I look Indian but I am actually not. I am bengali, I come from a small country called Bangladesh! Incedentially, it is next to India! So, anybody speak up about this matter!

To be fair, it's hard to tell what country people come from. It's like the US and Canada, people won't know until you tell them.

My looks also similar to Indians. In fact sub continental people have similar appearance and sometimes its very difficult to recognize who is from India or who is from Bangladesh.Actually I enjoy when people can not make any assumption of my country of origin.

No one ever asked me if I was Indian, though if they did I don't think I would be insulted. Seems to be a harmless question hardly worth the effort to take offense, and it gives you a chance to talk about yourself and set the record straight.

People mistake my heritage all the time.  That doesn't bother me; it's easy enough to correct.  And really, people from one country or ethnic group do vary greatly in appearance, so it's very understandable.

On another, related issue, there seems to be a misconception that all "white" people are the same, culturally.  That's the only thing that bothers me.

    Heck,

I been asked if I was a Spaniard, and this by Cubanos.
    Didn't mind that.

At a Safeway Pharmacy here, the pretty lady behind the counter kept looking at me and smiling and I remember thinking, "what' the opposite of pedophilia ? I hope this girl ain't it because I'm 50 years old and she's not 20".

Finally she sidles up to me and shyly asks, "are you an Indian" ?
I said, no, I'm not from India.

And she said, no, I mean, like, Commanche or Iroquois or something.
I was flattered, to say the least.
Hell, I'm a big American Indian fan, and to be mistaken for one?
Went home on cloud 9, I tells ya.

We lived in Niagara Falls for a while, and as I had no health insurance at that time I go to this clinic and get well attended and I was really impressed thinking I really will enjoy my stay here in Western New Yohk.

    And then, the inevitable question.

Are you a member of the nation ?

Whoa, now, isn't that supposed to be "citizen" ?
    not "member" ?
Until I found out the question really was if I was a member of the Seneca nation of Indians.

Once more, I tells ya, my man, I was absolutely flattered.
Proud to be mistaken to be one of a people with a proud history.
Exploited, victims of land-grabbing, but FIGHTERS, my man.

Be proud of who you are.
Get mad only if somebody asks if you're a martian !

We Australians are like the British in a way, very hard to pick by looks or sound, as we are from different countries sharing one culture, and eventually we all sound and think like Australian.
People do not ask where you come from much, as we have refugees here who would rather forget where they came from, and unless someone wants to talk about their origins most of us leave it out.

I don't see any reason why I should feel bad to be an Indian. Indians are known for their cultural and family values. Though nobody can say from which part of India i belong or what to from my accent and looks it does not hurt me when people ask me if i am a Gujarati or Hindu. Nobody has asked me so far if i am from another Nationality so far. Maybe then I might feel bad because in all my Profiles i have written that i am an indian and i hate it when people do not bother to read my profile before asking questions.

I am proud I am an Indian. There is no other place i want to be and I have happily turn down jobs offers from other countries.

Filipinos are sometimes mistaken for Malaysians, Indonesians, Thais, and of course, Indians.

A funny thing happened to us while we were in England.

I was with a male friend who had stubble all over his cheeks and chin. Being in a foreign land, we were always on the lookout for fellow Pinoys. We spotted 2 ladies, and he greeted them in Filipino (our national language). They just passed us by. Later on when we got to know each other they told us they did not pay attention to us before because they thought my friend was Indian, and they were not so keen on talking to strangers.

I am only a small amount of indian.  I am pale as a ghost and I do not look indian as far as having dark skin.  I do have dark hair though.  No one has ever asked me if I was indian, they ask me if I am irish.  I have white skin and some freckles.

I think I am indian and irish.  I guess my skin is irish and hair and some features are indian.  I think I am part cherokee indian and maybe another kind of indian too.  We didn't know what kind of indian the other is in our family.  I will admit I do look irish.  I must since everyone asks, well they did when I used to wear my hair a certain way...for some reason that really showed up my irish when i pulled my hair off my face.

Besides, I would never get offended if someone asks if I am some other race than what I am.  I would be happy if someone noticed the indian, but they notice the irish.  I would not get offended if someone asked me if I was a different race though.

There are so many people who ask questions like that to make conversation or just out of curiosity, but I do not think it is worth getting offended over unless you know they are asking so that they can discriminate against you for that particular reason.

There are so many people who cannot tell which race is which and they ask.  I do not think they mean any harm.

Bengali girl, I salute you! You belong to that old part of India that was the birthplace of Lord Atisha Dipamkara Shrijñana, one of the foremost Indian pandits of all times.
If I were you I would be proud to be called Indian. After all, the present boundaries are mostly recent political inventions.

But MissM, this is the best example for you. Lord Buddha was born in India in a place named Lumbini, actually a forest adjacent to the ancient city of Kapilavastu. Everybody thinks of Lord Buddha as being Indian, and with good reason. But lo and behold! Nowadays, those places are located in ... Nepal. Believe me, I never heard that Lord Buddha was Nepali. He was Indian. So you are in very, very good company.

Main of all, nowadays it's been scientifically proven that all of us humans are cousins, all share the same blood, the same DNA. Our distant parents were black, from Africa. So you see, modern borders and ancient hatreds due to race, religion and what not are just the acts of ignorant children. Sages like Lord Jesus said that we are all brothers and we thought it was metaphorical. But it was not. We are all relatives, for good.

    Cheers dear cousin!
Cheers dear cousins, all of you close to 7 billion that you are!

People ask me if I'm Irish all the time. I hate it because I have never been to Ireland, my great great great grandpa came from there. I am an America, and proud to be one. (And not all Irish are drunks.) =]

Whenever I mention I'm Irish (about 1/3, 1/4 from my mom's side and some from my dad) people look at me and tell me I don't look Irish.  I don't have red hair or freckles, which the red in my hair and the freckling in the summer is from my Scottish ancestors.  I look like my Grandfather who's all Irish.  I'm proud of my ancestry (not just because everyone wants to be Irish, but because as a white American, a lot of people don't think about cultural backgrounds for us.)
