I don't see the big deal.  We are all naked under our clothes.  What are your thoughts on the taboo of nudity in western civilization?

    1. profile image0
dennisemattposted 14 years agoin reply to this

my thoughts, living in the western civilizaton, are....many many people get confused between the natural beautifull state of nudity, and the twisted mean things that happen in porn. I am in no way a "prude", and I think the human body is amazing, and let's just say....Im not a virgin? But there is stuff out there that turns it from a bueautiful meaningful part of life, to a sick, nasty thing of self gratification.

I feel bad for not opposing your believes, but that's how I feel. The is no better sight for me than a naked female body. It's not really sexual anymore, it is more aesthetical. I do appreciate a fine male body too, but there I am much more critical. smile

And yeah, I am naked any time I can smile

There is nothing wrong about nudity but being nude in a public place is not a good thing because not everybody is interested in seeing your nakedness, but you can get nude in your house where only your husband can see you.

I think that, instead of becoming desensatized to extreme violence, our children should become desensatized to the taboo of nudity.  If my daughter saw a piece of art with a nude depiction, I would not forbid her from admiring it.  Hopefully, she would ask questions and learn that the human form is to be celebrated, not shamed.

    1. BrianFanslau profile image60

I completely agree. In college art class we studied forms and in the correct context nudity is a thing to be admired.

But I would not want to see or admire many of the average office folk coming in to work. It would simply be awkward and really cold some days...

I was raised in a house where nudity was no big deal...mom, dad, my sisters and I all walk around nude. My dad used to wake me up every morning before going to take his shower before work, so what do you think was the first thing I saw every morning when I opened my eyes. It just wasn't a big deal.

My mom's aunt and uncle lived in nudist colonies and I must say...most people are more attractive when they are wearing clothes.

Nudity is cool...sometimes and in the right context & presentation.  I posed nude in art school for some black and white photos (of course).

I do hear that in parts of Europe that nudity is pretty much out in the open...  Don't think that would appeal (and didn't to the guy who related the information).  Said there is a subtlety and even a 'naughtiness' thing missing over there that only Americans know about. wink

I've got some fine arts training, and really enjoyed my nude figure drawing classes. Also have spent a little time bating in the Arizona hotsprings; everyone goes nude out there.
My feeling is that people are beautiful in thier birthday suits; thick, thin short & tall, but we can't forget that clothing design is a really great art form and we should be free enough to be comfortable in clothing or not.

I like Jerry Seinfelds take on it - clothing should be functional. We should just wear belts with pockets; although considering the fine art of clothing design, this might not be a great look.

Americans are far more prudish about nudity than the British, Europeans or Australians.  Topless sunbathing is very common here and in many parts of Europe - Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" wouldn't have raised much interest!  Actually, our Miss Universe had a similar malfunction when her skirt fell off on the catwalk, revealing nothing but see-through knickers - but everyone just thought it was funny.

Ok - I'm going to be brave here....   (First, I don't call those cheerleaders "nude".  They're "scantily clad", and there's a difference.  "On the one hand, I don't see nudity as an issue at all.  As someone said, it's what everyone is underneath their clothes.  I made it a point to try to help my children know they should feel comfortable with their bodies.  If someone ( like BP) likes skinny dipping at some quiet lake it's their business, and I don't see any "issue" with that kind of thing.

On the other hand, I don't think that acknowledging that all body parts are not equal means associating some things with "shame".  People are told to tell children, "If anyone touches you anywhere your bathing suit would cover, tell someone."  Nobody says, "If someone touches the top of your head, tell someone."  There's a difference between the stuff that bathing suits usually cover and body parts like hands, wrists, calves, etc.  I don't think it's a bad thing to let children learn that there are places for different "levels of dress" or that there is a difference between the parts bathing suits usually cover and the tops of their heads or elbows.  We don't wear bikinis and bare feet into nice restaurants for reasons of health codes and decorum.  I don't think decorum and refinement are bad things, and I know they don't always mean people feel shame about bodies.

How free people are with their own nudity around family/friends varies from person to person, but thinking a little "decorum" is nicer in "the general public" (outside one's own circle of friends/family) doesn't mean someone thinks bodies are shameful.

I did some nude modeling in college, no problem. In one class there were two female artists I had dated. When my robe came off I could see them whispering to each other. Soon the chatter went around the room, I wasn't sure if it was positive or negative. I chose to believe positive with so many smiling women.

It wasn't allowed, but I got a couple of dates. Oh yeah, I hate being naked.
