I imagine she is talking about the earnings as I sometimes feel the same way. However, when I feel that way, I keep telling myself I have to give it a chance. From what I've read on the forums, it seems like with some hubbers at least, the earnings start picking  up after the first adsense payout. However, I think for alot of people, it's hard being patient. That's probably why 95% of blogs fail, although I realize HP is not a blog but more like an article-writing site.

    No she's pretty much right.
With all the extra garbage you have to sign up to just to get this hubpages to work for you, it's a huge waste of time.
I imagine however, that if you do nothing but sit at home all day and write 'articles' it'd pay out.
I only spotted this when I was going through stuff trying to close my account lol.

riotgirl got stuck into it, though I didn't realise that she'd been missing for two months.

Looks like she went hard for the first month, publishing a hub every second day, then nothing for two weeks. Posted this thread. Then gone.

I didn't notice when this thread was first posted 6 weeks ago.

My position here on hubpages is apparently different than most others.  I see hubpages as a great opportunity to help me in my own writing skills.  I also enjoy what others have to say and what many hubbers write about.  It is how I grade myself.  I came into this community with little intentions of making money.  Am I wrong in thinking this way?  Am I wasting other hubbers time by being a hubber myself?  Truthfully, I didn't think any money could be made on hubpages.  And if anyone has made money off it, it's because they were here in the beginning.  Is that wrong?

      Thanks.  I absolutely agree.

I imagine trying to make big money on hubpages would be a 24 hr job.  That takes years of dedication.  Fast money only comes to lucky few.  They be better off playing the lottery.
But if someone is interested in making some extra change, I can see how this would be an effective tool.  Just the same- someone who starts a part-time job doesn't get pay the first day.  It usually takes 14 to 30 days.

I have started on hubpages only very recently and have started to notice an increase in my adsense earnings, but even so my total earings so far are less than what I could earn in half an hour!  Never going to be a big enough earner to be a job, but I class it more like a hobby.  Plus it is a great break from working on my dissertation.

    I too agree.

Hubpages is a waste of time and it is a poor performer when compared to other networks.

I am shutting down my hubs and transferring them all to Bukisa where I am actually making money.

Putting quite some effort into Hubpages has returned little reward. Whereas on other sites the reward is more immediate and greater.

Being new here, I hope I'm not intruding by piping in.  I just wanted to say that what struck me while reading the posts in this thread is the fact that some people are looking at HubPages strictly as an income generator (without taking the writing or community into consideration).  That's fine, I imagine, but then isn't it like a business for the authors rather than a creative outlet?  Any business takes work, dedication and time to build up.  I know I certainly don't expect to get rich here and that's okay with me.

Before I signed up, I came to the site often and liked the layouts of the articles and how friendly everyone seems to be.  Also, I get the impression that HubPages prefers a certain standard of writing, which I plan on working on for my own account.  Having only made one hub so far, I have to say that I really like how easy it is.

Anyway, like I said, I hope it's okay for me to jump in here.

I don't agree that HubPages is worse than other networks.  I think it's just lack of patience.

I've had a few people come over from Helium and join, then leave again. They can't be bothered with the rigmarole of signing up for Adsense, eBay and Amazon.  They just want to write, not muck around adding photos and making it look pretty.  And when they've earned nothing after three or four months, they disappear.

It's a pity, because I've found the initial "pain" (if you can really call it that) was more than worth it.  I've earned twice the income with a quarter the number of articles, and the rate of earning just keeps on building.  Sure, it's not a fortune (do I really expect to earn a fortune with 70 articles???) but I reckon it's a good return on investment.

I'm with Marisa - HubPages certainly isn't 'crap'.  Its an excellent platform for learning about SEO and monitorising article writing.  If you think its rubbish then provide comparative statistics with other sites to back up your argument.

Like Marisa, my earnings are steadily increasing and I'm learning lots.  I don't expect to make a fortune from it but HubPages is a real income stream which seems to be holding up well in time of recession.  I love writing and if I can make a little cash from it then I'm really happy.

I know its an old clique but 'Content is King'.  If you're not a writer then don't expect to get rich here...

Yes, it does stink that your hubscore has dropped enough to make your links nofollow! Do oyu maybe reuse the content from your blog on hubs or link to your own domains to frequently?

Other than loss of dofollow link privileges, I dont see any reason to sweat a hubscore

  23. marisuewrites profile image58

I love writing at HubPages, but I am still learning how to make money, if possible.  The scoring is strange.  I can write, get good page views and comments, and my score goes down. I don't understand it.  I don't see that for some other hubbers, so I'm trying not to think it's a consipiracy????   LOL

I'm still learning about keywords and their proper use.  I do wonder about those who say they make hundreds and thousands...hmmm  what could I be doing that "wrong?"

and, why are the links we can add here to our blogs "nofollow??"  that doesn't help much!

I added news capsules and then they all went down....to ALL my hubs.  No one has explained that to me, yet.

Then, I added Amazon, and Amazon now says I don't have an account, but I have an account number with them - so I'm still trying to work that out.

I think just limiting our income to google adsense is not going to be much, unless I'm really doing something wrong in that department!!!  Any advice?

After being here just a few short weeks, I'm amazed at how well hubpages rank in the search engines. So I can't really believe its impossible to make money. Although like everything else on the web, it takes an incredible amount of time and tweaking to get it right!

It's also quite addicting. I came here interested in a very narrow travel niche, but all of a sudden my creative juices are starting to flow, and I've been outlining and research another series of hubs in an entirely different category!

I can tell it's going to take some discipline not to go off in too many directions all at once.

Let's not be openly promoting other sites on Hubpages' forums.  That'd be pretty tacky.

As a side note - Ann, try putting some of your hubs up for critique in the Extreme Hub Makeover section if you haven't already.  Maybe some of the Hubbers around here who have made money and are doing well with Hubpages could give you some tips that way.

As an aside- if you just write Hubs then leave them, obviously they're not going to do as well as you would hope.

I would openly promote all sorts of other hub alternatives, and not consider it tacky if it was a response to a question.

I think this attitude of unspoken rules is tacky. Particularly since there are listed rules, none which would be broken by talking about hub alternatives.

Just off the top of my head

    squidoo
    bukisa
    associated content
    --------------
    constant content
    demand studios
the last two arent really like hubpages, but you do get paid to write

    boy, do i feel tacky

Personally I think hubpages is the best choice as far as search rankings, transparency and impression shares go...but that certainly wouldnt keep me from openly discussing alternatives and or competitors

I do think it is odd that Ann has made so little off her hubs though..I did notice in teh few hubs i looked at, that your google ads werent very relevent and that your amazon ads arent targeted very well - seems like you used very broad keywords (and no eBay?)- but the writing is a very high quality especially in comparison to the norm

eBay performs very well for me here, so that is definitely something you should try to include...esp if you land a couple ACRU's

  32. gamergirl profile image84
    gamergirlposted 15 years ago

sunforged:  No need for attitude, dude.  I look at it the same as going into, say, a Books-a-Million store and walking around carrying a big sign that says Borders is having a 40% off clearance sale.  It IS tacky.

    1. sunforged profile image71
sunforgedposted 15 years agoin reply to this

It matters whose side your on...theoretically walking around books a million promoting a 40% clearance for a competitor may force books a million to compete and offer a similar offer to its visitors. Since my goal would be to get a book for the cheapest possible price - i would care very little about the impression of "tacky" that i may give off

As a consumer or in this case a freelancer having healthy and open competition is a benefit to us, this requires a unimpeded flow of information

I will once again point out that my informed and researched opinion is that hubs is the frontrunner in the write for impression share game but I am always open to suggestions and opportunities and would prefer if hubs had to stay on their toes (although the level of support is amazing, and Im not sure how much more on the toes it could be)

we are sharecroppers here so im
not a fan of the "trustee/hall monitor" syndrome...world wide web, wild wild west..
