After discussing this with my husband, I decided to revise the notes section on my poetry post. We talked about how explanations of poems don't really add anything to the poem, and in fact detract from the reader's experience of the poem. What do you all think? How can we make the word count of the contest with our shorter poems if we do not wish to include an explanation of the poem? You can see what I did here in my revision: http://stina-ann.hubpages.com/hub/Poem- … le-Hipster
Let me know what you think.

Before I go and read your poem, I will write what I try to do.  As you stated explaining a poem takes the experience away from the reader.  I try and show what inspired me to write the poem.  I do an introduction speaking about this.  I then try and relate something to the poem without giving the explanation of the poem itself.

That seems like a good approach. I'll be posting another poem tomorrow, even shorter (!), and I'll give this a shot!

I also write a little about the type of poem it is. IE, if it is a Shakespearean sonnet I will write a little about it and try to give an explanation of what it means to be that type of poem.

Yeah, I really like that idea. The reader learns a little something about poetry along with the experience of the poem itself.

I don't even know if I should have entered, because I don't really consider myself a "serious poet".  Anyway...

I did something similar (I think - haven't looked at his) as SirDent did.  I wrote an introduction.   I didn't refer to the poem at all.  I "led into it" by presenting the "background idea" (kind of "the main part of the poem's message but in "straight, non-poem" words).  The poem is about being strong, so the intro is as if someone said to me, "Say a few words about being strong," and I did.    I spaced the "blurb" far enough away from the actual poem to kind of emphasize that it's a separate thing (and maybe make the page look better).

In view of the fact that I'm not a big fan of explaining the poem or writing a little "story" to go with it, I'm OK enough with the approach I ended up going with.  (Whether anyone else is "OK enough" with it - who knows.  smile  )

I agree with Sir Dent. Writing an explanation takes away from the readers fun of coming up with their own thoughts on the poem. I write what inspired the my poem and try not to give an explanation or interpretation.

Maybe you can put the poem at the top of the hub with a picture, and then write the commentary underneath it.  This way people would have to read your poem first, draw their own conclusions, and then you could explain part of why you wanted to write it.  If you want to be a bit more cryptic, you could just ask questions, like what does this poem mean to you? or what kind of impressions or feelings do you have reading this poem.

          1. Phyllis Doyle profile image83
Phyllis Doyleposted 13 years agoin reply to this

That is a good idea SweetiePie. Putting the explanation at the bottom gives the poem a chance to stand alone and give its own impression.

            1. SweetiePie profile image73
SweetiePieposted 13 years agoin reply to this

I would put several pictures directly below the poem, followed by the explanation.  This will force people to read the poem as a stand-alone, admire the pictures, and this scroll down to read the explanation.  I think keeping the explanation as more of a question session, kind of like with a book club, you can keep the interpretation open as well.  Just some thoughts smile.

I like the idea of using the explanation at the bottom to promote discussions like a book club. Where are you coming up with these idea? They are great!

For those of you Poets wondering and some have asked the question? Will the poet judges be reading every poem? My answer is NO it's impossible to read and comment on every poem entered in the contest:-) We will be sent on 3 separate installments throughout November, poetry filtered, screened and accepted by the Hub Team.

We as judges will read, review and pick the top 5 candidates and send our choices back to our moderator. Thus the contest winner will be chosen. Good luck with all the entries, there are so many great poems coming in and I am proud and honored to be chosen as one of the poetry judges to help select those candidates.

yes, it is impossible to read all of the entries - so I have been reading a number of poems when I catch them on the feed, or some posted in this thread. I haven't left many comments, but I've rated up many hubs after reading. I'm so excited to have the arts as a focus for this contest.

The judges will submit the top 5 choices from the final list of candidates after the contest ends. The top ranked choices across all the judges will be the first, second and third choice winners. SO, every entry is important if you want to make it to that final list!  Since there are so many quality entries, the competition is apparent!

My suggestion, write for the joy of writing and make it the very best you can. Have a great title and format and let the hub flow. It will be a quality hub you can be proud of as part of your HubPages portfolio!

I'm a poet and a fiction writer. Yet somehow, I found myself writing a ... a what? A short essay? I don't know what this is, except that it's creative writing:

The Miracle of a Milk Carton

Even when I write prose, I can hear traces of classical meter, caesuras and alliteration rattling around under the hood. Most parents of children my generation were afraid their kids would go deaf listening to loud rock music with headphones; I went tone-deaf listening to Sappho and Cicero.

I just found this thread and am having so much fun reading through it. I am going to read as many poems as I can, hopefully all of them! Thank you, Simone, for starting this for us.

Here are my entries so far:

11/1 In A Moment Of Sanity
    http://phyllisdoyle.hubpages.com/hub/In … -Of-Sanity

This is a poem about an elderly woman who once loved and was loved. She is now alone with her memories only, for he is gone now -- yet he is still near.

    11/2 Visions of Profound Love
    http://phyllisdoyle.hubpages.com/hub/Vi … found-Love

Some believe in twin souls, many do not. Let us imagine that one woman does and the man she loves also believes. Their love is so profound that there is no barrier to stop their spiritual love, nothing on Earth that can break that bond.

11/3 And There He Would Live and Die
    http://phyllisdoyle.hubpages.com/hub/An … ve-and-Die

This is a poem about a man who lost his love, all he owned, and now wanders on the streets, homeless and alone.

11/4 Let Not the Night Come So Soon
    http://phyllisdoyle.hubpages.com/hub/Le … me-So-Soon

Most of my poetry is inspired by the deep love for my twin soul. He is my greatest love, my spiritual love,

    11/5 Ode To Nature's Child
    http://phyllisdoyle.hubpages.com/hub/Od … ures-Child

This poem was inspired by Jordan, the lizard I found one day on my patio. I had intended to focus more on the love the woman had for her husband and the torment she went through when he had gone missing -- yet, it seems, Jordan demanded more attention. I felt Jordan deserved an ode for all the trouble he had gone to when inspiring my poem.

Also, a bit of encouragement I want to add here it is not about winning the contest, it is about being creative and artistic for yourself.  I do not even post my links here because I have come to believe so deeply in myself as an artist, so even though my comments dropped way off as of late, I am encouraged that my page views have gone up higher than these have been in months.  Also, I am selling artwork on my own websites, so a lot of what you do creatively as an artist, writer, or poet needs to be derived from your own satisfaction.  Art is a very subjective thing.

Agreed Sweetie Pie. Although it would be great to win this contest, my focus is on my creativity as an artist, photographer and writer right now. I have had an amazing "re-birth" during this contest because it is getting me to release that "artist" in me!

I appreciate this contest as an opportunity to learn and grow with my poetry writing. Just to have the satisfaction of knowing  I am learning and am pleased with my poetry is rewarding to me. As SweetiePie says:" I have come to believe so deeply in myself as an artist, " which is the best thing an artist can say about their work and self.

        That's what we're looking for!

I've seen a number of posts regarding the 'explanation' of the poem. This certainly doesn't mean to explain the poems meaning, as it may mean something different to each reader. You can add a bit of background, what inspired you, reflection on the topic of the poem.. be just as creative with this part of the hub as you are with the actual poem. Different formats may grab our attention.
There is no right or wrong way to format your hub. You could even add a video if it's relevant, and if you do, make sure it can be used freely.  I've seen some hubs with a video to play (optional) as one reads the poem.
I've also noticed new members writing their first hubs for the contest. Very impressive. Welcome to HP!

Another reminder to make sure you add the tag: contest. big_smile

This is pretty standard in the poetry world. If the poem has been previously published anywhere, it's often not eligible for contests or submissions to poetry magazines, etc.
Thanks for sharing as it's a good reminder for everyone. Hopefully you will write a new poem for the contest. smile

My entry is a poem called "What I Know Eby Way." It is about the awe, mystery, hardships, and blessings of life. Peace and Light...Gary.

Hi Hubbers. I've just joined hub pages and have just published my first hub page.

I would really appreciate all your comments.

The hub page is a photo collage of an Indian Wedding in Mauritius.

    I hope you enjoy.

Enjoying the challenge of the Poetry and Creative Writing Competition, and also reading some excellent entries, the standard is very good.

Here are my first three poems - on various subjects - as usual trying to mix in a little humour with a dash of real life.
