. My over hub quality will not change since I tend to be fact oriented and concise. My hubs are from 500-1000 words and will likely stay there. I am concerned, however, that the constant push will lower overall quality on the site which may ultimately be penalized in the search engines. I would hate to see that happen since the traffic opportunities here are so good. I would suspect that during the 100 in 30 day challenge as many hubbers saw an increase in traffic and earnings, the 40% cut of HubPages also increased. I am fearful that the motivation for an ongoing push for more hubs may be the almighty dollar. I just don't want the near-term goals to cloud the long-term vision hurting everyone.
I would suggest that all hubs receive a review at 2-3 months of age (or maybe even Hubbers as well) and all hubs less than a certain value (say 40) or all Hubbers with a low author score (say 40) be deleted. With any amount of effort, it is not difficult to accomplish those scores. Others may have differing ideas and opinions, but I think as the number of hubs increase, it might be worth getting rid of some of the dead wood. I would certainly hate to see the strides that HubPages has made be destroyed.
3. My final concern is what might happen with a change in ownership although I can't imagine any new owner changing a successful business model. This is minor compared to numbers 1 and 2 above.
Let me try to answer some. First off, the whole goal of this challenge is to challenge yourself. It really shouldn't be a race to have a whole lot of hubs.
1. I beg to differ. They do have a forum there. It is called Squidu. It can be overwhelming for someone just starting. There is a chatroom that is run by one of the lensmasters that I do go to so there is some community interaction in that way.
2.Quality does not have to suffer to create a quality hub. If it takes long, fine. Don't fret if you don't get all of your hubs done in one day. The whole point is that you tried and you had accomplished more than if you did not. I believe the hub score covers quality. If anyone writes substandard hubs, their score would go down.
Het Julie you in a whiteout?
If not you'll certainly have more success with some kind of profile image... people like to see who the author is even if it's an avatar and not really you...
Also, one last thing about concerns regarding HubPages maintaining our quality and how something like the HubChallenge can potentially hurt our overall quality level of content.
There is absolutely no need to be concerned about this...ever. We have some really talented engineers who focus on this say in and day out and one of the funny things is that the last HubChallenge ended up creating an amazing amount of high-quality content. We had lots of really good stuff come through, actually.
I guess it goes to show that Hubbers will maintain their quality standards and even something like a little bit of a challenge won't make them do otherwise.
(this is a very good thing)
@Trekkiemelissa,
Thanks for your response. I certainly will keep doing what I am doing and won't change because of artificially imposed deadlines. I view golf the same way. I am not the best but work to improve myself at my own pace. I am sure that the ongoing challenge will result in improvement.
I had been to SquidU, but didn't see the chatroom. I may have to go back sometime. It may have been the layout or the overwhelming nature. It was easier for me to fit it and get started here. Likely just a personal issue. Thanks for the info.
Lastly, I am wondering if we might be able to post links to our 30 day challenge hubs here as we finish or if that will be verboten. I may have missed the answer to this in the deluge. Thanks in advance.
Yep, you'll be able to post your links in here whenever you give an update. I would say wait until you at least have 5 published before you post so that we don't have too many updates flying through here.
I'll be posting some more detailed instructions that will answer all of these types of questions later on today. Just waiting on a few things before I can post it.
The site can be overwhelming. There are a lot of things to learn there. I've been a year and I am still learning. They have their quarterly giant squid challenge. Now this (Upcoming) and last quarter they have had teams which has a lens but also the groups are run on ning.
The the whole idea of this is to start and stop whenever you want to. You challenge only yourself. I was planning on creating my own challenge if they did not have this. I still have a goal of around 200 hubs.
I have to agree with Ryan on this one. I post new hubs when I can, but the hub challenge really cannot hurt the community if each person is being an individual and posting when and how they please.
No one can make you stay or leave Hubpages, and I think the challenge was blown way out of proportion as being a bad thing. It is simply motivation for those who enjoy having a fun environment where they can share the challenge to hub more and better.
Well said SP, ya don't wanna do it, don't do it. You do wanna do it then do it, tis hardly rocket science. I have been meaning to up my hubs for ages and I will try and do this challenge. Plus I also think the challenge is also a community thing.
We need Hubpages to grow so we can also benefit from it. Or if you only write one hub every 6 months just continue playing about on the Forum, personally I do both. But sorry not everyone thinks the challenge is a bad thing, I think it is a good thing and I also think the last one did nothing at all to harm the community spirit.
Trust me I have been on a few writing websites and this is by far the best in both staff and members. I don't think Ryan was being harsh, he runs the site, what do you expect him to say. I think the world you live in outside Hubs must be different to mine because if what Ryan said was harsh then I suggest you don't go out too much because the real world might be way too harsh for you.
When all is said and done Hubpages is a business and a damn good one, it will get bigger and with it our hubs PR rankings will get higher. The Forums and the banter won't change one bit, anyways that is my view and I deff will complete the 30 day challenge and I wish all doing it Good Luck.
Sweet, now -- on with the HubChallenge!!!
*waves hand in air like I'm on some type of steed*
What Darkside said!
I'm ready to move on, personally. Last night I chose 11 topics with keywords and started sketching. I'm getting pretty excited, actually. It's nice to challenge myself. Looking forward to the additional information Ryan will post. I'm guessing we will have a banner to attach to the hubs again?
Now that I am back at hubbing again after a break of almost an year, I want to give it a shot!
My oh my what an interesting thread since I last dropped in here yesterday! Good job, Ryan!
This is my honest opinion, folks....
If you're serious about writing (for whatever YOUR reason is) then this hub challenge can help you (become a better writer, make more Adsense money, get more pageviews, get more fans, make new friends).
If you want to socialize and kick back, read what others are doing and learning from them and just generally have fun, then HubPages can do that for you too, but it's not the focus of this challenge. I'll support each of you in whatever choice you make. But, for crying out loud, don't think poorly of someone who makes a different choice than you.
Let's leave the drama at the door & get busy writing fellow Hub Challenge Participants!
Okay, I'm a "lost guy" asking for directions to the local mall, and we know how traumatic THAT has to be.
A few days back, I dragged myself kicking and screaming into the idea of joining the HubChallenge but have never succeeded in finding the ROP (Rules Of Participation)...whatever they're actually called. Been stumbling around in the Forums, shooting myself in the foot, banging my head into walls, and other time honored cliches, but still no ROP. Left menu, right menu, Hubtivity menu, still no ROP.
Now, the OLD me would go off in a sour grapes huff and stick my head firmly in the sand, absolutely convinced that no Elmer Fudd would come along with his double gauge to blast my feathery ostrich tail that I left sticking up in the air. But this being the NEW, nearly semi-civilized, moderately sociable me, I'd actually like to find dem rools!
(Gasp! Pant! Oh, no!!! Hyperventilating!!!! Must...not... expose...true...self.)
Dang. Too late.
Posting these right now, actually.
(was waiting on a few, sweet graphics)
Thanks, Ryan. Never occurred me I was shining the flashlight out the window of a moving car, searching for road signs that were still being painted!
Da' rules (there aren't too many of 'em):
http://hubpages.com/forum/topic/17849
Ghost32, last time there weren't many rules. We just tried to write 100 hubs in 30 days. If we wanted to we made a tag that said hub challenge. And posted a link in a thread that was set up for that purpose.
Maybe this time it will be different.
Does this include weekends? One whole months worth? How long are these hubs? Number of words required or standard? Don't know if I can keep up. Could be a challenge.
Ryan your link to the Keyword academy isn't working. I am thinking of joining in but not sure if I can start the 24th.
Yeah, their site was down for a little bit and for some reason now the link doesn't work....I just sent Courtney an email to see what the dealio is.
It's definitely worth joining -- they really know their stuff.
Add me to the list please. Ill give it my best shot !
I'll give the 30 in 30 an opportunity to put me over the century mark in blogs! Add me to the list!
I've read Da Rules and Stuff (thanks Ryan). May I make a suggestion? Can we have like an award (or voting) for the best hub (or top 10 best hubs) and/or worst hub (or top 10 worst hubs) for those who will participate in the Hub Challenge? I just thought this will make us work harder to come up with good quality hubs during the challenge period.
This would be difficult to administer because everyone will be on a different timeline. Your 'award' is seeing your pageviews rise, your writing skills improve, your fan base growing, and hopefully your Adsense revenue.
I'm not so sure about awards. This isn't meant to be competitive. And I would feel terrible about someone getting a worst hub award - epecially if it was me. And I'm already stress enough.
I'm just am enjoying the enthusiasm of fellow hubbers as we try to write every day, and improve ourselves.
Would it be terribly sacrilegious for me to start the challenge tonight? (I'd do July 22-August 22, instead of the 24)
I have so much writing to do for an intensive summer course that I think starting now could make all the difference. (I'm going to force myself to finish all my academic work over the weekend...after that I'll be "all written out" for a few days.)
Yeah, gonna publish my first hubchallenge hub tonight...I can't wait!!! I'm still going to do 30 in 30, so I guess the start/end date doesn't really matter as long as it's 30 days!
Of course you can start tonight. It's 30 in 30 days. Not which 30 days.
Seeing your post reminded me to check my email - thanks for the recipe!!! I love candied ginger, so I know it'll be awesome.
I can't wait to try it this weekend. I have to dig out the ice cream maker, which hasn't been used for a very long time.
No I'm not stressed because of the hub challenge. Making a living online is fraught with peril. And this week has been a tough one.
Hmmm to join the hub challenge or not to join the hubchallenge. My problem is I live in Tokyo so the timings are PST; sometimes I write in the AM and it gets counted on one day but if I write in the PM it gets counted on the next. So if I write PM today and AM tomorrow then PM the day after it looks like 2 Hubs on 1 day, a missed day, then 1 Hub on the third day. Don't think I'll be able to qualify for this.
Besides I have been holding myself to a 1 Hub per day Minimum self-Standard since I joined hub Pages anyway, so what's the point???
I just enjoy the camaraderie. I write at least one hub a day too. But it's the feeling of community that makes it fun for me.
Sounds like a good enough reason to me! I just hope I won't be dinged for my time-zone difference; I don't want to join, then get kicked out. Emotional rollar-coaster rides are not what I'm here for.
It's not like that at all, Richard. There is no start or stop time. It's ongoing. A few have already started. It's all up to you. There are no disqualifications.
You can post nothing for 29 days and post 30 all on one day. The one a day is just a suggestion. Just post them when they're ready. No one is watching you.
I'm in then! Sounds super friendly; I like it. Thanks!
Time to read up on Keywordacademy while not getting caught at work.
Welcome aboard the HubChallenge cruise! (I just made that part up...) It'll be fun. I'll be your personal mentor if you need help. Just email me. I had fantastic results with the last challenge.
Sounds great, where's the bar? Hehehe I'll see what I can do, so July 24th is the collective jumping overboard? Might as well consider my start from then. Do I need to say anything specific on my hub? Like, "This is for the challenge?" or do I write as usual?
Write as usual. Ryan posted some cool graphics that you can put on your hub to advertise it's for the challenge. http://hubpages.com/forum/topic/17849. I picked the "Mama needs a new pair of shoes" one.
EDIT: Guess this link doesn't work. See below for alternate instructions.
I'm already noticing that there's a lot of hubbers participating that I've never gotten a chance to interact with. This is really great!
I've noticed the same thing Nelle! I've become the fan of several tonight. This is going to be great.

I write 5 hubs a day. 2 of them are quality hubs that I enjoy writing and put my most effort to, the rest are there to share some kind of information I think is interesting. But these are not as good and I actually struggle to write them. So how many of your hubs are you satisfied with?

I understand some people are worried about the "antiHubChallenge" or whatever it's called, and I just wanted to say something on a personal level to get my own thoughts out in the open about it. And this is my PERSONAL view - yes, we do have a HubChallenge team and we...

I have completed three 30 day HubChallenges. One in May, one in late July, and one during the calendar month of September. In all 3 cases, I published more than 30 hubs in 30 days. In fact, in the latest challenge I committed to publishing 45 and I did it. 45 hubs put me at...

I was pretty confident I could produce 100 hubs, and if I wasn't feeling the effects of burn out I still think I could do it. But right now, If I get to just 70 I'll be content (I'm at 51 now). I could quit all together and not feel bad, but I wanted to add as many as possible because I'm going to...

Are you in the midst of a Hub Challenge? Fantastic! Should you like to share the Hubs you have published as you continue along on your epic journey, share them here. Please do not post Hub links in other threads or start a new thread for individual Hubs. That makes things messy, and makes it harder...

I looked at my account, and I started hubbing on 8/22/09. I have 20 hubs, so far. I think I'll make it! I have until 9/22/09 to write ten more hubs. So, 10 more hubs to go in 8 days...and I don't want them to be trash, either...well, wish me luck! And GOOD LUCK to...
