Where does someone like me, with psychic ability, fit into Christianity? Do you think I am evil?

I believe in God & Jesus & God's Holy Spirit. But I was born psychic. I see dead people and I talk to dead people. It is a God-given ability. I help people. Yet I cannot label myself as "Christian". I read Tarot Cards, but don't really need them to know some people's future. I just know. Please let me know what you think. Thank you.

    Dr. Marie,

Have you considered that God gifted some people as Prophets to allow them to see the future?

If you believe God and that Jesus is His son and our way to Heaven, then why can't you label yourself a Christian?

God gives each of us spiritual gifts, including mercy, administration, service, etc.  Yours might be discernment -- "just knowing" things.

This is a good way to put it, God (as I mentioned in my answer) gives us the gift to prophet, he and only he knows the future and can or cannot change it. He actually can do whatever he wishes. I also know things but what I know comes from powers up.

I would have to to ask if you pray.  If you pray and have asked God to help you know if this is a blessing or a curse and if you are helping someone then your decision could be based upon that.  As long as you are not praying to the devil.....I am sure it may be untrue, but I have heard that some gifted people are in contact with satan????  I would not want to tell you that this could be right because satan is evil.

All you really need to do is seek God and He can give you peace and let you know you are doing His will.  Prayer is the key, I believe for all of our answers.  God Bless

There are some really good answers here and some helpful suggestions. I do not think you are evil. I too, beleive that it is a gift. As long as you are using your gift for good, I see no harm in it. I am a strong believer that there is no way God created this world as simple as we see it. I think there is more out there. I think certain people are given certain abilities and people become scared of the unknown and that is where you question yourself. Embrace your ability and do some good with it.

I don't believe we should lable ourselves as any form of religion (catholics, buddist, jahova's, christians..) but more so join together and give thanks to god for allowing us a chance to experience this great joruney of ours. our life is full of mysteries and god has put us all here to love and learn about life and human connection. that's how I like to view it. take care.

I think you are worrying to much to be honest.
For many years, I did research into the paranormal. I should add too that I am legally classified as a 'spiritualist' in terms of religious identification and trained for 3 years as a medium. I was born into a religious family, attended religious schools and did youth work in both churches and synagogues. These days, i am entirely secular in my outlook.
So you were 'born' psychic eh? Well, congratulations - that makes you just like oh, the rest of the entire world's population!
One of the things that came across so strongly in my research was that psychic experiences occur to EVERYONE, regardless of their beliefs and even in spite of their lack of them.
My uncle was a classic case in point. An avowed atheist from the age of 15 (he died in his 80's), yet a man who had tremendous numbers of such experiences. He could see or hear all manner of things - and yet that did nothing to change his views.  He just accepted what he saw and left it at that.
The point here is this: Forget what the 'christians' or any other 'religious' group thinks of you - because in fact, being -psychic is a perfectly natural human thing that has nothing to do with religion.
Lets draw an analogy. We can ALL sing and we can ALL run. However, we are not all Susan Boyle or Usain Bolt. They are the exceptions to the rule. And so it is with yourself. Your psychic sense is just that bit more refined than other peoples. So learn to control it (because I have seen people with uncontrolled psychic abilities go mad) and if you can use it to do a bit of good (and maybe earn a living from it too), then why not. After all, thats what singers and athletes do with their talents.
What you must NOT do is imagine that its some kind of 'god' given 'gift'. Its nothing of the kind. Its just an ability you have, thats all.

This is an easy answer.  Whoever wins the war installs their belief system and all others are subject to them.  In short Christianity demonizes anything that does not agree with it. All people are psychic; your ability is as natural as "natural." People have been dreaming dreams and projecting astrally long before the Doomsaying, villifiers called Christians ever existed.  No you're just human. Old fashioned, psychic and spiritual human.  Just like the rest of us. smile

No, you're not evil.  You just likely have a very sensitive temporal lobe.

Neurotheology is a fairly new science, but the discoveries made thusfar suggest that the sensing of a "presence" can be induced in laboratory conditions, and that many prophets of the past showed signs of either a damaged or sensitive temporal lobe.  I think it's a little more than coincidence that those with more outrageous and contradictory beliefs showed more signs of damage than sensitivity.

What you may want to do is try to get rid of things in your house that produce too much electromagnetism when they're not turned on.  Switch your plug-in clocks with battery powered or wind-up clocks.  Unplug things like your stove, microwave, and other appliances that are non essential, when you're not using them.

That will clear away any possible physical-realm based interruptions that may cloud your perception.  What you want is a kind of clear line.  If you can, make a kind of shelter room that blocks external electromagnetic fields as best as possible, so that you can think clearly and sort out actual messages from physical triggers that the mind assigns meaning to the same way we try to find patterns in random spots and such.

I believe in God, but not the Santa Claus primitive version that most religious people, bless their hearts, misguidedly follow.  So I believe that whatever is going on with you is likely very natural, and has a scientific albeit possibly metaphysical (because we don't know everything and can't observe everything) cause.

Abilities are neither good nor evil.  It's what you do with them that makes the difference.

Within each of us is Spirit. The Physical body is just the vehicle our Spirit lives in on this earth . Our flesh has sensations feeling, symptoms and we reason, think and exist in the physical matter called earth.
The spirit that is within us is the breath of life that God had breathed into us, just like when Adam was created, then as God created Eve out of Adams body (Rib). So we are physical by earthly nature, but Spiritual by God's Will.
The ability that you believe you have that causes you to see into someone's future is a Spiritual gift. God gives us all spiritual abilities, and some of us are more aware than others.  Even in the beginning of time, there were the earliest scientists, such as the Egyptians and the Mayans that could foresee the destinies of the world.
I don't know who thought to call those who have this spiritual gift of Prophecy "psychics". It is a term very misused.
The proper use of this gift of prophecy is by whom you give credit to. To give God thanks for spiritual gifts is to put God higher than self. If you give yourself credit for the spiritual gift and not acknowledge Him, then you turn the special ability into a "craft". Being labeled "Christian" is a misused term too. To Accept Jesus into your life and dedication of everything  in your life to Him, and to know he has forgiven you, and to learn His Word from the Bible and to put His Word into Action makes you a Christian.
My best recommendation to you is to Thank God everyday for your special Spiritual Gifts and acknowledge Jesus Name in everything you do. Then He will give You Wisdom as you ask for it. Then you will never need tarot cards again!
Oh, my thought about speaking to dead people- well, Satan has a lot of tricks up His sleeve, making us think that our dead loved ones are listening to us. The Bible states that those who are passed away are asleep until the final Judgement Day.1 Corinthians 15:52 states that the dead shall not rise until the last trump is sounded, which means that those who are dead are really asleep until Jesus comes again.

If you have this gift of telling the future you should pray and read your Bible. Ask God to guide you to help develop your faith and stop predicting the future with Tarot Cards. If you need more guidance I suggest you consult a priest or a pastor.

It seems to me that you're confident in what you believe. Seems to me that if you were evil, you wouldn't care enough to ask. The only problem I see is that you seem to be searching for a "label" . I don't follow any "religion" but I do consider myself spiritual. I believe in goodness, honesty, truth. You didn't give much detail on how you help people, but as long as you feel that you do...how can that be wrong?

The main reason I choose not to follow the religions that I am familiar with is because a lot of churches or preachers or whatever, use fear to try and make us believe. It's like the show "Scared Straight". I'm not going to walk into a church every week and label myself as being a follower of religion simply because I've been scared into it or because it's what everyone else does.

I believe what I believe and I'm okay with that. I think it's confusing, but I also think it's supposed to be that way. We should question what we truly believe. I don't think that telling people that they are going to burn in hell because they do this or that is a little ridiculous...how would they know?

With all due respect for all who commented, I don't think anybody within themselves are the authority on this subject. Heck, I myself am not an authority in this subject! Opinions are like noses. We all have them! So what source do you go to? The Bible! There's a reason God put an authoritative source out there. That's so people won't be getting confused with all the different opinions of the masses.

Now, in your question you said that if it fit's into Christianity. We must understand that in order for one to be a Christian, we must believe in the Bible. That it's 100% inspired by God and it has no errors. That's what Christians believe.

You may see many comments of people claiming themselves to be Christians, but they'll give you answers which are not based on what the Bible truly teach in regard to consulting the dead. Maybe they don't know better, but it is what it is!

Hey, here I give you what the Bible says in regard to this. These are only some scriptures:

"Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God."

    - Leviticus 19:31

"Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God."

    - Deuteronomy 18:10-13

For the living know that they shall die:  but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished;  neither have they any more a portion for ever in any [thing] that is done under the sun.

    - Ecclesiastes 9:5-6

"When they say to you, "Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,"  should not a people consult their God? {Should they} {consult} the dead on behalf of the living?"

    - Isaiah 8:19

"And  no marvel; for  Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light."

    - 2 Corinthians 11:13-14

"And as it is appointed unto men  once to die, but after this the judgment"

    - Hebrews 9:27

Ok? Hey, good question by the way. I hope you consider what Scriptures say in regard to this. And remember, everybody has an opinion. But we must check if they fit in with the Source.

Sensitive question to ask, but from personal experience, it is one that *must*  be asked.

Christianity is relatively new in the history of mankind and is not the only path to follow. There is no ONE path for everyone.  We must each find our own true path to walk - and every great leader (Jesus included) taught this.  Remember that the bible was written by people with a very specific view who wanted others to fit into a very specific mould.  I have some very strong opinions on this topic, but it's important that you discover your Truth for yourself.  A little bit of research can be extremely revealing and may help you feel better about .... well, just about every aspect of your spiritual life.

Plainly, you don't fit in Christianity and that's a good thing. Labels are things people need, but God/Creator/Great Spirit does not need them to know You.  Sometimes, we get lost in labelling and trying to fit into something others can recognize and be comfortable with.  When you are at peace with your Self and your relationship with your Creator, these things fall away.

What you need to focus on is your personal spiritual life.  Are you walking true and living in a honest way?  Is the path you're on right for you?  Is your relationship with your Creator right with you?  These are the only things that matter.  Know your Self and live in a righteous manner that is true to you.  This is how you glorify and bring honour your maker.  Respect the bountiful blessings given to you and use them to bring Light wherever you stand, Little Sister.

Please do not write that Jesus says something when you have no clue what He said. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except by Me" (John 14:6). Jesus is the only way to God; there is no one else.

If this is who you are, no one can tell you to look to someone to ask for something that you've already been given.  Whether or not someone else believes in who you say you are is irrelevant. Don't second guess yourself and ask strangers who have no idea about you about you!  If this is truly you, focus on being you...........

If you love me you will keep my sayings... John 14:23
I am married- I can do lots of things that do not bless my wife-
so I do not do them.  It's all about love.

You may think the only way you can help people is by these
methods, methods other than the ones Jesus used, but that is where
God- through Jesus and The Holy Spirit can teach you His Ways of
prophesy, healing and gifts of the Holy Spirit (1Cor. 12).

There are plenty of "psychics" that have bowed their knee
to Jesus as The Way, The Truth and The Life,  and minister
powerful life changing miracles under the ways of the New Testament
instead of ways that the Bible warns us to flee...

He is Risen from the dead-
Talk to him- not the dead.

"Let the dead bury the dead, come and follow me" Jesus  Matt 8:22

I have been in a similar predicament. I was raised Christian, came to Christ when I was very young, and was taught to suppress my God-given psychic abilities. To not "give in" to them. I don't see dead people, myself, but I have other gifts, some of which include being able to read tarot.

So. After much soul-searching, lots of inner conflict and existential questions, here's what I came up with.

If it makes you more like Christ, like He wants us to be, and if it makes you love Him more than ever before, and makes you understand His will in your life, then there is no Biblical basis to say psychic abilities are wrong.

My argument is this: in the New Testament there were people who were healers at the same time as Jesus and His disciples were going around doing the same thing. His disciples came to Him, outraged. And how did the ever-loving Jesus respond? Jesus, to my knowledge of the story, said to let them be. Were they harming anyone? No.

When you start thinking you're a god (and yes, this applies to neurosurgeons with a god-complex, too), then that's a problem. When you become less loving, more selfish and self-centered and all those awful things Jesus stood against, then there's a problem. Helping people? Using something God Himself gave you, like your brown eyes, for something positive? Not an issue.

And, you might want to look into Cristopaganism. It may just strike the right balance for you. But even if it doesn't the river of Christian beliefs is deep and wide enough to allow a few...differing interpretations to swim inside its currents.

According to the Bible, the spirit either goes into the presence of Christ in heaven (Philippians 1:21-23 and 2 Corinthians 5:8) or the spirit goes into a place of torment to await sentencing (Luke 16:23-24). There is no returning to this physical world to communicate or interact with people.

In the Bible there is only one recorded incident of a dead person interacting with people – King Saul with the deceased prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 28:6-19).

I'm not here to judge you or condemn you but you should definitely be praying to God about your "psychic" ability because God doesn't give people the ability to talk to dead people.

When people are blessed with this gift it is to help other people looking for answers without charging people who can't afford to pay a fee. Then when i touched it, it fell off that same second. I witness many and many times where i can here the clock ticking from far distance. Just today i smelled the watermelon from my room, i thought it was something wrong with my nose and i come to the living room and my mom actually bought one. Left me shocked. One time i told god to make liguor bottle fall, after 10 seconds it fell off the table.. There's thousands other things i saw and witnessed. Just rent the movie called Push, i strongly disbelieve gifted people go to hell. Christians just get scared of us and believe were some devils.. As a child i had abilities but never focused on it. A lot of times I knew what a person was feeling without them telling me as I got older I had a pastor who told me I was evil and that I was not following Gods way. I am now much older and do not have any of the gifts I had when I was younger but I know I was not evil and that I was given a gift from God. I don't believe that tarot cards are of God, if God was the one to give you this gift then I would not be ashamed to use it but I most likely would get rid of the cards. But this is what I would do and you can only know what is best for you and it is not my place or any other persons place to judge you.

To answer this; we know that witches are made out of wood and therefore float in water. Do you float in water?
To determine if you float we ask what else floats, there are many answers but the key answer is a duck.
So the next question is; do you weigh the same as a duck?
If the answer is yes I'm sorry to say that you are a witch and should be burned.

    Dr. Marie,

The Greater Boston Church of Spiritualism... read on.

I've had countless experiences that began happening in my early twenties. I was afraid to share these experiences with anyone thinking people would surely think I was crazy. Today, they bring me great comfort.

One night while on vacation with my mother I remembered a dream I had the night before. She was not one to believe in messages from the dead or sprits communicating with the living. I had dreamed of my father telling me to go into a secondhand bookstore we were standing outside of. I remembered seeing him instructing me to go over to one of the book shelves and take a white with black print inch bound paper back off the shelf. I did just as I remembered in the dream. As I took the book off the shelf I instinctively opened to the first page. On the inside cover to my mother's witness was written the name, Eileen Sullivan. My mother said, "That's Eileen's writing." Eileen was my father's sister. In that second with my mother was confirmed that the book I held in my hand was my father's book. It was a book that my father wanted me to read.

My experiences along with my relationship with Jesus Christ have brought me to the Spiritualist Church.

    Spiritualist Declaration of Principles

In Spiritualism we have no dogma or creed, but we do have a set of 9 principles that we try to use in our daily lives. These are:

    1. We believe in Infinite Spirit and that God is Infinite Spirit.

    2. We believe that the phenomena of nature, both physical and spiritual, is the expression of Infinite Spirit.

    3. We affirm that a correct understanding of such expression, and living in accordance therewith, constitutes
    true religion.

    4. We affirm that the existence and personal identity of an individual continue after the change called death.

    5. We affirm that communication with the so-called dead is a fact, scientifically proven by the phenomena of
    Spiritualism.

    6. We believe that the highest morality is contained in the Golden Rule: “Whatsoever ye would that others
should do unto you, do ye also unto them.”

    7. We affirm the moral responsibility of the individual and that they make their own happiness or unhappiness
as they obey or disobey Nature's physical and spiritual laws.

    8. We affirm that the doorway to reformation is never closed to any human soul here or hereafter.

    9. We affirm the precepts of prophecy and healing contained in the Bible are divine attributes proven through
    Mediumship.

Your gift is not the issue, but your theology is, and that's an intellectual thing. Words are just words, but if you really follow the Word, the words you use are important. Never do something that causes another to stumble in the faith. I claim the gift of 'prophecy' as well as the skill to counsel and be sensitive others pain. Instead of tarot cards, maybe use a cross to meditate upon. also, knowing and telling someone's future (or possible future, as is one aspect of prophecy) is not always an advisable thing to do (in a direct manner). If you have the gift, use it with great discretion, care, and little or no fanfare. Be a servant, not high profile 'medium'.

    1. glynch1 profile image67
glynch1posted 8 years agoin reply to this

People who use Tarot cards do not possess a gift from God. And telling her to "use a cross to meditate upon" is also a useless piece of counsel. The spiritual gift of prophecy (predicting the future) ended with the close of the canon.

I can tell you as a Catholic that not all Catholics believe in all of the "rules" associated with the Church. Some people ask...why affiliate yourself with the church if that is the case.  I would ask why would you marry your wife if you didn't agree with everything she said.

In general as a Catholic, I find the topic very interesting.  I once visited a medium and was thoroughly convinced he must have been real. Or at least 99% sure.  And he was a devout Catholic...When I asked him about his faith, he said..."The Catholic Church teaches you how to ask for things...But they don't teach you how to listen"   He claimed we all have this ability and just need to learn to harness it.

However, I think most people who claim such abilities are frauds.  But I don't rule it out.  In fact I find it very interesting, yet at the same time scary.  You never know what door you may open I guess, would be the underlying fear.  I will say that claims of predicting the future make me more skeptical of someone, because I believe we can all influence and direct our own fate, which is in constant motion based on our decisions.

But in short, I don't think that if you're genuine, that you're evil.  One might suggest Jesus was a medium with God.  That did not make him evil to his followers. The question is whether or not you're real.  The one reason I remain somewhat skeptical, even though I have seen some first hand evidence myself...is the James Randi Challenge.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Millio … _Challenge

To date nobody has claimed this for years.  It has been around since 1964 and nobody has won it yet.  If the issue is using your ability for money...than why not donate the money to a worthy cause like St. Judes or something ??? It makes no sense to me. Perhaps I am missing something.

What the Roman Catholic church doesnt teach you is the Word.of God. The vast majority of catholics are biblically and theologically ignorant...and yes I do include the Pope in that.

According to the Old Testament, any person practicing sorcery or contacting the dead is strictly prohibited. The idea is that those things are not from the God of the Old and New Testament. When people die, they either go to heaven or hell, there is no option of becoming a ghost according to the Scriptures. Strictly speaking, prophesying the future was no longer one of the spiritual gifts given to Christians after the early church age. Given what the Old and New Testament says regarding psychics etc,, anyone practicing these "unholy" practices would be sinning. Since there is no specific case of someone being a Christian and also being a psychic in the New Testament, I can only surmise that you can indeed be a Christian, but one who is practicing something forbidden by the God you said you love.

Most of what you have written is correct, but the gifts of the Holy Spirit are still the same as they were in the Old Covenant.  The Covenant hasn't changed, just who was privy to it changed.

There are still prophets today who predict the future and it comes to pass. This is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Bobby Conner is just one of many.

All I have to say is if they passed away (spiritual gifts/offices) then what skills are given to the two witnesses at the end of the sin age? Yes they're people because they prophecy, die and are resurrected and have some of God's power: plagues etc.

Have you read the life of Edgar Cayce? He too was a Christian who had special abilities to perceive things others could not. You might find inspiration from his story. The book is called, 'There is a River' and another famous book about his work is called. 'Many Mansions'.

Edgar Cayce was not a Christian... he was possessed by a familiar spirit, as are ALL mediums, spiritualists, clairvoyants, etc.

You are not evil you just have a gift of seeing into the spiritual world but you are using it the wrong way.  Having a gift to see and know things is not considered evil; but using it wrongfully is another discussion.  Anything you do must line up with the word of God anything against the word of God is sin. Jesus loves you; blessings

No you are not evil at all you  are gifted! Have you connected with God with equal agility and ease as you connect with the dead to find your mission on Earth?  How are you elevating on the platform of the Universe with this ability?

Every man has a spiritual part and having psychic ability is just one of the various spiritual gifts of man. This is a special gift is not evil and there are committed Christian folks with special foretelling and psychic abilities. Your ability is God-given, you are blessed.

Foretelling the future ceased with the completion of the canon of Scripture. No true Christian possesses a gift that God has forbidden. Read the Old Testament.

You are talking to souls. If they died recently, then they may be in a particular state or form for God's own reasons. Perhaps you are seeing their causal body. Lorna Byrne from Ireland sees angels. She was born that way. She has written three books and you will find them on the internet. I believe that she may be able to help.

We do not encourage this in the spiritual life. It is infinitely better to pray to God for the fulfilment of His Will, and ask Him what He requires you to do.
Unless ordained, so to speak, from above, this will not help you and may delay your spiritual progress. On the journey to the Godhead, it is better to look straight ahead and nowhere else. These things you describe are simply beautiful flowers you meet along the way and they will hold you back.

Finally, our scriptures are full of mysticism. Still, you need not follow this. Follow your own star. Seek a guide.

Joking, yes? We are our own guides; teach, or preach, dependency on nothing, especially false prophets; as Kansas said:: if I claim to be a wise man, that surely means that I don't know." LOOK WHERE YOU CHOOSE; IT'S DIVINE.

When you recognize a gift you must recognize the gift giver.  No one can tell you you do not see or hear dead people or a world of spirits (good and bad); however, though you are spirit yourself you are also matter and must live amongst those who still live with you.  You MUST establish communication with the Gift-giver to have order in your life.  Pray.
In the same way that all the people in this thread have given you an opinion also dead people can tell you their opinion.  Why would you want more opinions? ONLY He Who made you knows all.  You can rest in Him.
In the end, we all - dead and alive - want to live eternally in God's ordered house.  So, you need to know the house (Heaven) rules.  That's what earth is about: learning how to do God's will even if It goes against yours.
I have found peace doing God's will the way the Our Father describes Heaven - Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven -
Besides, what good will psychics be in Heaven where everyone lives out of time?  Your gift may lie deeper than divination of someone's future.  You are worth much more to God than to predict the future for others.  Fight for Him.
As far as being a Christian... If you believe in Jesus, you must believe in His words.  Talk to Him, read His words and trust in Him.  The Christian "label" and all the joy, persecutions, relations that come from it will follow.  Up for the challenge?
    God bless you always.

Whatever labels we place on ourselves or our beliefs are only as true as our behaviour and whats in our hearts.
Psychic ability is natural and shouldn't affect your right to believe in God.
What others think doesn't really matter and as long as you always treat everyone with love, decency and respect;  then you shouldn't question your morality.
How we act to others is what defines who we are and the presence or non presence of psychic abilities has no bearing on how well we individually treat our fellow humans.

I'm so glad that you asked this question. I want you to go back to the story of Babel, the prophets, the transformation and finally the anointing of the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts. Even the Majii that attended the birth of Christ had some sort of divine knowledge perhaps a direct link to the Almighty. However the conflict often comes due to the fact that Many cultures and religions have given different names to what they call them. Native Americans had shaman and medicine men, as an example. How ever it was rejected when they formed organized religions as part of their political movements. These special people taught folks how to open their spiritual eyes to see truth and to grow spiritually so they could ascend to enlightenment. However if y are trying to manipulate and control A populous....you need to use ignorance and fear to veil their inner eye. Look in your bible. In Proverbs lady wisdom is screaming from the roof top to awake o ye sleepers. Psychic abilities are the gifts of the spirit. And when used properly and with only love and great faith. Jeremia 33:3 read it and know that when u do seek and when u ask you will be shown, and it is beautiful. z
