I have to say I had some dynamite gelatos in Italy. Is it the best in the world?

I've always been very pleased with "ben and Jerry's" of many flavors.

Italy gets the vote from me. The choice of flavours the taste and texture, even trying to eat it before it melts in the heat is part of the experience.

Just thinking about Italian ice cream puts me off some of the products that are sold as ice cream here. But Ben and Jerry's is good; if a choice of thirty differnt flavours of Italian ice cream is just a memory.
If I remember rightly some of the flavours are:

Spagnola: vanilla with cherries and cherry sauce
    Tiramisu: flavoured like the desert
    Fragola: strawberry
Zuppa Inglese (which translates to something like English soup)
    which is trifle icecream
    Pistachio: Pistachio nut

Now the rest I will have to list in English as my abilty to speak or write Italian is pathetic:

Chocolate, chocolate chip, chocolate and mint, vanilla (though oddly not always available), cream, milk, tutti frutti, raspberry, pineapple, lemon, fruits of the forest, choolate and nut, melon.
Stand me in front of a display of twenty or thirty ice cream flavours of Italian ice cream and I am like a child in a sweet shop I cannot make up my mind which is my favorite flavour.

Have to agree with Italy - the best ice-creams I have ever eaten were in Naples. The pizzas are divine, too big_smile

Morroccos on Hove sea front. Dozens of flavours, and all home made by the Italian family who run the restaurant.

    Hello
The BEST ice-cream in the world comes from New Zealand!!!!  I totally agree with Eaglekiwi.
I really like the gelato in Italy too but that's not really ice-cream.

The best ice cream can be determined by what strikes your taste best, there is no best ice cream, people have different tastes=)
